A virtual Outdoor Retailer trade show tour

I wasn't invited to the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2009 trade show that concluded a four-day run in Salt Lake City over the weekend. Too bad; I love looking at new gear. But I did manage to get a taste of some of the new outdoor products in the pipeline through the show's daily digest.

Here are a few intriguing items that will be making their way to retail shops over the coming year.

Avalanche airbag, made by Backcountry Access. This product consists of a 6-pound pack containing a small cylinder of compressed air. When a ripcord is pulled, the airbag fills to become a flotation device that would buoy the avalanche victim on the surface of the cascading snow to prevent a deep burial.

The airbag has been around for 20 years in Europe where it has a 98 percent success rate, according to Bruce Edgerly, vice president of marketing and sales for BCA. He noted that BCA came up with its own design after deciding that the hassle and expense of importing a European brand were too much.

Floating to the surface sounds better to me than the Avalung option of being buried with a supply of air. But at $499 retail for the BCA airbag, I'll probably stick to the option of skiing inbounds on dangerous snowpack days.

Tubbs' Flex line of showshoes made of a flexible plastic. These are designed to appeal to casual snowshoers who often find themselves on groomed trails or crust. A good idea, because how often do you get to romp in the bottomless powder that traditional snowshoes are made for?

According to Tubbs, the Flex series is designed around a plastic deck that is more flexible than traditional decks, which typically are built around rigid aluminum frames. The plastic in the Flex deck bends both in the front and back and side to side, which means the shoe lands softly and quietly with each step.

K2's new Adventure Series skis. K2 is tossing out its telemark- and AT-specific skis in favor of an all-encompassing backcountry line. Erin Forest, who handles marketing for K2 Telemark, said the company "found that people weren't necessarily looking for a telemark ski or an AT ski. It was more about where they were skiing. A lot of telemark skiers were more going for an alpine ski. They wanted a super burly ski and they just found that a telemark ski-- just because it said K2 telemark on it--wasn't necessarily what they wanted."

I'm one of those skiers who has mounted telemark bindings on a pair of alpine skis - great for tooling around on resort hardpark. For the backcountry, my guess is I'd like the new K2 skis better.

Ecco's BIOM line of running shoes. Ecco, known as a "brown shoe" maker, says its launch of a running shoe comes after three years of development based on the biomechanical motion of the foot for more natural muscle engagement.

That bit about natural muscle engagement will get me to take a look, especially at the promised trail model. But at a suggested retail of $195, the Eccos would have to work really well if I'm going to trade up from my $90-$100 Brooks or Salomons.

Thanks for your article. I would also love to say this that the first thing you will need to conduct is find out if you really need credit improvement. To do that you will need to get your hands on a duplicate of your credit score. That should really not be difficult, since the government makes it necessary that you are allowed to have one free of charge copy of your actual credit report yearly. You just have to check with the right people. You can either check out the website with the Federal Trade Commission or even contact one of the major credit agencies right away.

I can not believe this family. The are so consummed with getting Casey "off", that the needless lost life of that innocent child sits in a box. I have listened with total discust of the lies upon lies and the waste of time law inforcement has spent on her lies. Whether the child was murdered accidently or intentionally.....try and show some emotion. There is no doubt in my mind that her mother killed her because she was in the way. Anyone would have taken that child, put her up for adoption, give her a chance at a life. She is sitting in prison like a queen with cute little "smiles" to Biaz....come on, let stop wasting time and get some justice going here!!!!!!!

Stackable boxes really are a must when moving house, irrespective of self-drive van hire or removal company lorry. Sturdy green, recyclable boxes that may be reused repeatedly are the most useful choice for frequent house moves and for long-term storage - regardless of where the home move takes place. There's nothing more frustrating than having to reload many times, because the awkward manner in which things are packed prevent a fully loaded van making one tour and something tour only.
