Stop the madness
One would think it would go without saying, but last week the National Association of Basketball Coaches felt the need to go on record. The NABC officially opposed college programs accepting commitments from high school players who have not completed their sophomore season.
What prompted the NABC to issue a statement that any rational person would consider just plain, common sense?
Well, Michael Avery, a 15-year-old eighth-grader, announced last month that he would attend Kentucky. Seems the early, early, early commitment has become all the rage. Sports Illustrated reported that Southern California men's basketball coach Tim Floyd has offered two eighth-graders scholarships since 2006. Both were 14 at the time.
"If the current rules state coaches cannot offer scholarships or accept commitments from students earlier than June 15 following the conclusion of the sophomore year, it certainly makes sense that this should apply to anyone in lower grades," NABC president and University of Minnesota coach Tubby Smith said in a written statement released by the association.
Are we missing something here? College basketball coaches recruiting and offering scholarships to eighth-graders? Stop the madness, please. We're guessing, though, we haven't heard the last of this one. What's your take?
This just in: Sticking with the recruiting theme, Ralston Valley's All-Colorado boys basketball player Pierce Hornung has committed to play at Colorado State. The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 18.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.3 steals for the Mustangs last season. Hornung selected CSU over Weber State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Denver and Air Force, according to David Matthews, president of the Colorado Chaos Basketball Club.
Recruit this: These types of items usually receive the Delete button, but we thought we'd pass this one along since it is a free service. (Of course, there is a fee - $39.99 one time charge - for upgrading the athlete's profile). High school athletes can create a profile at beRecruited.com. This networking site allows athletes to update profiles with recent statistics, videos and photos, with the intent that college coaches can view the profiles and connect with the athletes. . . If that is of interest, also check out Jumpforward.com.
In case you missed it: Conifer sprinter Emily Blok was selected the Colorado girls track athlete of the year by Gatorade. Buena Vista shot put and discus champion Mason Finley earned the boys award. Also, Emma Coburn, a recent graduate of Crested Butte, finished second in the 2-kilometer steeple at the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
Nationally speaking: The Rocky Mountain baseball team, which won its second consecutive Class 5A title this past season, finished ranked No. 37 in the country by Rivals.com . . . The state champion Kent Denver boys lacrosse team was ranked 13th nationally by LaxPower.com.

Greetings,
Thank you for highlighting some of the great recruiting services that are emerging for high school athletes (http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/preps/2008/07/stop_the_madness.html). We have one that we think is pretty great as well and would love it if you'd add it to your blog.
CaptainU is a website started by former college coaches that walks high school athletes through the college recruiting process. CaptainU creates a personal recruiting strategy for each athlete who signs up and then provides the athlete with step-by-step instructions on how to find the right colleges, build relationships with college coaches, make a team roster, and land a scholarship. The emphasis is on teaching athletes how to effectively market themselves to college coaches, which makes recruiting an empowering and, dare I say, fun experience.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
All the best,

One more thing...given the very apt title on your article "Stop the Madness," I thought you might be interested in a perspective written by one of our former college coaches: http://www.captainu.com/buzz/49

I believe Open Website Explorer is great (and I just have the cost-free version - am trying to make some income to be able to afford the upgrade). It constantly shows links that Yahoo internet site explorer doesn't, which is quite beneficial (Yahoo after all is just not Google but we are all unhealthily dependent on their application).I desire you the ideal of luck. I do imagine your long term is in giving top quality tools that other people do not have.

People who don't know me have opinions about me. That's the part that's very hurtful. Because how do you form an opinion about somebody if you've never met them or spent any time with them? So it's all based upon hearsay or things that they've read.
