TJ to hang banner for Martin
Thomas Jefferson graduate Derrick Martin, one of the city's top multi-sport athletes this decade, will be honored tonight before the Spartans' boys basketball game against Denver East. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
TJ will hang a banner in honor of Martin, a 2003 graduate, who went on to a stellar football career at the University of Wyoming and currently is a member of the Baltimore Ravens. While at TJ, Martin excelled in football, basketball and track and also carried a 4-0 grade-point average his senior year.
Said TJ athletic director Lani Nobles: "I remember Derrick pointing to the banner of Daniel Graham hanging in our gym, and telling me to save the spot next to it for him. At the time I laughed out loud and said sure Derrick I will save that spot for you. He grinned his huge Derrick Martin smile and said, 'I mean it Ms. Nobles, that spot will be mine.'
"I have to say a lot of kids dream big, but I believed Derrick. Now we can hang him a banner in his honor. He has already done some nice things for the students and community of Thomas Jefferson High School and we appreciate greatly his support!"
