Waiver mistake

There was a series of reports that Brian Fuentes is on waivers. Not so quick.

When Fuentes was placed on the bereavement list on Tuesday it negated any effort to put him through waivers. And while the reports got excited about trade possiblities what the move to be him on the bereavement list underscored was that the Rockies were not trying to make a trade with Fuentes. If they had been trying to trade him they could have played a man short on Tuesday night, allowing him to remain on waivers. In that case, he would have cleared on Wednesday. Then the Rockies could have put him on the bereavement list or they could have traded him immediately.

As far as waivers are concerned, understand that the Rockies have asked waivers on virtually every player on their roster this month. That's standard operating procedure in the big leagues. It does not mean that teams are trying to make a trade. They, however, want to see if they can get players through waivers and that way if some type of a trade comes up unexpectedly they have flexibility to make a deal if they want.

RHP Matt Herges flew to Las Vegas Wednesday night, where he will join Triple-A Colorado Springs for a rehab assignment this weekend. Herges is expected to be activated Sept. 2. Odds are OF Ryan Spilborghs won't be activated until Monday. By leaving him on the disabled list it will provide the rockies with potential roster flexiblity if they get to the post-season.

RHP Jhoulys Chacin, who leads minor league baseball with 18 wins, goes for No. 19 today, pitching for High-A Modesto agaisnt San Jose. Chacin is 8-2 with Modesto after opening the season 10-1 with Lo-A Asheville.

FYI: Rockies catchers Chris Iannetta andYorvit Torrealba have combined for 80 RBI as a catcher (Ianneta also has one at third base and one as a pinch-hitter). It's the fourth highes sinel season total for Rockies catchers. The club record for catchers is 95 RBI in 2000.
