Baseball: Burnett, Penny free

Right-handers A.J. Burnett and Brad Penny became free agents today.

Burnett opted out of the final two years and $24 million on his contract. The injury-prone starting pitcher was 18-10 the past season with Toronto after going a combined 20-16 in injury-marred seasons of 2006-07. Burnett earned $36 million the past three seasons with the Blue Jays.

The Dodgers opted out of Penny's contract for 2009. He receives a $2 million buyout instead of an $8.75 million salary. It will be interesting to see the kind of interest Penny receives. He finished the season on the disabled list with a strained shoulder, but reportedly has been given a clean bill of health.

Penny will be looking for a multi-year deal, but would be interesting for the Rockies if he decided to take a one-year contract to try and re-establish his value after going 6-9 with a 6.77 ERA in 94 2/3 innings with the Dodgers last year.

Penny is 14-3 with a 3.06 ERA lifetime against the Rockies, and is 6-1 with a 3.92 ERA in 11 career starts at Coors Field.
