Twins' Cuddyer could interest Rockies

An intriguing name to watch in any Rockies talks about sending third baseman Garrett Atkins to Minnesota is outfielder Michael Cuddyer, who missed 2 1/2 months last season with a strained tendon in his left index finger and has fallen into a backup role because of the emergence of young Twins outfielders.

The Rockies are looking to add a quality starter in the offseason, and the Twins could offer the likes of Nick Blackburn or Kevin Slowey. But the Rockies would also like to add a right-handed, run-producing hitter in a multiple-player package, which is where Cuddyer, a strong clubhouse presence, would fit.

The Twins have rebuilt their outfield with Delmon Young in left, Carlos Gomez in center and Denard Span in right.

I can certainly imagine the Twins sending Cuddyer to the Rockies for Atkins straight up but there is no chance that they would also add Blackburn and Slowey is nearly untouchable. Cuddyer is one of the most popular Twins but 3B is a huge need and Cuddyer might be expendable now.

The only way one of the Twins young pitchers moves to the Rockies is if Holliday is also part of an expanded deal and the Twins flip him to another team for another pitcher.

Sure, the Twins could afford to lose Cuddyer, and sure, the Rockies need starting pitching, but why does that mean that the Twins would trade Blackburn/Slowey and Cuddyer for Atkins? Tracy, is this posting actually based off anything, or are you just trying to spark conversation? The Twins have said their starting pitching is untouchable.

I never have seen an article or heard an interview saying that any of the Twins young pitchers are untouchabe. If we trade one of the current starting pitchers we would still have Humber, Mulvey, Duensing, and Swarzack all pretty close if not completely ready for the bigs.

I can see the inclusion of one of the AAA pitchers Humber, Swarzak or Duensing and Cuddyer for Atkins. Atkins' value to the Twins is dependent on being able to sign him long term. Cuddyer is already signed long-term. If we have the ability to sign him prior to the trade then I might consider including Blackburn. Include Holiday and it turns the Twins into a favorite for the world series. Could be worth a rent a player and a Atkins and Holiday for Cuddyer and Blackburn and a prospect or two could be a real positive for the Twins. Who knows, Mr. Pohlad might open up the pocket book for a very real chance of creating a real dynasty.

There is no way the twins would get Holliday on top of Atkins. If the twins were to trade Cuddyer for Atkins I could see the Twins offering two or three more players like Humber and Bonser for the rights to Franklin Morales. He is still very young and probably would start in AAA for the Red Wings if a deal could be made.

The biggest reason the Twins are looking to move Cuddyer is there really is no room for him with Span, Gomez and Young in the outfield, and Kubel at DH. That and the financial commitment they would have to make rule them out of even trying to get Matt Holliday involved in this potential deal. Cuddy + 1 of the Twins AAAA pitchers (Boof, Mulvey, Swarzak, Humber) for Atkins would be great for both teams and very fair. The Twins get the righthanded infield power they certainly need, and the Rockies get a guy to replace Matt Holliday when they trade him and a young pitcher who will be under control and cheap for 3-6 years.

This looks like a deal that the Twins should be very interested in. With the abundance of outfielders, Cuddyer looks to be the guy to move. Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez have the potential to be superstars. Denard Span looks solid and has jumped into the leadoff role. All 3 are young. By getting Atkins, not only would the Twins finally get the 3rd baseman that they have been needing, but they also add that big right handed power bat they are looking for. The Twins should then sign some players long-term and lock them up in this small market team. This I feel is something they need to look into ASAP, given their current cap position. The Twins can easily afford to add a AAA pitcher, and possibly could even get a prospect in return. This is the Big deal for 09' that the Twins need to make.

Although lossing Cuddyer isn't what some might want, Span is just as good when it comes to fielding with a little more speed. Delmon is a waste of our time, it doesn't matter to me how well he can hit the ball. Unless he can catch routine pop-fly's on a consistent basis we should get him off the field and our team. He did little for us last year at the plate. I really wouldn't want to watch him struggle to improve next year because by the looks of things, he will just have a repeat of last years offensive and defensive sh*t show! Other than him I am PUMPED for the 09' season, having Neshek back is going to be huge and a breathe of fresh air for us all. Twins 09'!!!!

Slowey, Perkins, Baker and Liriano are all untouchable. Any of the AAA pitchers can be traded because they probably wont have a chance in the majors for a long time and as much as i hate to say this Cuddyer is expendable.

I would hate to see Cuddy leave MN. He's always been one of my favorites. But he hasn't been doing much as of late for us. A 3rd base acquisition would be wonderful. If it came in the form of Aitkins that may be of benefit.

We can NOT afford to lose pitchers like Blackburn and Slowey. We, honestly, need to pick up a more experience starting pitcher to counteract our staff of young guys. We can't put all three of these guys in one deal.

Sounds like a good trade to me. Atkins' numbers look better than Cuddyers' offensively. Cuddyer is a better feilder but we already have 4 outfeilders'. Atkins' number are declining since 2006, maybe it isn't a trend. If he can produce better than young did, and if young could somehow stop swinging at pitches you need a golf club to hit we just might have a team to see!!! We have the best 1-5 pitching staffs in 2008, we dont need more pitching as far as starters. WE NEED BULLPEN HELP.. BULLPEN IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS with our pitching staff. Re-sign Punto because he is a very good defensive utility guy and will be needed in the playoffs.
I think the Twins will, if healthy, make it to the playoffs in 2009 with conviction.. but health is key, no long term DL stints for anybody.

Trade Delmon Young before you get scraps for him, Trade Cuddy too. Both of these guys are pretty mediocre at best and at least atkins is a little better than mediocre. Twins honestly should have went for Holliday and dumped 1 pitcher and either the TMNT(young) or Cuddy and than went after Joe Crede or Blake for third. Twins get a new ballpark for 2010 and us taxpayers are helping pick up the tab so come come on and actually get a team that would actually have a chance at a World series not just the playoffs. Carl Pohlad is one cheap numnuts and his son is too, I think he is in the top 10 wealthiest pro sports owners in the US, what a douche.
