Francis not pitching in WBC

Contrary to an Internet report, pitcher Jeff Francis is not going to play for Canada in the World Baseball Classic this year. Francis, who was bothered by left shoulder inflammation last year, has not thrown off a mound and will be behind when spring training starts next month.

After being on the disabled list June 29 through Aug. 5, Francis returned and made seven starts. The last was Sept. 12, at which point, the Rockies again shut Francis down because of his shoulder. For insurance reasons, players who were not active when last season ended are not eligible to play in the WBC.
