D-Backs hold back Webb from NL West

Arizona is planning to hold back right-handed pitcher Brandon Webb for the third or fourth game of spring training, instead of starting him in the spring opener, against the Colorado Rockies.

By pushing Webb back, he won't face any National League West teams this spring. That's a familiar pattern for the Diamondbacks, who like to keep their top pitchers from getting too much spring training exposure against division rivals.

Rockies consider moving spring site

The Colorado Rockies are looking to move to the Phoenix area for spring training, most likely in 2011. They have been in Tucson since their inception in 1993. The only major league baseball teams with a longer tenure in Arizona are the Cubs, who have been in Mesa since 1979; the Giants, who have been in Scottsdale since 1981; and the A's, who have been in Phoenix since 1982. The Angels moved to Tempe and Seattle to Peoria in 1993, the same year the Rockies began training in Tucson.

The Rockies can opt out of their lease in Tucson because the Chicago White Sox moved to Glendale this year, leaving only the Rockies and Diamondbacks in Tucson. The Rockies looked into remaining in the Tucson area, but local officials have been unable to come up with the financial package to build a new facility.

The most likely option for the Rockies will be a shared complex with Arizona on Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler, which is on the south side of metropolitan Phoenix.

Bard gets new number in second Sox stint

Having grown up in the Denver area, Boston catcher Josh Bard has usually attempted to wear No. 7 out of respect for former Broncos quarterback John Elway. But in Bard's first tour with the Red Sox, he adjusted because Trot Nixon had No. 7. So Bard wore No. 77, which was the number Ray Bourque wore with the Avalanche and Karl Mecklenburg wore with the Broncos.

This time around, Bard is wearing No. 3, which Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx wore during his days with the Red Sox, who never retired the number because the key portion of Foxx's career was spent with the Philadelphia A's. Bard discovered No. 3 was available during an offseason search of Red Sox history.

"For a low number to be available on a team with as much history as the Red Sox really got to me," Bard told Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. "And with it being a number worn by Jimmie Foxx, I mean, why not take advantage of that?"

Mount Rockmore supplemental draft

As spring training opens for the Colorado Rockies in 2009 and we start to wonder what the future will hold, it's a good time to look back on the past and find an answer to this questions: Who are the four greatest Rockies?

We're starting with a list of 12 great Rockies filled with Blake Street Bombers, a few pitchers who have proved it is possible to survive in the thin air of Colorado, one speedster whose greatest moment might have been a home run and a couple of players who own two of the biggest moments in Rockies history. We've also added seven other Rockies with notable places in team lore to our supplemental draft. Read bios of all the players and vote here.
