Rockies Pregame

Rockies writers Tracy Ringolsby and Jack Etkin will be filing reports before every Rockies game this season.

Rockies vs. Padres, April 20 UPDATED 445 p.m.

Friday, April 20 at 12:07 AM

The Rockies officially announced that Taylor Buchholz will move into the rotation in place of injured Rodrigo Lopez. He will start Monday night agaisnt the Mets in New York. The Rockies debated wehther to move Buchholz out of the rotation or call up RHP Ubaldo Jimenez. Jimenez has had inconsistent work because of weather problems for Triple-A Colorado Springs so Buchholz was given the nod. Brian Lawrence was never a consideration. The Rockies made the decision to sever ties with him on Monday, and there was no desire to re-sign him after Lopez came out of Tuesday's game with tighteness in his right elbow.

Manager Clint Hurdle juggled the lineup, looking for an edge against San Diuego starter Chris Young, who has a tendency to try and get hitters to chase pitches up in the zone. Jamey Carroll is hitting leadoff for the first time this season, and Seve Finley will play center field and hit second. Jeff Baker is in right field.

The Rockies didn’t face Young in their three-game series at San Diego two weeks ago. They can only hope they see a repeat of Young’s last outing or something close to it.

The 6-foot-10 Young, who went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts last year at Coors Field, is coming off a dreadful start Sunday at Los Angeles where he threw 84 pitches, left after failing to retire the five batters he faced in the third and gave up seven hits and five runs, four earned, with five walks and two strikeouts.

Players currently on the Rockies roster are 18-for-114 (.158) against Young. Garrett Atkins is 3-for-13 with two homers. But Steve Finley is 2-for-19 with nine strikeouts, Todd Helton is 3-for-12 with two doubles, Brad Hawpe is 2-for-11 with one double and Matt Holliday and Yorvit Torrealba are 2-for-9, including five strikeouts for Torrealba.

The Giles brothers have caused trouble for Rockies starter Josh Fogg. Brian is 8-for-16 with two triples and two homers. Marcus is 9-for-15 with a double.

The Rockies will see a familiar face in this series. Left-hander Justin Hampson, whom the Padres claimed off waivers from Colorado in October, was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Portland and right-handed reliever Mike Thompson was optioned there. Hampson made his Padres debut against Arizona and gave up singles to the two batters he faced.

At Portland, Hampson went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in six games and held opposing batters to a .190 (4-for-21) average.Hampson, who is San Diego’s only left-handed reliever, went 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA at Triple-A Colorado Springs in 31 games, including 13 starts. He joined the Rockies in September and in five games, one a start, went 1-0 with a 7.50.
