Rockies Pregame

Rockies writers Tracy Ringolsby and Jack Etkin will be filing reports before every Rockies game this season.

Wednesday April 18 Updated with lineups

Wednesday, April 18 at 11:35 AM

The Dodgers made some lineup adjustments, giving veteran players the night off after traveling from Arizona last night and with a day game on Thursday.
Neither 2B Jeff Kent nor LF Luis Gonzalez are in the Dodger lineup tonight.

The lineups:
Rockies
CF Steve Finely (lh)
2B Jamey Carroll (rh)
3B Garrett Atkins (rh)
1B Todd Helton (lh)
LF Matt Holliday (rh)
RF Brad Hawpe (lh)
C Yorvit Torrealba (rh)
SS Troy Tulowtizki (rh)
P Rodrigo Lopez (rh)

Dodgers
SS Rafael Furcal (sh)
CF Juan Pierre (lh)
1B Nomar Garciaparra (rh)
C Mike Lieberthal (rh)
RF Andre Ehtier (lh)
LF Brady Clark (rh)
3B Wilson Betemit (sh)
2B Ramon Martinez (rh)
P Derek Lowe (rh)

When Boston came to Coors Field in June of 2004, Derek Lowe pitched an impact game. Using primarily his sinker, he shutout the Rockies on four hits for seven innings, and Rockies right-hander Aaron Cook became convinced he could win at altitude, too, with his sinker.
Funny thing is Lowe returns to Coors Field tonight with the Dodgers, looking to somehow recapture that magic because his four starts at altitude since haven’t been much to get excited about. In the last tow years he is 1-1 in four starts, allowing 15 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings.
He has particular trouble with Brad Hawpe, who not only has a .542 average against him but also four home runs. Matt Holliday is hitting .579. Garrett Atkins, meanwhile, is at .214.

Rodrigo Lopez starts for the Rockies, having been pushed back from Sunday because of right elbow tightness. He says he feels fine. The Dodgers will let hi know for sure. There are two Dodgers who haunt him – Rafael Furcal (.462) and Nomar Garciaparra (.400).
The rest of the Dodgers projected lineup, however is a combined 3-for-23 against Lopez.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Yorvit Torrealba get the start at catcher again tonight, and then Chris Iannetta return on Thursday afternoon when lefty Mark Hendrickson is expected to start for the Dodgers. Manager Clint Hurdle has never been one to have a catcher start day game after night game so it becomes a matter of which matchups Hurdle likes for his catchers and the opposition starting pitchers.
