Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnett at Red Rocks
Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, T Bone Burnett
Saturday night, Red Rocks
Grade: A
A lot of artists are on the road this summer, but for the most part it's a meat-and-potatoes concert season - a lot of the same old acts coming through to rehash the same old songs. That has its charms but can be monotonous.
That may be one reason why fans so eagerly anticipated Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnett bringing their Raising Sand folk/bluegrass revue to Red Rocks. Fans who weren't on the ball were completely shut out Saturday night, as the show has been dead sold-out for weeks (Red Rocks officials dealt with the disappointed requests by putting a handwritten sign up outside the box office saying no, not a single ticket was left).
What those fans got was a concert made up of almost entirely new country/folk/bluegrass material, along with a few rock covers and radically reworked versions of semi-obscure classic-rock rarities. And the 9,000 or so fans who witnessed it were in heaven.
As were the musicians, all of who were clearly having the time of their lives, performing music that they were absolutely in love with under a deep blue Red Rocks sky. It doesn't hurt that you have two singers, Plant and Krauss, whose voices are forces of nature unto themselves.
"Hey, Red Rocks, where you been?" Plant shouted in his first return to the venue since playing there with Led Zeppelin bandmate Jimmy Page in 1998. Burnett noted ruefully that he had never been to Red Rocks before this show, adding "I don't know how I missed that ... what an act of creation this was."
After the triumphant Led Zeppelin reunion in London late last year a full tour might have had a prayer if Plant were not so rightfully overjoyed with his new project with Krauss and Burnett. Zep fans may be disappointed by that, but the visits to the Zeppelin catalog during Saturday night's show were amazing. Black Dog made for a wonderful duet; The Battle of Evermore got its finest outing since Sandy Denny sang the original with Plant; and the lesser Zeppelin cut Black Country Woman was a sheer delight, opening with just Plant's voice and a banjo and ending in a heavier version than Zep ever pulled off.
Opening with Rich Woman and ending the main set with the hit Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On), the trio (backed by a stunningly tight band) darted from Raising Sand album tracks to solo glories that included a country-fied version of In the Mood from Plant and Burnett's Primitives. Krauss held the entire crowd rapt with her a cappella reading of Down To the River to Pray.
Besides most of the Raising Sand album the trio threw in covers like Leave My Woman Alone, which might appear on the heavily rumored follow-up album. If nothing else, it'll certainly make an appearance when two shows later in the tour are professionally filmed for a DVD release. One hopes those future performances shine as much as the Red Rocks show did.
Pennsylvania folkie Sharon Little opened the show at the headliners' request, connecting warmly with the crowd on her more rowdy numbers but drifting away when she tried to pull off club ballads.

Great show! As awesome as Plant and Krauss were, it didn't hurt any to have two of the most incredible Nashville musicians currently on the scene -- Stuart Duncan and Buddy Miller -- in the band.
As hard as it might be to imagine Alison Kraus singing "Black Dog," it might be even harder to imagine Robert Plant singing one of the simplest and saddest bluegrass songs ever: "Your Long Journey." But both were absolutely first-rate, and didn't come off as "tricks" (as in, "oooh, isn't THAT interesting?") but each of them as perfect in their own right. And so was everything in between. One of the best concerts in a long time IMHO.

Oh Lord, did these people see the same concert I did? Talk about dull. I mean Dull with a capital 'D'. I left before the encore because I figured it'd be better to beat traffic than hold out hope for a little life from the band. I wasn't alone.
Now I'll admit I'm not a huge bluegrass fan (so some of you can write me off right now) but I don't dislike it. But is it too much to ask that the band act like they're enjoying what they're doing? Can you show a little energy? Please? I could have caught a nap if it weren't for the incessant babbling of the women behind me.
And while I have always been a Zeppelin fan, I was not so foolish as to expect this to be a Zep concert. But for God's sake, it is Robert Plant after all. Can you throw me a bone? They managed to not butcher Evermore and BC Woman too bad, but Black Dog, one of the greatest Rock and Roll songs of all time, was a freakin' sleeping pill. Spare me!
What we saw was Alison Kraus and her band, with some old guy they found and brought along for the sake of novelty. Sold some tickets, I suppose. Sad.

This show was a great surprise. I'm not a bluegrass fan and I never even made it through a complete listening of "Raising Sand", but I was thoroughly entertained Saturday night.
First, it really does matter where your seats are when you see a live show. I had a great seat fairly close and the sound was awesome. If you are too far back at ANY show, you will not enjoy it as much as if you were close.
That said (and this said), I have seen Zeppelin 3 times and the Page/Plant tours as well. I knew better than to expect any sort of Zeppelin-like treatment of Robert's older work.
I was COMPLETELY impressed by T-Bone and the band, particularly the drummer. He did the most with the least I've seen in quite some time. One cymbal? Come on! He made the kit sound like cannons and played with many different styles, sticks and rhythms. Notice the tambourine attached to his left foot?
The rest of the guys were great and I can see why Robert enjoys playing with them so much. They are talented and worthy musicians.
Now Allison is not really my cup of tea musically, but she has great talent. I could not go back and listen to her music repeatedly, but watching her perform is mesmerizing. She has fantastic range and her abilities on violin are amazing.
All in all, it was a great show, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The band was really enjoying it as well which may not be as evident if you are not close. The sly grins, winks, nods and smiles between them told the story. Robert loves Red Rocks and I’m sure had been looking forward to this particular stop on the tour for some time.
To sum it up, I agree with Mark that this show was an “A?. Will I go out and purchase the CD? No, but the concert itself was top notch. I’m glad I went.

I've been a long-time Zep fan, and for the past 15 years have been involved in bluegrass music. This match-up of talent is something that could only have come from the mind of T-Bone Burnett. His insight into the success of this pairing is only matched by his artistic use of reverb and tremolo.
This music is like a relaxing midnight swim in the deep-end of T-Bone Burnett's swimming pool.

You might have been in heaven if you were in the first 20 rows, but in row 58 the sound was weak and the crowd polite but bordering on indifferent.
And polite was the problem. Allison Krauss' lack of engagement with the audience put Robert Plant in the tough position of toning down his own charisma so as not to overwhelm the whole production.
The show would have been great at The Paramount, but it didn't work for we plebes in the back at Red Rocks.
And should there be another album and tour, you'll find tickets a little easier to come by...

I saw Robert and Alison a different venue and while it was good show if I wanted to hear someone hit a few bum notes [which everyone noticed] and miss a line in Battle of Evermore, would go see a Led Zeppelin cover band. But of course Alison was flawless and deserves credit for making his screw-ups less noticeable

Monkeydog, you are certainly due your opinion of the show, but T-Bone Burnett is not simply an "old guy for novelty". In the extra time you and your mom (thanks Billy) had in not dealing with the traffic after the show, you should have looked him up and learned a little about the genesis of what is called rock music today. That is, I assume the old guy to were talking about is Burnett, because if you are referring to Plant, you should have your opinion priveleges revoked for good and be slapped silly.

I think that explains a lot. Sure not everyone can sit up close, but it makes a huge difference in the experience. I have (and you as well, I assume) have seen MANY shows at Red Rocks. If you are above the top of the permanent stage structure's roof (about row 30?) then the sound can and does get blown around and it is not as loud as it is if you are closer. I have been up there for Santana (years ago) and was disappointed because the people around me talked through the entire show. I bet you could see the most fantastic show imaginable and if you are too far back your enjoyment is reduced proportionately. The video screen helps a little, but you are just too far away to make it intimate.
Now, back to Plant/Krauss, yes, not really a perfect showcase for Robert's vocal talent. I'm a rocker at heart and would love to see him tackle some killer jams with full force. I thought the 1998 Page/Plant show was as close to a Zep show as possible. I saw several on that tour and knew they would light up Red Rocks. I saw Robert solo at Red Rocks in 1988 (July 4th) and that was a great show. Still, it was not Zep and he was pushing his solo stuff, but still a great show.
I would not care to see multiple concerts on this current tour, but the show they put on for us was better (IMO) than others on this tour just because of how much they enjoyed themselves.
Again, for me the concert experience is directly tied to several factors. 1) Your seat location. 2) People around you being courteous. 3) Expectations being met musically. Sounds like your experience missed out on those. Mine hit all three, so my evening was completely different even though we attended the same show.

Im not sorry to say this: it sucked. Ive been in college bands with better sound production(yeah whatever, its true). My 2cents. T-BONE and Alison have found a way to tap into the aging boomer nostalgia trip for ca$h; anyone remember burnettes last "genius" album with krauss and elvis costello? BTW id like to hear what he has to think about this travelling turd. And its a real shame. I liked the album. "Liked" being operative. It has gone limp for me too. and Monkey boy, i thought your impression of Plant as looking like a man out of his element was right on. was almost embarrasing to watch. Im not a "zeppelin fan" that was way before my day but i can appreciate that, that was at least authentic. this was....ah, something else altogether.

I missed the show but have been watching Alison and Robert performances on Video/TV. To me, it looks like Robert is holding back as to not overwhelm Alison. She has a very pleasant, melodic voice but there are no "balls" to it which is kinda what is needed to perform with Robert and bring out HIS best. It's kinda "old-age-home-ish". He looks like he desperately wants to "let loose" and then remembers where he is and just "stops right there". Kinda frustrating to watch and as someone here said "embarrassing".

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

While it can be tempting if you, for instance, obtain an offer from an insurance plan company soon after your accident to settle your declare for, say, 800 there are some crucial reasons why you must be wary of accepting the offer. Firstly, the insurance providers offer to settle your claim will be in 'full and final settlement' of your claim. This implies that if you take the offer and then continue to undergo from your accidents for significantly lengthier than you predicted, you will not be ready to go back and declare further compensation. It is probably, in this situation, that you will have been below-compensated for your injuries.
