Mile High Music Festival winds down
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' string of Red Rocks shows over the past few years have pretty much shown he can do no wrong in Colorado. By headlining the first night of the Mile High Music Festival he cemented that bond with a crowd that would have filled four Red Rocks.
Hit machine that he is, he gave the crowd exactly what it wanted. The first five songs - You Wreck Me, Listen To Her Heart, I Won't Back Down, Even the Losers and Free Fallin' - were interrupted only by brief "How is everybody doing tonight?" patter. His setlist of late has been heavy on these hits with a couple of very welcome rarities tossed in. End of the Line is rescued from Traveling Wilburys obscurity in his most recent concerts with a gentle but rocking version. The crowd wildly cheered the "I'm just happy to be here / happy to be alive" line.
Even better, Steve Winwood joined the band for Can't Find My Way Home and Gimme Some Lovin'. Amazing collaboration.
As the night turned to a more bearable 86 degrees Petty kept it up with Last Dance for Mary Jane and more hits. Watch for a full review of the entire festival in Monday's Rocky Mountain News.

That, by the way, is Mike Campbell (AKA the world's most underrated guitarist) with Petty. Every time I see them the Heartbreakers are an ever-tighter unit. Tonight they simply blasted through their set. As far as I can tell, the Winwood collaboration is a one-off thing, just for us. Sweet.

Phenomenal show!!! I've been trying to see Tom and the boys for nearly 20 years but something always came up. Not tonight...screamin'. I got everything I had waited for and more....and you could not have asked for a more beautiful Colorado night, full moon, easy breeze. We were out of there in 25 minutes and stayed for the entire show.

You are correct, John. Winwood HAS joined Petty for those two songs on select other dates, including the Hollywood Bowl. Still seems somewhat rare, so I was glad to see it.
