Flashback: Robert Plant in 2002
Back in 2002, Robert Plant released his Dreamland album and was giving approval to the footage that ended up being Led Zeppelin's DVD release. He spoke for a few minutes (fewer than planned, as you'll see).
Q: Where are you?
A: I'm on the Welsh border. I'm looking west. Sun is just arcing in the sky toward Snowden and the big hills. It's a great day. There's been a lawnmower whirring way off. It sounds like the beginning of a Kurt Vonnegut book.
Q: Dreamland is something you've talked about a long time, but it's the kind of project that artists rarely go through with. Was it just time to actually do it?
A: In a roundabout way. What happened was three years ago I'd just completed a very successful round with Jimmy Page in the Walking Into Clarksdale period. We'd received a Grammy for the track Most High and we ended up playing in Paris at an Amnesty International gig. We were playing with Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead and the Dali Lama was giving a speech. I thought about everything I'd done up to that point, and about where music had gone and where I was in the middle of everything. And I said to Jimmy 'I think I've got to get off now. I've got to just get off at this particular juncture and go away for a bit.' I just saw the consumption of time, and how much time is really taken up on these projects. There's lots of things I want to do. I packed it up and went to India. With my girlfriend I went to southern Thailand. I went to Cuba. I looked around again. I wanted to get some spirit going. When I started to sing after a period of time, I really missed singing. I missed hearing the echoes and the repeats and the spiraling vocal effects and all that cosmic shit. I really wanted to hear it again. I went for these songs because I didn't want to sing anything from my past. I wasn't joining up and competing. I was actually doing obscure gigs in the Arctic Circle in northern Norway where the sun never sets. I was going off to jazz festivals in southern France and playing with Duke Ellington's orchestra one minute, then going off and playing with B.B. King in a fortified Italian medieval town the next, with no record, no names, no nothing. Just doing it. I went to my record collection and picked out all sorts of stuff. In the beginning I did James Brown stuff - the early stuff from Live at the Apollo. I did Think. I did Early in the Morning by Ray Charles. I did early British rockabilly. Then I started doing all the West Coast stuff that I'd always loved. I loved the intention and lyrical content and the fact that it was music of a revolution. All the time I was doing this, I had no intention of making a record. And then one day I just left the band I was playing with and came together with the guys who are on this record. Suddenly the songs took on attitude. They weren't polite marks of respect. They were these great floods of passion and flourish. And I cherished these songs. I thought 'Well, do I play the game again? Is it going to be called a bunch of covers? Will it just get lost? Will it get on the radio? Does it matter? Am I happy?' I thought so long as everything is positive, I'll do it. And I did it, and the critical response has been fantastic.
Q: A lot of the reviews have pointed out that this sounds like the first time you're in a real band again since Zeppelin.
A: Yeah! It's a most amazing union of souls and intention. The thing is, everybody in this band has played the game and in some way or another been affected by commercial success - me supremely so. But everybody knows what it's like to be big, to be successful. But success is like the tiers of a cake. When you start playing an instrument in your house, you want to play with other people and be in a band. Or you wanna be in an orchestra or be part of a great moment. And once you're in a moment like I was so many times, you wanna take that moment to its zenith, to its peak. And then you wanna create something else. And I think everybody in this band knows what those parameters are, and chose this because it has such a great payback. That payback is the sort of chemistry that operates between us. It really is something special. I know I've been in great bands, and Led Zeppelin was an amazing, fantastic band. My work with those guys, especially with Jimmy, was without compare in some areas. But to me now, at this point in time, this is something I could never have wished for. It's as real as real can be. It may not mean a thing to a guy who drives a truck all day who wants to hear Stairway to Heaven, but I'm 53. I know what I'm doing.
Q: I think when you hit the level of success you did, people think of you as a rock star instead of a musician anymore. This record kind of reminds people of the musician.
A: I'm basically just a catalyst, some kind of interpreter or some kind of dodgy messenger, bringing down these tunes - which are all American tunes, with a couple or three of my own. It's an initiation into the beauty of American music from another time, but presented ... the thing is, it can't all be brash. If I listen to alternative rock radio in America now, I think 'Hmm. Is this the mark of an old man when I don't get it? Where is the rebel yell? I don't hear it. I can hear a lot of questionable lyrics and a lot of anger and anguish, but I still hear Pearl Jam parts 10, 11 and 12. I just wanna add this little bit here and they can take it or leave it. If you put it on at the right time, it can have an effect.
Q: Many of these songs are obscure, but some are quite well known, like Hey Joe and One More Cup of Coffee. Any hesitation in taking on songs where there are definitive versions already out there?
A: None at all. It had already been crafted as part of an obscure stage performance which occasionally was reviewed on the internet on one of the Led Zeppelin sites. There was no hesitation because I'd already been doing them for a year. It's just that I'd chosen places to go which weren't really places that attracted any attention whatsoever. People said 'Oh, Jimmy Page is with the Black Crowes and Robert Plant's gone somewhere really weird ...
Q: With some guys we've never heard of, doing songs we don't know.
A: Yeah! And he keeps smiling! Ha ha ha!
Q: I was surprised to see a quote in an earlier interview saying you felt irrelevant as a lyricist. One, that's always been a strength of yours, and two, when people do get irrelevant as lyricists, they're always the last to know it and they always embarrass themselves.
A: (Laughs). I didn't have any choice. When I concluded the Walking into Clarksdale tour, I kinda said goodbye to my partner. Jimmy and I wrote some good stuff on that Clarksdale album, some quite sensitive stuff - When I Was a Boy. There were some really neat little pieces. I didn't have a person to steer toward; I just wanted to sing these songs. It was only during the process with the band Strange Sensation that I began to go 'Hey, why don't you put that there, I'll do this vocal line here from Poor Howard by Ledbelly. And there we were. It all started again. Toward the end of the Dreamland sessions I started writing again. We've written quite a few bits and pieces. At sound checks along the way now we're compiling quite a bit of good stuff. It's a quite exciting combination of musicians that are very grounded but very spacey. I know that sounds ridiculous. But the musical ambition is quite vast. I know we didn't make a record that's suitable for American radio formats now.
Q: Well, hardly anything is.
A: Yeah. I guess it's difficult to get these nuances on serviceable radio to promote the album. But I think that's ok; we've got to make music for music's sake here, just like we did way back when it caught fire.
Q: Given the distance and time between your Zeppelin and solo material, do you have a new outlook on it now? In recent years you've played songs you've never played before - Tea for One, In the Light.
A: Anything goes, anytime. The tapestry of the music, the pictures that come up, are governed by the people I've got around me to play them. When we start the next leg of the tour I'm gonna do a couple of solo things that I really like that I haven't done for years. Hurting Kind is one track. When we do it, it has a pretty high temperature. I want to do Hurting Kind and Tie Die on the Highway from Manic Nirvana. The trippy elements of Tie Dye is quite appropriate for what we're dong now. Anything can go, at any time.
Q: How tough is it to get radio play? I thought Clarksdale had plenty of radio-ready songs.
A: I thought that too, yeah.
Q: When the World Was Young should have been a huge hit. Does that disappoint you? Do you wanna be back at the top of the charts?
A: I didn't know too much about the game in the Zeppelin days. It was just kind of a rage that overcame the land. I didn't know ... I know that we played Stairway to Heaven onstage before it ever came out, and I know the audience was dumbfounded and there was hardly a ripple of applause. It is all about making something big on the radio. When I'm driving along in a car in America, I really have to search. And when I find a station I'm into, I think I've found nirvana. That depends on me and where I am. Yeah, you're right; When the World Was Young was classic. But the thing is, Page and I created something ramshackle there; it was the essence of what was good about us. And what was good about us is still a very wondrous thing. But the thing is, generations of people now, current buyers of CDs - and there aren't many left - I think they only see Zeppelin as a retro, something to listen to on Friday night - Rock 'n' Roll, When the Levee Breaks, that kind of thing. I think if Led Zeppelin suddenly chirped up tomorrow and made a record, I think it would be very interesting and a bit of a dodgy experiment to see whether or not it had any relevance at all. I think Walking Into Clarksdale was another Led Zep album. It's interesting, isn't it? Maybe everything's stuck in its own time. In the whole of Europe, Elvis was #1 all last month. Did you hear it?
Q: Yeah, they finally started playing it over here.
A: It's fantastic. It sold 200,000 copies in a week in England. And Eminem, who's supposed to be the biggest thing in the world, managed a quarter of that. No matter how smart and glib Eminem is, in the end a big voice and a huge melody has got to win the day. It's just that radio embraced it everywhere because it's got that Euro/disco beat and it's got the King wailing away underneath. And it was an audacious lyric. It was funny.
Q: I know. It was an Elvis song I'd completely forgotten about.
A: Me too! I mean, I knew the song, but yeah - I was so pleased to hear it. Something to go out and buy!
Q: Fans will kill me if I don't ask a few Zep questions.
A: That's fine.
Q: I've been reading about the DVD and live album that Jimmy is compiling. Live Zep is something the fans are dying for.
A: Yes, it's sitting on my table about 25 yards from here right now.
Q: And what's it looking like?
A: It's looking like two VHSes at the moment. Ha! But it's looking good. Some great footage. Very exciting visuals.
Q: Do you know where the stuff was pulled from? There have always been rumors that Bath '70 was filmed...
A: Yeah, we always had it. We had nearly everything but a few home movie clips that we didn't know about. And Jimmy found amazing live stuff in America from 1970, I think, which sounds phenomenal. The tapes haven't even been run across a machine for 30 years. The fear was that they would just crumble to dust and it would be like "Spinal Tap: The Sequel." (laughs) Or maybe it is the sequel anyway!
Q: Can you reveal what's in there? There are rumors of Knebworth, Earls Court '75 ...
A: Yes, all there. That's all there.
Q: Fans think that the six shows at the LA Forum in June of 1977 are among your finest ever. Do you know if those were ever professionally recorded?
A: I don't think it was professionally recorded. It was crap. It wasn't the best tour we ever did. One night would be great and the next night would be dreadful. We have a saying in England that what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander...
(At this point the publicist cuts in to say we're nearly out of time - Plant says "Let me finish up with this chap." She says OK - then accidentally cuts us off. It takes another call to London and 10 more minutes to get reconnected briefly).
Q: Hello?
A: Hey Mark, I've got to go. Some people have just arrived.
Q: Can I ask one more question? Your first Zeppelin show in America was here in Denver the day after Xmas in 1968 and it seems to be a mystery - no tape has ever surfaced and no one seems to remember it very well.
A: I remember it, yeah! It was snowing. We opened the show. Taj Mahal was on the bill and so was Vanilla Fudge. It was in a theater downtown - probably the one I'm playing now.
Q: No, they tore it down.
A: Downtown Denver wasn't much fun then, I know that. Gotta go to Boulder.
Q: Good show? Bad show? Were you nervous?
A: Nervous as hell. Bonzo and I had never seen America before. We were 20 years old. And I'm only 22 now! It's gone so quick!

Mark, I'm so glad to read this. It's interesting to go back and gain perspective on these situations.
Plant: "I think if Led Zeppelin suddenly chirped up tomorrow and made a record, I think it would be very interesting and a bit of a dodgy experiment to see whether or not it had any relevance at all." So there was Plant giving thought in an interview of considering the hypothetical new Zeppelin album of the 21st century.
Does he dismiss the notion (and ultimately decide against it) because he basically feels it's already been done (i.e. Walking into Clarksdale, which he even states was, in his mind, essentially a Led Zep album) and we know how that went?
If you could go back in time and ask Plant another question, what would it be? I think mine would be: When you play these old songs and write your two or three new ones, why Porl Thompson and Justin Adams, and not Jimmy Page? That might get to the answer of my question above.

Just wanted to add a little more ...
Probed by David Cavanagh in an interview in March 2008 for Uncut Magazine, Jimmy Page admits that he and Robert Plant had enough leftover material (unrecorded, presumably) after Walking into Clarksdale that "there could have been a follow-up" disc.
"I had some new material written for another album," he details. "I had about a dozen numbers, and some of them were really good, but Robert heard them and he wanted to go in another direction. He wanted to do another solo album. Fair enough."
I just don't get why whatever Robert wanted to do necessarily had to exclude Jimmy Page. But hey, he's free to do whatever he wants and with whomever. I just haven't heard a detailed enough explanation of why things turned out the way they did.

It's always good to see interviews with Robert where he's able to talk about his solo material as he wishes without the reviewer imposing a framework of the past on it.
Why do we need a detailed explanation of Robert's musical choices? I think he explained it well enough in saying "we've got to make music for music's sake here, just like we did way back when it caught fire." Robert and Jimmy are not joined at the hip. As Robert says, he knows what he's doing and he's given us some fantastic solo material over the years... and continues to do so.

Listen to his interviews: it's about variety, exploring, feeling trapped etc. He says music is not a job but luxury. I think that is sufficient explanation.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
