Maynard James Keenan - the long interview

You can read the print version of the Maynard James Keenan interview here.

But here's the long version I didn't have to trim down:

What's your history with wine?
"I just kind of tend to follow my nose and it led me to wine. I didn't really drink as a kid or as a teenager. I didn't have a big Italian family with wine with dinner. The attractive part to me was all of sudden discovering a whole art form, the magic that surrounds a perfectly crafted wine."
It's an interesting subculture; people can really get drawn into that world.
"I think that's changing. I think there's an army of people who are casually getting into it. They're finding new wine shops and tasting rooms that have demystified the process. There's no pinkie extended. Do you like what's in this glass or do you not? It's about trusting your palate."
Is that the industry responding and changing its image?
"I think it's more of us finally catching up with the damage done by prohibition. I think that they would be a heck of a lot more wineries across the U.S. if prohibition hadn't happened. It interrupted our growing appreciation for wine and our European roots. It would have just found its way everywhere. Then making it a jailable offense to create it pretty much undermined a huge industry."
What are growing conditions like in Arizona?
"We're in the high desert. What we're getting out of Arizona would be similar territory to what you find in southern Rhone, parts of Bordeaux, parts of Burgundy, Spain and Italy. It's a mishmash of all of that. We get snow in the winter, gets warm in the summer, but overall we're a cooler climate than say Paso Robles (Calif.). They grow fantastic wines in Paso Robles and it's hotter than it is here. That's a misconception. People picture cactus and tumbleweeds."
How do the grapes respond?
"If you find the right slope with the right exposure you actually get some fantastic morning sun. It's tempered by not getting too hot. The grape doesn't actually have to shut down, it doesn't get so high over 100 degrees that the grape can't do anything, can't progress. In the right spot in Arizona that grape gets to flex in a perfect situation all day long. On slopes you don't have to deal with the problems of frost or temperature issues with the hot air or cold air just sitting there. In Arizona the growing season can tend to start earlier than other places. We were harvesting our (cabernet) on one of the spots in the first week of September. Most places in California aren't getting it till October."
What's most difficult about growing there?
"Water's gong to be an issue everywhere. It's a little bit of an issue for us. Also just some of our spots we have issues with cold. If we don't have fans going in the winter we can get winter kill. Once that cold air sits on the grapes long enough you lose them."
Are there grapes that just won't make it there?
"Hard to say. I'm sure there's a microclimate somewhere around there for Pinot but we haven't gotten that far yet."
People think of Napa for wine, but I was surprised to find wine country outside of Cleveland.
"All it's going to take is one more winegrowing region outside of California to let people know this is a real thing. Now you know your spot. People other than California can grow grapes. That's the first step. The second step - and I think the economy is going to lend itself to this - is to get people to think more locally. Not try to make this a huge business with investors and take it to some other level, try to take over the world with it. The idea is to keep it sustainable. You can make a modest living, be very comfortable, and make a fantastic wine that's hands-on and specific to your area."
How hard is it to get your wine tasted and reviewed?
"The short answer is that it's very competitive. The way that each state has its liquor laws makes it even more difficult. There's the added complication of all the legal hurdles you have to jump through, and every state is different. Trying to navigate that gauntlet is a task in and of itself."
Is it like marketing your music? Is there competition for prime shelf space in stores?
"I would imagine it is. But like I said, we're trying to go around the back door, reinvent the situation. I'm going to be opening my own tasting room and Eric already has his own tasting room. He hasn't bothered to go outside of the state ...because he doesn't need to. People in his wine club and come to his tasting room. He sells out every year. He's doing 5,000 or 6,000 cases. Most of that is direct to consumer and direct to retail."
You're doing a bottle-signing here in Denver. Is that normal in the wine business?
"I don't think so. The controversial side of it is it's mostly music fans showing up to stare at my head. But the upside of that is that hopefully they're going to take the wine home and drink it and realize there's a whole world of art out there they haven't discovered yet. Now you've got a whole new army of wine aficionados."
What do you like about that world?
"I just think it's like any other art. It's about widening and honing your senses. It's a form of expression. The more you tap into things that are occurring naturally and get the human element in there, focus it and tell the story, the more you do that job well, it follows that you're developing your senses."
That's the opposite of what many businesses try to do, which is franchising and homogenization of a product.
"When
you travel internationally you start to find that in less-homogenized areas. The not-booming towns - a little tiny town in France or outside of Perth in Australia. They're not Meccas. It's people growing their own food, making these fantastic wines, and that's the meal you remember - not the fancy restaurant in New York."
Wine is also more in the fabric of culture in other countries. There they drink wine, here it's Miller and Bud.
"Exactly. You notice how beer drinkers over the years, the microbrewery thing caught on. That's because for the most part when prohibition ended beer was more available ... People want to taste different things. They want to see what other hands can do. Some of that is regional, but some of that is artists pushing themselves. Eric says it best - his interpretation is that wine should express the landscape where it came from. Not just the landscape, but that particular year of wine should express that year, not the year prior or after. It should be an expression of that time, as an artist, being able to take those grapes, drink it, close your eyes, and you feel like you're sitting in that area."
Do you have to train yourself to be able to taste that?
"The biggest hurdle people have to get over is that they're required to know all those things. All you're required to do is please yourself and decide whether you like it or not. ...I play pool now and then. I'm not a shark. I just enjoy it. If I wanted to get into it deep I could, but I don't feel like I have to. I don't feel like I can't play a game of pool because I don't know how to do it like Minnesota Fats."
How much of your time does this take?
"Probably half my time. Actually more. I spend more of my time now with the winery than the music, but it does go back and forth."
Will that be a problem? You were pretty busy to start with.
"No, I think some of that stuff has to slow down as you get older. You have to reevaluate what's important. And I think family is more important. I think vineyards in general tend to be a cornerstone of a solid, economic stabilizer. They really foster community and really nurture family."

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
