The border within

A yearlong investigation by the Rocky found many criminal immigrants have gone free in Colorado to commit worse crimes, including child abuse, kidnapping, sexual assault and murder. Meanwhile, half the illegal immigrants deported from Colorado last year had no criminal record.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials say they're overwhelmed by the numbers and say they are trying to get rid of the worst offenders.

The lead story in today's installment of the five-day series highlights a pattern in which the net designed to catch illegal immigrants allows many criminals to slip through while catching many who haven't broken any law except for being in the country illegally. For example, Mexican man with a long record of drunk driving and probation violations who had never been turned over to ICEofficials; he killed a 32-year-old Denver father. Conversely, a Longmont woman on her way to becoming a legal resident, made an unathorized trip to Mexico to visit her critically-ill mother. She was caught re-entering the U.S. and faces deportation. Her husband is a legal resident, her children are U.S. citizens. The story of her situation runs Thursday.

This link takes you to an index of all the stories each day.

Read the stories and tell us what you think. Does ICE have their priorities wrong? Should their main focus be on criminals to the exclusion of those who are here illegally without criminal records? Should Congress commit to a major overhaul of ICE to strengthen its capabilities?

All unauthorized aliens should either be deported or denied re-entry if caught. There is no in-between if the sovereignty of this country is to be maintained and the out-of control illegal immigration problem is to be corrected.

There is always an excuse for why someone breaking our immigration laws should be allowed amnesty. The millions of anchor children that were planted on our soil represent the worst abuses of a constitutional provision that was never meant to justify illegal immigration by the parents.

Our Congress needs to listen to the will of the people and create funds and a workforce to tackle these problems instead of pandering to ethnic voters.

The truth is - the only economy that would crumble if the current illegal immigration flows were to be reversed is Mexico.

    Enough is enough.

We will not be able to deport illegal immigrants criminal or not until the border is sealed. The story points out how the illegals we have deported can just come right back in.No matter how sorrowful the stories of deportation,we cannot let one law breaker go and not the other. If the woman with 4 kids wants to be with her husband she can go back to Argentina with him and make a nice life there. It was pointed out she had a 8th grade education and was struggling with English and had already failed the citizenship test. She also keeps having children they can't afford and is blackmailing us into letting her husband go ,because if we don't she will go on welfare. She is not a citizen yet deport her with her husband.

As far as the criminals thats their occupation. The know how to work the system and can move freely back and forth over the border.

As far as ICE not having enough detention room.We have thousands of open land on the eastern plains.Have the National Guard set up tent cities here and surround them with razor wires and Guardsmen.Let them be held there until deportation. The guardsmen and women can be close to home and work in shifts.

Hiring more Ice Agents is a must. Also sealing the border is a must.Deporting anyone illegal in this country that is arrested or somehow caught even though they did not break a law, they are here illegally and all must be deported.Just because they have children born in this country doesn't mean they can't take them with them. They won't be breaking the families up,that's a stupid argument because families move all the time ,so why not move back to their parents country they came from?

They shouldn't even imprison illegals for crimes.Once they are convicted and our border sealed send them back to their countries.Let them wreck havoc there.Saves us the prison space and if they come back in the country then we can sentence them to life in prison without parole. So then we will know they won't commit anymore crimes and can't sneak back in once we deport them.

It's obvious we have more than a major problem with illegals in this country.

It's time to crack down on the illegal immigrants, but we need to give the people on the front lines,ie,border patrol,ICE,prison authorities, local and state law offices etc... more support so they can deal with this problem.

Our enforcement officials are severely under funded and understaffed...and have been for years. This isn't a partisan issue, as administrations of both parties have been guilty of ignoring the financial needs of our ICE officials. Until we can figure out a way to give them the proper support, we'll continue to see enforcement with these types of holes in them. That still doesn't change the fact that mass deportation and the criminalization of illegal immigration would devastate our economy....and simply don't have the support of the American people ( http://www.pollingreport.com/immigration.htm ). In my opinion, a well executed gradual amnesty program and effective enforcement of our labor laws would go a long way towards balancing the equation.

Vote out the Republicans since they can't seem to get anything done even with the solid majority in Congress and the Presidency? Vote the Dems in? Vote the incumbents out for the anti-immigration candidates? What will the November vote do for us.

Finally, I wonder why this is such a hot issue now. Partisan politics are necessary for our system but wedge issues are polarizing and don't help solve the issues at hand. For example, I agree the border must be secure, but ONLY securing the border doesn't fix the problem. the border is a wedge issue that keeps us, Americans all, from finding solutions to our problems.

It is obvious that ICE is underfunded and I'm sure that was done on purpose by Congress.

As far as the articles today, the most important issue raised was the secrecy issue. I suspect that was intentional, as well. Why should the status of illegals be more secret than any court proceeding involving an American citizen? There is something wrong with that picture. Our government keeps statistics on just about everything. But not on illegals and crime. Why?

About six months ago, a conservative columnist attempted to find out how many murders were committed by illegals. What he found was that virtually nobody in the U.S. government keeps those stats or even knows. What he came up with, an admittedly conservative estimate, is mind boggling. Our "open borders" Senators and others don't want you to know about these things.

Read it and you may be shocked.

My car was totalled by a 70 year-old drunken woman who had three prior convictions on similar counts. The insurance policy on the car she was driving (her son's) specifically excluded her from coverage due to her record. She was white and presumably a U. S. citizen.

An attorney I know told me of a client who lived quite openly in Denver for five years, despite an outstanding arrest warrant for second-degree murder. When he was finally arrested on a minor traffic charge, he made bail. The cops simply refused to acknowledge the murder warrant.

What is a person "living in the country without permission but have no criminal record"? They are people who have broken federal immigration laws. They are illegal immigrants. They may or may not have a prior record. Fact, they are criminals who have not been caught.

I agree with the authors, the deportation of immigrants should be prioritized. It would be reasonable to start with felons, then repeat offenders, and so forth.

Therefore, all persons living in our country without meeting immigration laws are criminals. They should be subject to the laws and law enforcement of our land. Anything less would open up a Pandora's Box. Which laws do we enforce? Who is under the law? Who is above the law?

Final though. Has anyone noticed the Rocky's current propaganda twist this week as in their statement:

"a pattern in which the net designed to catch illegal immigrants allows many criminals to slip through the cracks"

Their point of course is to convience John Q. Public that ICE should not waste their time picking up the poor defenseless illegal alien ( disregard current immigration law ) and help their law enforcement buddies to go after the career criminal.

I am quite sure this weeks stories will be tugging at the heartstrings of readers to grab that tissue box about a cute little Mexican boy who is separated from its family because of an act by a cruel and inhuman ICE agent who deports his illegal sister who became deaf and dumb one night scared to death that an immigration agent was chasing after her. Stay tuned...

    A HARD WORKING AMERICAN!! writes:

Mr. Amigo, sorry to hear the broken record that keeps coming out of yours and Mr. Bush. The only reason the illegals are working are because of the selfish and money hungry people who hire you CHEAP!!. Its a shame that our government and Judges, of which our tax money pays for them to sit up on their thrones, have to actually take your feelings into consideration and not the Americans who's tax money pays for your free food stamps, section 8 housing, your free health insurance, your loans for houses and your vehicles. Its a shame that our politicians sit up on their thrones and are telling us to accept you people who are here illegally. The only intelligence you have is when your great Mr. Fox told you you could come here and live better then some of us Americans. This argrument could go on and on, but its people like Mr. Temple who enable you by printing a page in the Rocky Mountain News today in Spanish!! He is why you people stay. He enables you by doing this to make money, just like all the other people who hire illegals. The RMN raised their prices and now we are paying more and then he does this. what a slap in the face to us hard working Americans. Its funny how the RMN or the media in general doesnt have the courage to talk to the American people and ask what we eant. The government treats us like slot machines. We keep spitting the money out and they keep giving it to everyone but us. Thank-you Mr. Bush for the fine job your doing to kill America, It must be nice to be a criminal and be rewarded for it. To bad it isnt 2008. Remember to vote in Nov. and let the traitors of Washington know we are not going to put up with this. We need a leader who will actually do something for the people of the U.S.A. for once, and for the people who actually came here and did things the right way. Or is there a right way anymore!!!?

Being an immigrant to this country since 1979, I can understand the difficulties of my fellow immigrants. Though I am now a naturalized citizen, I cannot help but cringe every time an immigrant is discriminated.

At not fault of my own, I came to this county when I was a child. My parent where seeking a better future. My father, a farm worker and my mother a skilled seamstress managed to always work hard and buy a home for their family. My father was proud man who never asked for anything that he did not work for.

This perhaps is the story of many immigrants who come to the USA. They came here not by their choice and now this county is all they know.

Assimilation to other cultures is difficult, but I many immigrants do try and succeed learning to speak English.

The USA is a great country – the land of opportunity as seen by those coming here to find a better life. When basic needs in home country are not met, human nature is to look for better means.

If we should blame anyone, we should blame the Mexican government, President Fox, for failing its citizens. Mexico’s government must take responsibility for their failed attempts to create jobs stop its citizens from leaving.

Are we are country of heartless tyrants that demand illegal immigrants be sent back? The USA created by immigrants. This is a country of opportunity! We are all children of God and deserve a right to seek and demand a better life ourselves and our children.

I understand the rooted need to help those that cannot defend themselves and for that I applaud Peña (http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3873205) for his efforts and sneed to help. To see and hear people degrade any human being because of their skin color and background truly sad and a step back from humanity and civil rights gains.

Increase border security is having a positive effect at the border. Just today I read in the newspaper the decreased immigration due to the National Guard being present along the borders.

Yes, USA must protect its borders, but it does need to deal with the current populations of immigrants already rooted here. To ask that all immigrants be deported is as inhuman as wells as barbaric.

I am the child of immigrants as well. My parents had to move here to make a better life for themselves and their families. They waited in line and emigrated legally.

Mexicans who decry deportation on the one hand, and continue to support Mexico by way of US dollar remittances are hypocrites. All one needs to do is look at Mexico's illegal immigrant policies to see where true bararism lies.

I would rather that illegal immigrants say thank you to America, instead of calling us racist, immoral, inhuman and demaning rights they have not earned.

First, Illegal aliens are not immigrants, and immigrants are not illegal aliens. And if your parents decided that the laws of the United States and the will of the CITIZENS of the U.S. get in the way of them bettering there lives, then they are the ones who deserve the blame for the pain you and other illegal aliens recieve by application of the laws punishments, blame them and not the "barbaric" and "inhumane" laws of the U.S.

By your own words and your posting as a whole being an naturalized citizen(via amnestia '86) of the United States of America is a means of an end, and not a internal pride and belief structure that circumvents even skin color. You and others like you are exactly the reason deportation is necessary.

You are correct in one statement you made. Mexico and Vicente Fox are the problems, not Americans. And if applying the rule of law and the outcome of deportation in barbaric and inhumane, my barbaric name is ICE, and I'm here to deport some illegal alien ass. Let the deportations begin, and the re-instatement of are sovereignty shine all the way back to Mexico.

I'm puzzled about your description of an illegal alien woman as "on her way [sic] to becoming a legal resident." What on Earth does that mean? What process is she following? I'm not aware of any process, other than litigation, that would turn an illegal alien into a LEGAL resident without leaving the country and applying for lawful entry. She's in the same category as millions of illegals - basically filing suit through the immigration appeals process to get a judge to declare that the LAW does NOT apply to HER! Now, she's broken the LAW AGAIN by attempting to re-enter the US from Mexico. And you're saying she shouldn't be barred? What part of ILLEGAL do you fail to understand? If she's "in the process" let that "process" continue and if she magically becomes "legal" she can enter THEN.

I work for less than minimum wage! Good for me! If these mexicans are so superior why do most barely have an 8th grade education? Why do they not compete legally in the job market? Do we really want our great country turned into an extension of mexico? If mexico is so great, if being a mexican is so great, why are thousands from that country streaming into our country, taking what rightfully belongs to true Americans, legal Americans? It is not racist to be proud of our country, to want to defend it from those who clearly do not love this country and are hurting far more than helping. The only people who call true American patriots racist are those who are too ignorant to come up with a better argument.
