Basketbrawl: Fallout from Anthony, Smith suspensions - and Nuggets WIN

George Karl calls out Isiah Thomas. Carmelo Anthony's agent says the NBA is making an example of his client. Nuggets fans are frustrated.

The Nuggets are in disarray minus their two top scorers. Except that they came out like men possessed and beat the Washington Wizards last night, which prompted Dave Krieger to write that the undermanned squad has a chance to prove it can win as a team.

PREVIOUSLY:
Carmelo Anthony has drawn a 15-game suspension from the NBA for his role in Saturday night's brawl against the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden.

Nuggets guard J.R. Smith was suspended for 10 games for his role, as was Knicks guard Nate Robinson. Knicks guard Mardy Collins, whose hard foul on Smith instigated the incident, was suspended for six games. Knicks forwards Jared Jeffries was suspended for four games. Nuggets forward Nene and Knicks center Jerome James each were suspended one game for leaving the bench. Each franchise was fined $500,000 because of the altercation.

Anthony has apologized for his behavior. A portion of Anthony's statement:

I apologize to the fans, the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, my mother, and my family for the embarrassment I have caused them. I ask you all for your forgiveness.

I also want to make a personal apology to Mardy Collins and his family. My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation.

What makes this all the more painful is that this was one of the most important weeks of my life. I just realized one of my biggest dreams when we opened the Youth Center in Baltimore that bares my name. To see the community excited and hundreds of kids smiling was an incredible feeling. Now the thought of thousands of kids seeing this incident on TV pains me. This is not the example I want to set.

Salon's King Kaufmann says the real culprit in the brawl is childish whining about running up the score.

I'm surprised at the severity of the suspension. I figured 10 games max. Do you think it was fair? How big a jolt will it be to the Nuggets to lose the league's second-leading scorer for nearly 20 percent of the season? Do you think it will affect the Nuggets' ability to trade for Allen Iverson? What about J.R. Smith's 10-game suspension? Did the fact that Smith was provoked by a cheap foul mitigate his actions? Any credence to the Knicks' complaint that the Nuggets shouldn't have had their starters on the floor in the last couple of minutes of a blowout? Do you think the punishments would have been different if the fight had occured anywhere but in New York where the league is headquartered?

Don't you think the Nuggets need Allen Iverson to bring a little stability and maturity to the team?

I think 5 games is good he was wrong but being told by isiah that he should not go to the hole maybe he didn't take it that serious at the time until he saw what happen to not only his teammate but his best friend on the team J.R. Smith he reacted w/o thinking just like what most people do in that type of situation, it's not that serious it's just a throwback from back in the days like Miami/Knicks, Knicks/Bulls, Knicks/Suns and they need to stop comparing it to the Artest now that was serious but mostly everyone said they would have done the same thing it's not about pride or respect when someone does something dumb to you it's what it is a reaction that everyone has so stop trying to make it seem like this is going to destroy the NBA. It's not about a thug mentality no matter where you go low, middle, or high class it happens all over the world on a everyday basis. So how J.R. and how Melo acted was not dumb they just did not think of the circumstances. And last it does not matter if camby and melo was in the game u upset they are in the game so u send a nobody in the game to do something stupid and ignorant to someone now that dude will only be known for that in the NBA and that probably cuts his career even shorter than it was going to be. Now that's dumb instead of you just playing out the game collecting over 6 figures a year riding the bench and playing sometimes, you do something like that

Is Melo supposed to sit there while 3 knicks are on top of his boy J.R.? Collins was eyeing him the entire time and knew a punch was coming. Melo only backed away because he realized if he were to stay then the situation would've escalated even further. I blame Zeke, boohoo they are beating us too badly, boohoo. It's unfortunate that Carmelo deserves a suspension for striking

also suspends the New York player who committed the hard foul (which
prompted the brawl) for one calendar year, Melo's suspension should
    not exceed one game.
The league could do a lot to forestall future such events by acting
now and decisively to take "hard" fouls out of the game by issuing an
automatic and draconian suspension to any player who in the future
commits a 'hard foul' which upon review seems intended to intimidate
or to 'send a message' to any opposing player or team.
I for one had given up on pro basketball and until the Nuggets
enjoyed their recent resurgence had not invested my loyalty in any
team since Shaq dumped his fans in Orlando for the 'big time' in
L.A. If the league does not act here with brutal decisiveness I will
have no choice but to conclude that money alone drives the NBA. And
since their profits in no way benefit me, why then should I benefit
them by following the action? I will have to put them in the category
of pro base ball, which has continued without attracting my interest
since the owners and players both flushed a World Series with their
    greed.
Baseball cannot re-attract me without banning steroids through
independent weekly year-round testing of every player. Basketball

    eliminate 'basketbrawl' from the court.

This is just another reason why the NBA should only be televised on BET & MTV. These types of players & incidents have only trashed what was once a premiere sport in America. This is THUG Ball, nothing else.
As for Marh-Melo, what an embarrassment, throws a cheap shot sucker punch, then runs away, afraid to stand up for his behavior. Perhaps the NBA should shut down EACH Franchise for 15 games & force the organization to surrender salaries & profits to Charitable organizations. There is no place in Sports in America for this type of behavior. Severe fines for 3rd, 4th person , bench clearing escalations need to be addressed by each league with Franchise shutdowns, not the itsy bitsy slap on the hands that these spoiled, overpaid thugs now get.

All the players who are suspended should have to do 8 hours a day in a volunteer setting for the duration of their suspension (homeless shelter, learning hospital, etc.) to remind them where they would be if they were 6" shorter.

There is no news about the suspensions on the Nuggets team website. Congratulations to the Knicks for reporting the news on their team website. Apparently, professionalism and integrity of reporting is not a priority for the Nuggets franchise. This organization is a joke from the top down. I have been following the Nuggets and going to a lot of games since i could barley walk, and have supported them so much. I just purchased a game package last week after holding off at the beg. of the season because of frustration with the franchise. I have always wanted to give them a second chance in my heart. But now, I don't know what to do. No so much becasue of the brawl, but because the lack of credible reporting on the website and the attempt to just ignore the situation disgusts me. How disfunctional can we get? 351926

How will Carmelo apologize to the fans and the young basketball players in middle school, high school, and college? The Nuggets organization is sending a message to our youth that this type of behavior is OK, when in fact it is not!
All coaches should band together and offer the following zero-tolerance message, the Nuggets should be suspended from Television appearances for at least the rest of the season. All players involved should be removed from the NBA for one year. After all, think of what the consequences would be in middle school, high school, or NCAA athletics!
This was not just a brawl of a few guys in the NBA, it affects all basketball, at all levels.

NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL... it's all the same. I mentioned only the NBA as that was the focus of this particular thread. Hell... it's even invaded Little League. I remember a couple years ago that a player hit a home run in the Little League World Series and for the last 20 feet or so from Home plate, he did some sort of weird ape-like walk and mugged for the cameras. His coach jumped his ass afterward, but it was too late... the kid was already infected with the "look at me, I'm a badass M.F." syndrome he obviously picked up from watching professional sports.

The thug attitudes and one-upmanship antics should have been quashed from professional sports years ago, but it sells so it was allowed. I can't think of another business where the more tattoos you have, the more potty-mouthed you are and the farther you can remove yourself from seeming "professional", you actually make MORE money and and gain more fame.

The only pro sport I will pay to watch is middle-weight boxing. At the end of the day the athletes and owners could care less about their fans. It is tailored for the video game zombie, me-first, style over substance generation and I hope that marketing plan continues to backfire and slowly self destruct. There is no poise and sportsmanship left in that league, and the fundamentals of the game have been waning for years. But, I really do not think that fighting is so big a deal as to casue so much outrage. Look at the NHL, WWF, etc... it's all just overblown entertainment for fools anyway. Pro sports and pro players are no longer worthy of our time and money. Violence sells in America in every form of media. A coach leaving the starters in the game for so-called "garbage time" isn't unusual for any other team - I've seen the Lakers, the Sonics, and the Clippers do it to us in the last month or so - and that didn't make it "okay" for us to lasso tackle one of their top guys in a way that could have caused a severe injury. I see nowhere in your comment anything about Isaiah Thomas actually being caught on camera threatening Anthony.

As for comments of racism, there are about two or three on here from short-sighted dipshits that were brought up by ignorant parents who use racist terminology because they're just too stupid to understand that people are just people - you're going to have to get over it buddy, because you aren't going to change it - but you won't get by with making it sound like all the comments have a basis in racism.
