Broncos face painful reality

Injuries are part of the game in the NFL. As Jeff Legwold puts it today:

Crash the large and the swift together and there will be injuries. And while tough play, timely touchdowns and sure tackling always will lead the way, the simple perk of good health always is in the league's playoff mix.

After Cecil Sapp broke his left leg against the Seahawks, the Broncos have four starters and a key backup on injured reserve; three other starters have missed games because of nagging injuries. Coach Mike Shanahan says the team has to fight through its injuries but history shows that's easier said than done.

In Shanahan's tenure with the Broncos, the four seasons in which he had the fewest games lost to injuries to starters were 2005 (10), 1996 (13), 1998 (15) and 1997 (31).

That's two 13-3 seasons, a 12-4, a 14-2, two Super Bowl wins and an appearance in the AFC Championship Game. His worst injury season was 1999, when the Broncos compiled 67 games lost to injuries to starters and finished 6-10 - his only losing season as Broncos coach. Talent and health, hand in hand.

Note also, that was the season Terrell Davis effectively ended his career, as he was injured running down a Griesie-thrown interception.

Curious- I like Van Pelt. The guy could scramble and throw on the run. Since it took 6 months for another team to pick him up, maybe he just wasn't nfl material, I'm not there at practice to actually watch these guys perform and the same with all these other Monday morning q-backs. We are all on the other side of the glass looing in. I'm impressed with Cutler's arm. Looks like he can rifle it up the middle and thread needles for 30 yards and that just might be his claim to fame or his death with interceptions. I have more patience than the common Bronco fan, I grew up in Lions territory and they haven't done anything besides lose market share with Fo Mo Co.

BVP was picked up by the Texans and may be their starter soon. I think that means he is NFL material. Just think if we could have traded Jake, started Cutler, and kept BVP. I bet our team would be looking a lot better. Jake would have been worth a bunch before this season.

I was hoping the lay downs or Lions would have picked up BVP. I hope he does well.
