Gotta have Vista? Or happy to wait?
If you're one of those technoholics who just must be the first one to have whatever new product pops up on the computer marketplace, Tuesday is your day, reports Rocky Tech editor Darrell Proctor.
Vista, Microsoft's new operating system, will be on retailers shelves on Tuesday; some of the stores are staying open late tonight, ready to rack up Vista sales at the stroke of midnight and offering loss-leaders beginning a couple of hours before.
Reviewers says Vista looks better than previous versions of Windows, has better security, more parental controls, is more efficient at organizing files and multitasking. On the other hand, it's an absolute resource hog and runs best on new, high-performance PCs.
Experts tell Roger Fillion that most consumers don't need to be in a hurry to upgrade. That's my take too. If I"m doing fine with an earlier Windows version, what's the point? Expert users, please sound off.

Microsoft is so paranoid that someone might rip them off(guess they don`t make enough $$ as it is). The reason they came out with xp home & pro was because people like me who build their own computers can`t pirate a copy which you can do with windows 2000.
Even thou I don`t copy to sell computers, I just switch from one rebuild to another and they want me to buy new copys of windows everytime.
In my humbel opinion, this is not an upgrade, it is another way microsoft wants to control everything you do on the puter.
STAY AWAY!!!
In fact stay away from anything micrsoft has their name on!!

Why do I think Vista will be a POS? Every windows product has proven to be just that, a POS. Why is it, per Microsoft, the development team for Vista was made up of 1,100 programers and 10,000 attorneys? Why is that? Until Gates agrees to release the source code in full so programmers can write stable programs for windows, it will always be a POS. They only allow so much of the code or this interface that other software manufacturers have forever bitched about, and god forbid someone figures out the code, they sue them into oblivion never to be heard from again.

Well, Ive had no problems with xp. I built my computer a few years ago, and threw my free copy of 2k on it. Had problems with the nvidia video drivers, and couldnt figure out why. Tried XP on the off chance it was the os...yup. Worked fine with XP, and then seeing the differences, I just bought a copy on Ebay for $120. No biggie. Ive swapped parts and not had to re-activate or any of that, but realistically, the only thing you really swap once a putter is built is the video card. Might swap out HD's for higher capacity, but Ive never actually swapped the c drive, just added capacity. Might add a stick of ram or two, but again, doesn't affect your os.
Now, when you build a new putter, yea, need a new copy of the os (or atleast a valid activation key). The only real problem Ive seen with XP is people that buy pre-built putters that don't come with an XP disc. Ive seen so many people like that get frustrated because HP or IBM will only sell them recovery discs. They want to format and reinstall, and since they own the software, a hard copy doesnt seem to be an out of line demand. That, and being able to save $$$ is why I build my own and buy a copy of the os.
And I will get Vista for the next putter I build, here in a few months.
Losing your data is your fault, or hardware (and even with hardware, if you have alot of data and no backup, well, your fault). Not the os.
Ive had no problems with compatability issues in regards to windows. People seem to be able to write aps for it just fine, and as its by far the #1 os out there, that makes sense.
"The reason they came out with xp home & pro was because people like me who build their own computers can`t pirate a copy which you can do with windows 2000. "
No, its not. The reason they came up with xp is because its a better os. Thats typically how it happens. They make advances in hardware, have more processing power, and make software to utilize it.
What you are talking about is the reason they came up with the activation key. I didn't like it either, but I also understand its business. Ford wouldn't be ok with you copying your car if it was easy either.

I am a geek who has been in the IT industry since 1979 - and think that everyone who thinks anything out of MS is more than a POS is a fool (or believes that because they can point & click they understand computers). Monthly (at least) there are patches to fix the same security problems that existed in Windows 3. The end users are MS's alpha testers - and are foolish enough to pay for the privilege/frustration. Why do you think that both Europe & Asian countries are going with Linux? It isn't just the money (although that is significant) - it is the security. Try it - you might like it - and there are GUI interfaces for those of you who don't want to have to more than point & click - and you have a choice of browsers (everything EXCEPT IE - which is the biggest security problem for MS).

Why write decent code (read: efficient and optimized) when you can rely on the technology (read: cheap gigabytes of RAM, faster FSB's, powerful processors/graphics cards) to overcome the sloppiness and blottedness of the code?
On problem MS didn't count on is the cheapness, okay, thriftyness, of many computer users, who refuse to upgrade their machines. Sis-in-law is still happy running a Windows Me computer - pentium II at best.
What MS needs is another Y2K hysteria that causes industry to go on another computer buying binge.......
To answer the q? - I'm real happy with XP-Pro, and even though I have a free CD of Vista coming due to a recent laptop purchase, I won't be installing it any time soon.

JW,
I agree with all you said except the reason Microsoft wanted to upgrade windows 2000 to XP was because they were losing alot of revenue with people burning copys and building and selling puters.(you just could never register your copy and it would never be detected)
That is why they did the upgrade in the first place. I`m sure they wanted to improve on it as well, but the reason for going forward was to stop pirates.
This is also why they did the Y2K scare ,urging people to upgrade.
If you bought your computer at Dell or HP or ect, your system won`t even come with any of the install software, only recovery disks. So if you want to upgrade your HD for instance on a computer that you bought from Dell,
first off all your warrantys will be voided as soon as you open the computer( so you have to hire one of their specialists ).They will send you a new disk to install windows and whatever other installs that came with your certain system at time of purchase. There will be about 10 or so that you will have to install , you`d think they could send a new HD with windows and your purchase package pre-installed at the factory but this is not the case) but you will lose all files like e-addresses, picts, word docs, and that sort of thing.
SO MAKE BACK UP COPYS OF EVERYTHING WHEN YOUR MACHINE IS UP AND RUNNING GOOD.
If you loose your key code and still have your install disk on a computer that you built there is a way to find it, assuming that your computer is still up and running at this point because normally people don`t want to re-install windows unless something is going on.
For this reason , I recommend everyone get nortons "Go Back" and nortons "Ghost".

And BTW, all you punters, the reason Windows has all these pain-in-the-ass copy restrictions is because so many punks pirate the $h!t out of it. Even if all they can do is make it a bit harder to pirate, they'll do that when and where they can.
I know you'd all like to live in some utopian IT geek communist paradise where everything is free for the taking with no restrictions, but you live in a capitalist world so GET WITH IT

When I was younger, I always had to have the bleeding edge. Now my XP does all that I need for now, so I will wait at least for SP2 on Vista before I venture out there. XP was a pain in the neck till SP2. I backup the daylights on my comuters. I have two that I keep synced together for My Documents using Sync Toy
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649-CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en
which allows you to easily keep two folders in sync on two computers, or a backup drive. I backup onto a USB drive as well as using the contribute feature of Sync Toy, which will copy files from any folder onto a drive, do file renames, but never delete, so you can always recover accidently erased files.
If your hard drive crashes and you have not backed up, there is a service which I have used three times in the past to recover the files. For an XP drive, is costs. $379.

Linux is my OS of choice because it's free and works great. Redhat has distributions like Fedora 5 that are easy to install. Other distros come from Ubuntu, Suse, Mandrake, and Slackware. OpenOffice can read Microsoft Office files and convert them into more useful formats.
With Linux I can boot, logon, and be reading my email while the Windows machine that I use for .NET development and testing is still booting and thashing around. Then I have to wait for it to run a virus scan and thrash the harddrive some more after I logon.
I give Linux login accounts to my houseguests without worrying about them downloading and running nasty malware because Linux, like Unix, was built with security in mind from the get go.
So, I don't complain about Microsoft because I don't rely on any megalomaniacal huckster to provide the software I need to conduct business.

I used to use UNIX at work, but I just don't have time to administer Windows and something else. Maybe after I retire the second and final time. I used to write all my administrator scripts in KORN shell and run them under chron. Does Linux have those same sort of facilities?
