Your tax dollars at work
When Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Carlos Baldomir traded punches last year in Las Vegas, they floated like butterflies over a logo that may have been paid for by Colorado taxpayers.
Hysear Don Randell, currently housed in jail and facing multiple counts of theft of up to $10 million in state tax funds, paid to put the logo of his unknown Tru Dat Entertainment on the mat of the Mayweather/Baldomir fight, report Alan Gathright and Ann Imse.
In February, Randell joined a major fight promoter in sponsoring a star-studded boxing event at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. Featured, among others, was a hip-hop recording artist on Randell's own label, Tha Realest.An even more audacious attempt to stamp his logo on the richest prize fight in history was rejected.
"He was offering to pay a large amount of money for the sponsorships that he wanted" in the Mayweather-Oscar de la Hoya fight this month in Las Vegas, said Stephen Espinoza, an attorney for de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions in Los Angeles.
Espinoza refused to say just how much Randell was willing to pay to advertise an unknown corporate name with little business behind it.
Prosecutors say that Randell got rich from $10 million that he and his girlfriend stole from Colorado taxpayers. The girlfriend, former state tax supervisor Michelle Cawthra, allegedly funneled massive, bogus tax refunds to Randell's bank accounts.
