Fun while it lasted; Red Sox sweep Rockies from World Series

The Colorado Rockies' venture into the uncharted territory of the World Series ended Sunday night with the ship going over a waterfall in a 4-3 loss.
Boston is the world's champion of baseball. The Rockies' search for their first Fall Classic victory extends into next season.
The bats and pitching that carried them to dual sweeps in the playoffs left town during the eight-day layoff and never returned.
Tracy Ringolsby reports:
At 10:05 p.m., MDT, on Sunday night, the clock struck midnight on the Rockies Cinderella season.Rockies pinch-hitter Seth Smith struck out, bringing an end the Rockies World Series debut, a 4-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox in Game 4 allowing the Red Sox to complete a sweep in the most lopsided four-game World Series in history.
The Rockies made a final bid. Garrett Atkins unloaded a two-run home run off Hideki Okajima in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to one, but manager Terry Francona was able to turn to Jonathan Papelbon to get the final five outs, his third save in the World Series, all requiring him to get the final out in the eighth.
In the moments leading up to what turned into the final game of the season, the Rockies clung to the hope created by the season-ending surge that had sent them into the post-season.
Does the sweep take the luster off how they finished the season? Was the ticket fiasco a curse?

The Red Sox fans had a chance to see Clint Hurdle's stubbornness first hand, AGAIN going with weak right handed hitting Willie Taveras at lead-off and a right handed hitter (who has been lousy lately) at DH vs Curt Schilling. It should have been Matsui at lead-off, Tulo batting second and Seth Smith DH'ing. Move Taveras to batting ninth or have left handed hitting Corey Sullivan batting ninth and starting in center instead. Two games in Boston and the DH opportunity for the Rockies down the drain. If there were 200 games played in the World Series Hurdle would stay with Spilborghs at DH in the AL park even if it took him 199 games to get a hit, just so Clint could say, "look, there, he came through with a hit and I was right for putting him at DH".
Many in the national media are presenting Clint Hurdle as some type of great manager. Let me tell you as a long time Rockies fan since the beginning, he's average at best. His mismanagement of the pitching staff early in this season cost the Rockies at least 15+ games. The Rockies should have won the west going away. As the team made their miracle run run down the stretch it was in spite of Clint Hurdle.
Oh well, hopefully they can win at least two back here in Colorado.

I was pulling for the Rockies, it was such a feel good story, young kids, farm system, blue-collar ball making good.
And then Rockies management stepped in and ruined the rekindled love affair. First they decide to screw the local fans who supported the team through the years by selling the tickets to people from Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, with high-speed computers. Slap in this town's face, the town that pays taxes to that team and stadium. Raw deal to the fans.
Then they claim a hacker blew up their system, but don't even file charges or try to investigate and punish the perps. The press conference was given by a PR department guy who obviously had contempt for fans and locals for daring to question how they could screw up a system with 8 days of planning while the BoSox do it perfectly on 3 days notice.
I feel sorry for the guys on the team, they played hard to end the season and almost had this city eating out of their hands. Leave it to management to screw it up. I hope they lose their asses off and get swept now. Serves the owners right. And I hope Rockies fans say screw you to the owners next season and sell fewer tickets then they had hoped for. Jerks!

For all those ready to jump ship off the Rockies bandwagon, here are some encouraging facts.
Now that they play here for 3 games, several things help us out:
No designated hitter. So either Ortiz has to play first, or they lose his bat. Either way, that helps Rocks.
Our outfield is huge compared to Boston’s. So either they sit Ramirez (another great hitter) or we get to watch him try and cover a lot of field (not his bag of chips). That helps Rocks.
Mile high air. Their pitches will have less bite (and are more prone to leaving one hanging) and they may tire out more easily. Advantage Rockies.
Lastly, their pitchers have to hit, which they don’t regularly do in the AL. So they may get a little more tired out and have their rhythm messed up a bit by standing at the plate swinging like bugs bunny in front of millions. Advantage Rockies.
No matter what I won’t give up until the very last out, but for those needing a reason to keep clinging on, there are a few.
Go Rocks!

If this poster had stepped and read her own post, she would have instantly known the Rockies were sunk. Why? Because every reason for hope that she gave had to do with something OTHER than the Rockies' ability to beat the Sox.
When, instead of hitting, pitching, defense, or coaching, you have to point to rules, the stadium, or even (gadzooks!) altitude as your hopes for coming back from a 0-2 series deficit, you know it's all over.

That being said, this Red Sox team is one of the greatest baseball teams I've ever seen. I do not see even one single weakness on that team - everybody hits, everybody fields and the pitching is rock solid.

My, what an imaginative and penetrating argument you make. You might try actually contesting the point that I made.
Fans often point to non-play related factors to ease the pain of loss. When you and your beloved team have just been demoralized in three games straight by the Sox, it's hard to admit that you were simply outplayed by a better team. But enough about the Indians....
"Pedroia looks like a stud because he has incredible protection up and down the line-up. "
You may be unaware of this, but displaying a lack of baseball knowledge will actually UNDERCUT the strength of your argument on this board. Dismissing Pedroia's growth as a skilled and gifted hitter over the course of this year as merely the luck of his spot in the batting order is an astonishing display of ignorance. Furthermore, your selective failure to mention the two other low-payed high performers, Youkilis and Ellsbury, sounds like a dodge from the weakness of your contention that salaries are the difference-maker here.
"Oh, and I think I liked Red Sox fans better when they thought their team was cursed."
No, you liked the Red Sox fans better before their team broke your heart in the ALCS. That, sir, is just too bad.

The Red Sox have so much pitching, and so much depth. They have smart people running the team. It's not just the big payroll. Pedroia, Ellsbury, Matsuzaka and Okajima - all rookies! Even Kielty, the spare part, hit a home run. Congrats to the Red Sox and their fans, probably the best in baseball. Your team pitched great (as a longtime Rockies fan I knew Dice-K and Lester would be very tough on the Rockies as they always hit poorly against pitchers they haven't faced before), you hit the ball when it counted most and played excellent D all series. You all deserve it.
Big advantage, you have Francona and we are stuck with Hurdle.
If LaTroy "Blown Save" Hawkins, Jeremy Affeldt or Brian Fuentes make this team in 2008 then we are in for another year where it will take a miracle like the single off the bat of Tony Gwynn Jr. against the Padres to get the Rockies into the post season. If these any of these three relief pitchers are back we'll have to endure another long season of the pitching staff mismanagement by Clint Hurdle.
With RHP 2007 first round draft choice Casey Weathers, RHP first round draft choice Greg Reynolds (of Stanford) and RHP Juan Morillo on the horizon there is an excellent chance that the pitching staff will be so good that it will not matter what Hurdle does in 2008.
I like the starting rotation of Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis, Ubaldo Jimenez, Franklin Morales and Greg Reynolds. Add Juan Morillo and Casey Weathers to the bullpen and you have a pitching staff than can lead the Rockies to a 100 win season, EASY for the next few years and into the post season with no problema.

And Rocky Mountain News, get some damn reporters who will ask Clint Hurdle tough questions instead of trying to shield him from any criticism of his mismanagement of the pitching staff all year long. Hurdle threw away 20+ games during the season by using players who failed over, over, over and over in the same role. Reference games where "Blown Save" Hawkins pitched. Tracy Ringolsby must get a nice kickback from the Rockies. He doesn't have a reporter's bone in his body. He's a shill for whatever the Rockies management says or whatever Clint Hurdles puts out there.

Hell no getting swept by the Sox doesn't diminish what the Rox did.
The Sox were expected to be here beginning last year when they signed Dice-K and Okejima. And they fulfilled that expectation... so congrats to them. Quite frankly, Rockies pitching was rusty in game 1, and at any rate Josh Beckett is a sure win for the Sox in the postseason, the Schilling of yesteryear showed up for game 2, and Dice-K pitched much better at Coors that I thought he would. They are on paper (and in four successive games) the better team. When they're not playing the Rockies (I never in a million years imagined this World Series matchup) I root for the Sox, and although it pains me to admit it as a Native Coloradan living in Cambridge and a Rockies fan since they're inception and in this Series, but it's just true.
However, what the Rockies did to get to the World Series was simply amazing. They seemingly willed their way all the way to the Series with a lineup that wasn't even expected to finish above the NL West cellar. And given that the NLCS is a long series, they proved they're no fluke.
They have nothing to be ashamed of, nor do Rockies fans. Old school Sox fans will tell you as much (it's only the newest arrivals on the bandwagon that are annoying).... I can tell you that with the Rockies streak entering the playoffs a LOT of people deep in Red Sox Nation were very wary to face a team like the Rockies with all the momentum they had.
Nevertheless, Spring training is only four months away and Rockies fans need to get on O'Dowd to shore up the franchise. They need consistency in the 3, 4 and 5 spots in the rotation, must keep Tulo, Matt Holiday, Garrett Atkins, and Kaz Matsiu, and need to ensure that Todd Helton will remain a Rockie for the remainder of his career. They could use a speedy right fielder that hits well from both sides of the plate.
I'm very happy and proud with the Rockies season, and Rockies fans back home can console themselves in the fact that they live in the greatest state in the union.

You of all people should understand what if feels like to have a team that you love dearly get their butts kicked in front of the whole country. We may not have anywhere near the baseball "tradition" that you have, but we're trying damnit.
To all the Rockies "fans" who were grumbling about everything under the sun and were predicting things like a sweep (among other things), you piss me off almost as much. Grow a brain, get off the bandwagon, and stay off.
To the Boston Red Sox team and the MAJORITY of their fans, congratulations! You deserve it. There's nothing wrong with spending a lot of money to put together a good team (or rather to fill in a few missing pieces) and then proceeding to play like, and become, world champs. I hate to say "the better team won", but, the better team won. Your team was awesome...
Finally, to the Rockies: thank you, thank you, thank you! I am crushed, especially after getting swept. Regardless of the way things turned out (any of you previously mentioned monkeys remember having to watch the Broncos lose FOUR Super Bowls?!?) it was an incredible ride, and I can't believe that I was able to say "Rockies" and "World Series" in the same sentence. Your organization is still young, comparatively speaking; your future looks bright. Us Red Sox fans, we are starved for the success that has been ever so elusive. Well, At least the Rocks got there. Seriously, who thought they had a chance to make
the World Series in our lifetime?
A couple of observations from the Series.
1.) FUENTES SUCKS! He blew our chances in game 3 and 4 when we were making our rally. Both games he gave up costly runs late in the game. He has no one to blame but himself. The rest of our bullpen pitched great.
2.) Holliday had a decent Series. He is not the NL MVP because MVP's do not get caught at first with an average pick off move. MVP's also make plays on defense. He had an opportunity in Game 2, 3 and 4 to charge a fly ball hard with no one on base. He chooses to hold up and take the ball on a hop, ensuring a base runner. MVP's make something happen. They were all catchable with a nice dive.
3.) Hurdle forgot how to manage aggressively and take calculated risks. The Rocks did not win 21 out of 22 by playing conservative baseball.
4.) The Red Sox are a damn good team. We played them hard, but could not beat them.
5.) Congratulations to the Coors Field Staff for confiscating and removing the bone heads who put a Mexican Flag on display. There were a few Vets I attending last night's game with that were about ready to go 'Nam on their asses.

We simply got beat by a better team.
Pitching - Francis freaked out being in the big game and wasn't pulled soon enough. Jiminez pitched well and didn't get much help from the offense. Fogg didn't have his stuff and was left in at least two batters too long. Cookie pitched damned well and got little offensive help. And of course, having our actual starting rotation might have helped. The Sox starters did a great job.
Defense - As pointed out, outfielders made some poor plays, period. Hawpe allowed 3 runs to score in game 3, right in front of me in section 106, by muffing an easy catch. Holliday should have charged a few flys that went to him.
Hitting - the homers we hit looked great, but that was a big part of the problem. The Sox hit their batters around with shots into the gaps or down the lines. We kept trying to pound it out of the park. The team playing fundamentals won the games.
Relief pitching - Herges shut the Sox down when he pitched, yet we pulled him for Fuentes - go figure. I understand the idea is to put in pinch-hitters to try and generate runs, and the pitcher becomes the most likely one to swap out - but when you see time and again that taking out the hot pitcher, and the one who goes in allows 3, 4, or 5 runs, you just keep losing ground that the pinch-hitter didn't make any gains on anyway.
Despite all that, it was a fun ride Rockies, and we look forward to next year. Thanks!

To get swept by a team like that is a clear illustration of how much work the Rockies need to do in the off season to shore themselves up for another run.

I can't believe some of the comments I am reading. Who was a better NL team? Several teams might be in the mix, but the Rockies beat them all when it mattered. In addition, they had an amazing run....not just in September, but from May 15 to October 15, hardly a fluke at all!
Boston started on their roll during game 5 of the ALCS and HAMMERED the Indians, a good team too, even worse than the Rockies. They got hot at the right time and their experience really showed. In addition, I think we can all agree that the Rox record layoff did not help at all.
Go ahead and hammer Hurdle, Fuentes, and Hawpe. The same people doing that are the same fans who hammered John Elway after EVERY Super Bowl loss. Remember, you were also the ones who wanted him traded because you thought he was a loser. Kindly, I think all of you who are nit-picking the Rockies are the real losers here. OK Tom, feel better? I don't think people here (except maybe one) are "hammering" the Rockies, or are fare-weathered fans - I think we saw some things that bear pointing out as potential problem areas - and those can be improved upon or fixed.
I mean, Fuentes DID pitch poorly and gave up runs. Hawpe DID muff a catch he should have made. Holliday DID take several outfield hits off the bounce when with some effort he COULD have made the out.
We're not trying to say the Rockies didn't do a great thing - they did. The Sox bought a team to win in 2004, and they did roughly the same thing this year - let's see them keep to our budget and get the same results - won't happen. O'Dowd, Hurdle, and the rest of the coaches and players did a great job, and the future looks very, very bright. But they have a ways to go, and that's not "hammering" anybody.

The adage that good pitching trumps good hitting was proven to perfection in this series. Remember in the 80's when the Broncos were studs of the AFC but got humiliated in three super bowls? The NFC was that much better then. The tide may turn in baseball. A salary cap would be nice. To many of the high salary teams keep getting in the playoffs. B-O-R-I-N-G. (3)Lose the hankies, they look like surrender flags, and they do not show any passion. Noise is much more powerful than laundry.
(4)Make sure the Rockies have sellouts next year from the April to September, and tell ownership you will not settle for anything less than postseason every year. Ownerships need to want champions as much or more than fans do, that is not the case in Colorado. You have to love this team more than you love the Broncos.
(5)The opposition's fans will always be "annoying" "classless" when you are getting your head handed to you...there is a way to make them objects of pity rather than annoyance...win ! Then it will be your turn to be classless and annoying in the eyes of others.
