Is Ken Salazar in the mix for Obama's VP?

Thursday, May 8 at 8:23 AM

salazarvprtl.jpg

The road to the Democratic presidential nomination culminates in Denver. Could the vice presidential nomination also run through Colorado?

With the prospects of the "dream team" slate of Obama and Hillary Clinton fading, Salon lists Sen. Ken Salazar as one of 15 potential running mates for prohibitive favorite Barack Obama.

Among the others: Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia, Gen. Wesley Clark, Govs. Janet Sebelius of Kansas, Bill Richardson of New Mexico, Brian Schweitzer of Montana and Ted Strickland of Ohio and even Colin Powell.

Fred Barnes says Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who supported Clinton, would be a savvy choice.

Gerry Vazquez, who writes American Taino, political commentary from the American Latino perspective, laid out the case for Salazar as vice president.

1) His family has deep roots in the region and he comes from a family that knows how to win there. 2) Salazar is a fresher face than Richardson and has less baggage. 3) Colorado is electorally more important than Richardson's New Mexico. 4) Salazar is a former state attorney general. 4) Salazar has proven that he can appeal to Latins and nonLatinos alike; whereas Richardson has only won in a small heavily Latino state.

Do you think Salazar will get/deserves to get serious VP consideration? Would Obama be more likely to choose a governor? Someone with high-profile military experience? Does the vice president matter in your choice for president?

Craig Crawford has a fun "tournament" for picking John McCain's running mate.

Gerald Pomper, who has written seven books on presidential elections, makes the case for Webb.

Webb fits Obama's true needs. The Illinois Senator's greatest deficiency is his lack of experience in foreign policy and military security. Clinton has made that her chief point of attack -- as in the now-classic "3 A.M. telephone" ad -- and this area is obviously McCain's greatest strength. There is no way for Obama to match McCain, even if he could manufacture some "sniper fire," but the right running mate could give him a measure of credibility, in much the same way as Cheney helped Bush.

Webb is a former Navy officer and Vietnam veteran (exactly matching McCain), and a former Secretary of the Navy bringing directly relevant executive experience. He won four military medals in Vietnam, and was wounded twice, a record that, along with awards from the American Legion and VFW, would repel attacks by SwiftBoaters. His term at the Pentagon came under Ronald Reagan, when Webb was a Republican, an advantage in Obama's effort to achieve a new electoral coalition. With this military background, he reinforces the Democrats' case against the Iraqi intervention, a position he has articulated from the beginning of the war and with particular force, including a direct confrontation with President Bush at a White House reception. As a novelist, non-fiction author and Emmy-winning television reporter, he also shows intellectual distinction.

Webb also would bring specific political advantages to the Democratic ticket. His rural roots, vigorous language and championing of working class values would compensate for Obama's evident weaknesses among these voters. Webb provides a populist platform on corporate regulation, trade, taxation and health care that would further extend the party's appeal to its lower-income base. Born in Missouri, educated in Nebraska, California and the Naval Academy in Maryland, he encapsulates a national electoral appeal. Finally, to the limited extent that state residence matters, he would help to switch Virginia into the Democratic column for the first election since 1964.

READER COMMENTS

I like McCaskill but I don't see it. Not enough experience on that ticket. If not Hillary then I would like to see Wesley Clark on the ticket. Maybe Jim Webb.

Vice President names like Charlie Rose, Micheal Bloomberg, or Ted Turner come to mind. But they would not likely run. So you have another knowledgeable person in Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

I started a Draft Claire for Governor in which we had over 75 team captains statewide in 2003. She instead became a US Senator two years later. Claire McCaskill was a prosecutor in Kansas City, a single mom while serving as state representative for 3 terms and then a State Auditor. Her knowledge of local, state, and Federal levels of governments and how they work is extremely important. There has likely never been a vice presidential candidate which such a record of service.

She has become known as a center of the road legislator fighting for anti ear mark legislation and an accountability office for expenditures on the war. What she is most noticed for is that she has a pulse of the people that comes naturally and speaks out for the people when something is not in their best interest concerning government or important issues. Yes two inspiring candidates who bring out the best in people on the ticket sound real good.

gr8-. Supply and demand of gas firstly duh. Tires cost less, Roads in better shape = less petroleum wasted to fix them, cops spending less on gas chasing illegals. Less demands on infrastructure that uses petroleum, less demand on enviromental measures. Less people = lower prices. Is it really that hard?

Democrats are sellout of American citizens in regards to illegal immigration pandering.

Posted by Observer on May 12, 2008 1:57 PM

Speaking of illegals, here is another person really showing her brains. Notice how she underlines the word she can't spell.

Shaggy - I don't normally weigh in too heavily on the illegal immigration issue, but I would be interested in the connection between gas prices and deporting illegals. I don't see it personally, but would welcome your theory.

This just in BO takes Clinton in superdelagate lead.

You can post what ever you want jay, just back it up for once.

Posted by Shaggy on May 9, 2008 5:38 PM

shaggy, would you mind if i posted a link to the conversation we had about gas prices last week? it covers the supply and demand issues, the inflation issue, the devaluation of the dollar, the instability in the middle east, etc.

you seem to be covering some of the same ground that has already been settled and plowed.

if i did, would you read it and then ask question about anything of which you didn't understand?

Posted by jay on May 9, 2008 3:17 PM

you know Shaggy hindsight is 20/20 and very few people now think the war was a good idea. Now the trick is trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. I don't know that gas prices will ever be where they were before the war. I am just appalled at the lack of accountability. But to answer your question, no I don't think that gas prices would go down if we brought the troops home. I don't want to sound like a know-it-all but I never thought the war was a good idea. Didn't believe the WMD stories, didn't think there an imminent threat. One of my biggest beefs about Hillary is that she voted for the war. I think it was a political move on her part but she really showed a lack of judgement. Again with the hindsight, I bet she regrets that vote more than any other.

Posted by just sayin' on May 9, 2008 2:54 PM

I would be willing to bet if we deported all the illegals gas prices would drop more than if we ended the war prematurely.

Another issue held up because of Democrats.

Posted by Shaggy on May 9, 2008 2:47 PM

btw Just and jay,
If we were to end the war today..bring all our troops home.

Do you think gas prices would go down to pre-war status?

Posted by Shaggy on May 9, 2008 2:42 PM

"what dem policy decisions caused these gas prices to spike, shaggy?"--jay

Lets take this one step at a time for the cheap seats.

Do you realize that IF we had a steady flow of Oil going to rebuilt or new refineries in America thus not buying as much foreign oil that Oil prices would drop drastically?

Do you know who is holding up the process of drilling and building new refineries?

Hit em straight Just,if that doesn't happen at least hit them to the right and avoid the left:)

Thanks for the input on Rhodes. I'll have to check it out and see. Have a great weekend.

Posted by DR on May 9, 2008 2:09 PM

Shaggy, jay have a good weekend. I don't agree with you very often Shaggy but I like that you are civil. I can't pretend to understand why gas prices have ballooned but I feel like it has to have something to do with the war. Playin' a little G tomorrow, hope it's nice. Mothers Day is out.

Posted by just sayin' on May 9, 2008 2:08 PM

what dem policy decisions caused these gas prices to spike, shaggy?

do oil companies manipulate gas prices?

Posted by jay on May 9, 2008 1:50 PM

jay,
Do you think an 8% profit is too much for a Company?
As a business owner, I can tell you this is not a large mark up.
That is what the profit margin for the oil companies is and if the Governement taps into it they will have to raise their margin to turn a profit thus making us pay for it at the pump.
In other words, if Hillary or Obama punish the oil companies, they will in turn punish us. It would amount to another tax increase on us.
Got it now?

Posted by Shaggy on May 9, 2008 1:39 PM

fair enough Shaggy, what some may consider to be caustic someone else might call entertainment. For the record, I can't stand Rush or Randi Rhodes. What about Sasq position that if Obama is elected we will have higher oil prices but Bush is not to blame for the higher oil prices we now have? Just when is it appropriate to blame the President? I guess only when he is in the other party. Sasq isn't sayin'

Posted by just sayin' on May 9, 2008 1:07 PM

General Wesley Clark is far and away the best running mate option for Obama. Not only would Clark help to combat McCain's perceived military advantage, but he would also help shore up Obama's (falsely) perceived patriotism issues and furthermore, if Hilary would "let him do it" it would also be an olive branch of the Clinton camp since Clark is a prominent Clinton supporter. Clark hits on all the main things that Obama needs.

Obama/Clark 08!!!!!

the blame the dems for republican mistake drumbeat continues:

"the major gas price increases happened in the last two years...not when Bush was elected and not when the war started"

what dem policy decisions caused these gas prices to spike, shaggy?

"The oil companies will just raise the prices to compensate and we will be stuck with even higher gas prices."

wait a minute...i thought oil companies didn't set gas prices. do they?

Posted by jay on May 9, 2008 12:13 PM

yeah, this is going to be an interesting election season in the south. i imagine that some of the obstructionist tactics used in florida and ohio will pale in comparison with the well resourced and well planned operations that will take place throughout the country this year.

i think once again we'll see HUGE issues with electronic voting systems. there was a huge surge in voter regristrations, so i expect those lists to be vetted thoroughly as well.

going to be an interesting year, but i don't think we'll see the type of event at the DNC for which the far right has been hoping. i think the dems will wrap up the nomination process by mid june at the latest and move forward with a great convention. extremist groups more interested in getting press than in actually peacefully protesting for change will be increasing marginalized in the upcoming months.

watch mccain to increasingly insist that while "flipflopping" was a sin in 2004, it will be "being flexible" this year. he's going to get hammered on his bushesque policy stances and i don't think he'll be able to keep from waffling on yet more issues.

and of course the terror alerts. this could be a big year for some new Fear.

Posted by jay on May 9, 2008 12:10 PM

Just,
Actually Rush is an entertainer, a very successful one with a very large audience. He happens to be very intelligent as well. I am sure those on the left would differ with me but they differ on many truths.

That said, the major gas price increases happened in the last two years...not when Bush was elected and not when the war started.

Obama and Hillary think that cutting tax breaks to oil companies and making them pay back profits will solve the price of gas. This is just stupid as hell...The oil companies will just raise the prices to compensate and we will be stuck with even higher gas prices.
The way to lower gas prices is to lower the demand and increase the supply.
The problem we have with this is that the Environmental nut jobs and the Democrats won't let the oil companies do what they do best and that is drill for oil and refine it into gasoline.
We haven't built a refinery in 30 years.
If we still continue not to drill our own oil and Iran controls the middle east oil if the Democrats get their way and cut and run, the prices will probably double from where they are right now.

If you want to blame someone blame the Democrats not Bush.

Posted by Shaggy on May 9, 2008 11:52 AM

I would say Randi Rhodes but not Al Franken. Franken is very brilliant and talented. Harvard graduate and an original writer for SNL. Also he is running for Senator from Minnesota. Rhodes on the other hand is just as vitriolic as Rush. What's weird is that they hate each other and they are virtually the same as each other.

"edwards for vp? my republican buddies believe he can't carry enough of the south to make him the choice...but i don't really think the south is going to be a problem this time around." - jay

Actually I agree with you jay. But look at it from a different angle. Now that Obama is basically the nominee, the sounth is in the bag. For years the black vote in the south has been oppressed and marginalized. But there are huge black populations down south. I think last I saw, Mississippi was 47% black for example. Think these people wont be energized for the opportunity to elect the first black president?

Just like the evangicals came out in full force for Chimpy McFlightsuit in 2004, because he was presented as "one of them", I truly believe you will see record turnout for African Americans in this election cycle voting for Obama. This will be a major advantage in the south and should outnumber the "redneck" vote easily... that and the fact that the conservative evangicals aren't getting in line behind John McMore-war...

Truthfully, I don't think the country will be divided up along lines this year anyway. The GOP policies have screwed us ALL, in every corner of this country... and all the "swift-boat" tactics sure to come from the GOP and their "dittoheads" wont hide that fact!

Speaking of Rush, I was wondering, is there anyone on the liberal side of the aisle who is Rush's equivalent? I've only heard brief snippets of a couple of Rush's shows and even though I'm a conservative, I can't say I've ever thought of him as more than a mouthpiece that tries to stir up trouble with provocative and rabble-rouser type comments. In fact, most of the people I know that listen to him are liberals - no kidding - of course that's like three people, but I always wondered why they would listen to him.

Does he really speak for conservatives in general, and Republicans specifically? I think he's more of a conservative type, with a "get rich" agenda and so he doesn't care what he says or who he angers in the process as long as it generates turmoil and keeps his name in lights, the money keeps rolling in. Does he really do any good for anyone?

I'm not picking on anyone here, I honestly don't know where the guy is coming from or if he makes any sort of valuable contribution to humanity at all.

Posted by just sayin' on May 9, 2008 8:44 AM

Shaggy, how is it that Sasquatch can take the position that Obama would be responsible for a serious increase in the price of oil but when I point out how high oil prices have gone up since Bush was elected that suddenly it's crazy to think that the President would have anything to do with it? Is it only a Democratic President that would be responsible? Don't you believe starting a bogus war has something to do with the price of oil? Just trying to understand the lack of logic here.

Nope, they better wear those catchers masks about 12-inches below their belly buttons and sleep face-down (that could be risky too) in order to deflect all the Arkansas curved balls, split-fingers, screwballs, knuckle balls and Arkansas sliders! Michelle would be placed on the the injured reserve no later than January 21, 2009, unable to walk.

No way Obama will let Bill near his little unproud bitter wife.

Posted by on May 8, 2008 2:48 PM

Is there a BO/HRC ticket in the making?

Not a chance. BO certainly would not want to caddy for Bill for 4 years at Bill's Golf Club. And if Hillary couldn't control Bill for 35 years, then would Michelle be any more successful controlling Bill during the next 4 years?

Naaaagh! That picture simply doesn't look right. Get over it libdems...we have just entered the post-Clinton era!

Posted by SASQUATCH on May 8, 2008 2:30 PM

RUMOR...Hillary just approched Obama with a $6.5 million bailout request needed to kill her last loan to her own campaign in exchange for her surrender and exit. Will BO bite, he has more money than the Federal Reserve? Or will BO just bite Hillary and tell her to take a hike?

As the World Turns.

Bigfoot's typical nonsense not withstanding...

Looks like I was right and Clinton is in talks with Obama's peps as we speak... I can only hope this is true. Obama/Clinton would not only be unbeatable in the general election, it woudl be exactly what America needs at this point!

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

Now that Barack Obama appears on the verge of becoming the Democratic nominee, the buzz about a so-called "dream team" is starting up again.

ABC's George Stephanopoulos says that there are "intermediaries" discussing the possibility of an Obama-Clinton ticket. And he thinks Clinton "would be under some pressure and would like to accept." Former congressman Harold Ford also says an Obama-Clinton ticket is something the Democratic Party is going to have to seriously consider in the next few weeks.

There's even a group called "Vote Both” that's trying to push for such a ticket. It's seen as a way to unite the party after an often bitter campaign.

What a way to end it all...Denver's Civic Center is turned into Omaha Beach and looks like the first 20-minuutes of "Saving Pvt. Ryan"...Charlton Heston rides a charriot right down the 16th St. Mall--what a Cecil B. DeMille Big-Bang FINI!

Is there life after Clinton? You bet there is!

JMH, You are dreaming if you think Hillary will play second fiddle to anyone.
I have a feeling she has a big surprise coming for Obama the way she said she would back whoever the nominee is knowing damn well she can't get it unless another Rev. Wright fiasco gets dropped on Obamas head. She even gave her campaign another 6 mill.
Why in the hell would she do this knowing she doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning?
I think the Clintons are up to something.
Hillary would have no say so what-so-ever as a VP.
Besides Obama won't ask her...these two are not friendly to each other.

Hit the nail on the head with that post Love & Darkness!

Good post and not a thing that isn't 100% true.

... as far as a running mate, I really think it will be Hillary. I think they are negotiating right now before Hillary drops out. I think Hillary (and Bill) will be a powerful behind the scenes VP, in the mold of Dick Cheney, without the sick, homicidal tendacies.

While this may worry some, I think it would be more of a real "team". Unlike the Bush/Cheney team who is really Dick Cheney running the show and everyone else telling Bush he is in charge (wink, wink).

I think Obama will been shown as the uniter and above politics while working on domestic issues, while Clinton will be the "attack dog" and will handle foriegn policy and the "right-wing attack machine".

Just my guess though. I am with you jay, though... I do think Richardson would be a GREAT choice as well. His foriegn policy credentials are immpecable and being latino would basically ensure every "minority" comes out in full force for this ticket along with the majority of Americans who are fed up with the incompitance, arrogance and corruption of these last 8 years!

But I just got a feeling Hillary will be the choice... no way she walks away from the opportunity of going down in history of being the FIRST woman VP if she can't be the first woman president and her presence would shore up the "white, middle class" vote since every middle class American (who isn't brainwashed by Rush Limp-bone) is just screaming for the Clnton years again after this "BUSH nightmare" that is almost over!

If the “Reagan Republicans” had NOT crushed the anti-Big Oil proposals in the 80s, which started under President Carter, we would have weaned ourselves off Foreign Oil LITERALLY decades ago.

Hybrid vehicles could have been developed by American carmakers 20 years ago- had the government mandated or encouraged it.

Instead, the Rightys put an end to all that “environmental wacko garbage” in order to protect themselves (since they are major Big Oil shareholders).

And, their strategy was BRILLIANT. Look where it got them. They are all billonaires now.

It’s disgusting to listen to today’s pathetic Bleats of the Right “oh if those Dems would let us drill more oil we’d not be dependent on Foreigners” – it’s typical of the short-sighted and short-memoried Right to spew such brain-locked ignorance.

The majority of oil's price increase took place over the past 2 years (the last few weeks have been totally stunning) with the anti-drilling, anti-oil, anti-coal, anti-natural gas, anti-nuclear, anti-refinery dems in contol of both houses. And your boy Salazar and his bro have been behind much of this anti...they prefer windmills!

I don't think it'll be Hillary, unless that's the deal she strikes in order to drop out. Otherwise, Edwards is a good bet. I think Richardson would have been great, but I believe he's on record as saying he doesn't want it, isn't he?

Uh just to be clear Sasq, when Bush was elected oil was $32 a barrel. Now it is $120. And you are concerned what a Democratic ticket would do to the price of oil?? Whew you are a little deranged.

Yea Obama..Pick Salazar..snicker snicker...I think it would be a winning ticket..snicker snicker.

I wonder if this open borders amnesty do nothing Senator is going to write a letter to the Democrats in Florida who are threating to riot in Denver like he did KOA to reprimand Rush?
What a little partisan weasel.
What is really hilarious about him is he thinks he looks good in that oversized cowboy hat..hehehe
He has no clue we are all laughing at him.

Of course he will vote for Obama, he is off the scales left just like Obama is.

WHAT A TEAM THAT WOULD BE.

You can stuff their combined experience into a 3-minute egg timer, look at $200/300 crude and $10 at the pump, go to D.C. for your health-care, get taxed on your taxes and kiss your wallet good bye, see a windmill on every street corner and watch American free market capitalism get flushed down the mahoola while saluting Karl Marx.

Then in their year number two...

Salazar and Richardson are retards. Obama will choose Edwards to garner support from the south.

I really think that Hillary is going to be the VP candidate.

i think webb would be an excellent vp. he has tons of successful experience (the kind eisenhower had) and isn't a beltway special. he'd be able to talk very credibly about defense policy. it would be hard to make the case that he wouldn't have the best interests of our security and military at heart...priorities that have been absent for far too long.

Jim Webb is only a 2-year Senator like Obama, so I don't think he'd pad the "experience gap" enough.

Likewise, has Salazar done anything noteworthy on the national stage in his 4 years in DC? I can't think of anything off the top of my head. His support for Alberto Gonzales can't please many Obama supporters.

my guess is no. unfortunately, with race being an issue in this election season, we'll see obama pick the standard white guy instead of a very qualified latino like bill richardson. my guess is that the heavy vp negotiations have already begun and will be announced fairly shortly by obama in order to put even more pressure on hillary to join the cause and start the campaign against mcsame.

hmmmm...richardson/obama 2008...what a nice dream
