McCain poised to announce VP pick this week?
The John McCain veepstakes moved from slow boil to frenzy among political types, fueled by a report by Bob Novak that the presumptive GOP nominee would pick his running mate while Barack Obama was in the middle of an exhaustively-covered international tour.
The Politico's Jonathan Martin says the window on an announcement is closing.
The Olympics begin August 8th and run until the 24th. To ensure maximum news coverage of their pick, neither campaign wants to go public with their decision during the international spectacle. And immediately after, the Democrats begin their convention. McCain, of course, does not want to make his pick during this period, either. The most frequently mentioned name for McCain in recent weeks has been Mitt Romney. Despite their heated primary, the two have seemed to become more comfortable with one another. McCain has showered Romney and his family with praise in recent weeks and also subjected his old rival to some mild teasing of the sort that suggests more affection than antipathy. In turn, the former Massachusetts governor has become a fixture on TV news shows, seeming to try out for the number two gig and promoting the man he once derided as insufficiently conservative to effectively contrast with the Democrats.
McCain is very chummy with South Dakota Sen. John Thune, of whom he has said on the campaign trail, "If I looked like John Thune I'd be President of the United States now."
I still think Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is a more likely choice.
Who should McCain pick? Think he'll do it this week? Will his running mate choice have any bearing on your vote?

He'd better not pick LA governor Bobby Jindal, one of the few promising GOPers who really needs to clean up his home state and get more experience before he heads to the national stage.

Looking at the names in the article, several thoughts cross my mind, how does the VP compliment Sen. McCain? Mitt Romney presented himself very well during the GOP contest and would match well with McCain. I like Sen. Thune for his 'western' outlook, but I'd need to investigate his credentials further.
Oh yeah, I'm one of those types who places my vote to the candidate I feel can do the best in the position. I'm not party bound, I think I'm too smart for that.
Bottom line for either (any) VP choice, can they fill the shoes should, God forbid, they become empty?

I see Obama added a 3-4 paragraph disclaimer on his website regarding his "plan" for immediate withdrawal from Iraq. All of a sudden now he includes umpteen reasons for why he may not be able fulfil this particular campaign promise.
He placed it right above where it used to just say "I will begin immediate withdrawal..."
It's good to see Obama his true to his word when it comes to change, but at this rate, Obama himself might need to apply for the VP job with McCain.

Are you comparing him to Rummy and the gang, we'll be in Iraq 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months tops.
Of course you can't make an immediate withdrawal. We've got golf courses and Haliburton employees to protect.

My Fellow Americans -
After much thought, much ponderance, and much prayer, I have come to decide my running mate. He's a man of great intellect. Someone who the entire nation can feel comfortable with in the Oval Office should anything happen to me. Someone with whom Americans can sleep restfully at night, should the phone ring at three a.m...He's a hardworking, decisive American, whom I've placed a lot of trust in. I've seen his decisiveness on issues such as immigration, and I know he's the right man for the job. My fellow Americans, my running mate for the 2008 election is.......Shaggy!

Ooooh, so THAT'S why Obama rewrote his Iraq plan on his website. Because his plan stayed the same.
Yeah, sure. THAT makes since.

KW,
For the third time now, Obama has always been in favor of a phased withdrawl.
For god's sake man, the links you posted even showed that in 2005 he called for a phased withdrawl.
Really, for someone who backs mccain (assuming you do) you should really lay off accusing other candadates of being a flip flopper...
Especially now that the mccain campaign is suddenly saying that they will have the troops home in fewer than 16 months. http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN21464471
Especially especially when the bush "administration" is now in favor of a timeline.
Especially especially especially when the president of Iraq backs Obama's plan.
Especially expecially especially especially when the prime minister of great Britian also backs Obama's plan.
Especially expecially especially especially especially when what, 70% of the american population - ie, the center, backs withdrawl.
I could go on. Shall I?

But like, obama is a total flip flopper.....or....muslim....or...something.
And that's some straight talk we can count on, my friends!

Sounds like your head is up your ass in "see no evil" mode, huh pal?
This statement is just funny as hell!!! Winning the war? Really? what are we getting out of it? Cheaper oil? Nope. A friend in the Middle East? Uhhh NO! They are closer to Iran now more then ever. Got rid of the terrorists? Ummm seems they just went to Afganistan for awhile or are laying low.
As far as winning, we have been here before numbnuts. What is this lull in violence the 10th "corner" we have turned in Iraq. I love how you NeoCon stooges think that a month or two of good news washes away 7 and a half years of incompitance, lies, a waste of hundreds of billions of dollars, not to mention the thousands of dead or crippled Americans... and for what?
As far as helping the economy? That is just too funny. You been on Mars the last few years? Yopu must be the only person in America that is happy with teh economy right now... well some billionaire are too I guess...
hahaha... WOW. You NeoCons will say anything wont you?

I'm all for McCain picking Romney as his VP, as are the vast majority of conservatives out there. I find he's pretty palatable with the 'moderates' that I know. That includes fellow evangelical Christians that I know--we like his qualifications and his moral character, which is the most important thing. His grasp and expertise with business and economics, his pro-life stance (I'm not bothered that he changes his view over time, I did as well, that's life), his strong family image, etc. He would be fantastic. He would help put McCain over the top in states that he won, such as my state of Colorado, as well as Nevada, Michigan, etc. He is far and away the choice most Republicans and conservatives are looking for.
Most of my fellow conservatives still have a lot of reservations about McCain, as he's demonstrated a total lack of commmitment to the conservative principles that are still important to most Americans. We felt he and Huckabee manipulated the electoral process during the primaries in order to knock Romney out--something they would not have been able to do without playing games. Romney would help us feel much better about pulling the lever for McCain. We just don't trust him really, and we don't like being backed into a corner and told it's our duty to vote for the 'lesser of two evils'. We are sooo sick of that.
I also think it's time people stop distrusting anyone who is wealthy, especially when they worked so hard to make their own fortunes. It's the successful, hardworking, faithful people of this country that have made it the country it is...that supersedes religious differences as long as that person is of the right character.
Romney/McCain--that's my ticket!
