CU football coach Dan Hawkins on the Buffs' 3-0 start
uncbear08nm(Q) Hello Coach Hawkins, First of all I want to congratulate on your victory with West Virginia, I want to ask you if you can try to get your team to play against my school, University of Northern Colorado? Will that happen?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Ha- not sure how the schedule will play out down the road- doubtful- but you never know :)

Mark_Wolf(Q) You haven't updated your blog since your summer trip to Macchu Picchu. How are we supposed to know what Great Big Sea is doing these days?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Hey they are coming to Denver in October I think..........u better go........let me know how it is :)

ncbuff(Q) CONGRATULATIONS on a GREAT start!! I'm living in N. Carolina and trying to follow the Buffs as best as I can. I thought at the end of the W. VA game you mentioned that D. Scott was injured? Can you expand on his condition? Will he be available for FSU?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Yep- he was dinged a little in the E Wash game- he could have played more but speedy was playing well- he will defintiely play in Jacksonville- Keep flyin your Buff Flag in NC!
rickhill99(Q) Hi Coach.Congratulations on your win over W. Virginia. What are Florida State's weaknesses you would like to exploit?
Dan_Hawkins(A) They don't have weaknesses- FSU is a great program with great athletes and coaches- we just need to keep improving our game and go there and play as clean as possible!
Mark_Wolf(Q) Bobby Bowden will coach his 500th game on Saturday. Can you envision coaching that long?
Dan_Hawkins(A) That is unbelievable! Honestly, I do not think anyone will recreate what Coach Bowden and Coach Paterno have done. It is very tough these days- with all the attention on coaches- eventually people get tired of your jokes, your offense, your recruiting etc. as I always say- even Cats got cancelled.....................................
Mark_Wolf(P) After 7,485 performances - but they didn't have to block and tackle.
ncbuff(Q) Are you surprised that Speedy has done so well as a Freshman or could you tell during the recruiting process that he would pick it up this quickly?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Not surprised at all. We knew he had talent
Donkeys3(Q) Hey Coach Great win! So proud! Do you forsee using Stewart and Scott as a 1-2 combo, or going with who is hot?
Dan_Hawkins(A) I think eventually you will see both in there at the same time- trying to bring them along. In reality, I think major college football requires 3 guys to roll in there. It keeps the body fresh and you can make it through a 14 game season!
pbomber(Q) Coach, can we expect to see more I formation as the season goes along?
Dan_Hawkins(A) we want to be very multiple in all that we do- we still have many other wrinkles and options to put in the package- trying to ease it in so our guys can digest it all successfully
pbomber(Q) Follow up...I like our big tackles with their hand on the ground at the snap. Under center I formation does that for us. Is there a reason the staff has them standing at the snap so often?
Dan_Hawkins(A) They can choose whatever stance they want according to the situation- there are times we require them to be up or down- again depends on the play and situation

Arn(Q) Do you think most of those suspended Florida State players will be in the lineup this week?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Definitely
cubuffs(Q) Coach, I recently read that you went on a recruiting trip during the season! Talk about a 24/7 job. How much to you depend on your assistants to make sure the team is ready for the next opponent while you are gone? Thank you!
Dan_Hawkins(A) A bunch! On friday it is usually light with review- you have to balance it out. I like recruiting and it's important for me to get out as much as possible

Mark_Wolf(Q) How tough is it defensively to prepare for at least two and maybe three quarterbacks?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Each game presents some variables- we have seen several types of QB's thus far so that helps.
hawklove(Q) There was a rumor that we were gonna wear black helmets on thursday, what are the chances we see them sometime this season?
Dan_Hawkins(A) HAHA........Hey with Coach Hawk at the helm.............anything is possible..........But I will say this...........we have a classic look, I like that, the gold helmet with the Ralphie logo is first class one of the best and most recognized in college football
rickhill99(Q) Coach...How would you grade the performance of our defense so far?
Dan_Hawkins(A) They have done a solid job- we gave up points on offense and special teams which did not help- we were awesome on short yardage against WV
cubuffs(Q) With a major program like Florida State next up on the schedule, how hard is it to make sure your players don't get too over excited, especially since you will be playing in their backyard?
Dan_Hawkins(A) AH grasshopper.........u need to be in the program. That is our essence- nothing is above or below us.

ncbuff(Q) Coach how old will you be when you get to your 500th game (hopefully at CU)?
Dan_Hawkins(A) oh my gosh........................maybe 88? Just make sure the posse keeps me around until 60 ok :)
ncbuff(C) You will be around till you are 100 if I have anything to do with it!!!!!!!!! GO BUFFS!!!
jjcarv7(Q) Coach, how do you think the young O-line is progressing from week to week?
Dan_Hawkins(A) They were much improved vs WV but each week will present them with new challenges- Love them tho- Young, smart, tough, hard working- Coach Grimes is the man! - we will get better each week

Arn(Q) Glad to see CU in back to back games against West Virginia and Florida State, even those those two programs are in a bit of a slide at the moment. I'd think recruits would welcome that kind of challenge. Do they?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Slide...............haha they were both ranked last week. Yes we recruit to that. We want guys who want to play against those types of teams. As well as travel all over the country- this class will play from HI to FL- that is great for our university as well
jmosk(Q) Coach Hawkins, What do you see as your biggest recruiting needs for this next season? Will you actively pursue a quarterback during this recruiting phase?
Dan_Hawkins(A) We are building a base across the board- always O and D line are priorities. Yes we are recuiting a QB
fightcu14(Q) Hey coach I am a big Columbine Rebel fan so how much will Curtis Cunningham play this year?
Dan_Hawkins(A) SO AM I!!!!!!!!!!!! He played a bunch vs WV and did well- I would expect to see him continue to be a solid part of the D LINE- GO REBS!

jmosk(Q) Hawk, do you feel like you are underutilizing the fullback position? Any plays from UC Davis find their way into the playbook
Dan_Hawkins(A) No I do not- the FB is there to block for the TB and pass protect- they are the drones in the hive- even UCD doesn't have a FB much in their offense anymore :) After watching the old FB's I can see why................................................
leatherneck(Q) Coach: If CU beats FSU, do you think CU will be ranked in BCS
Dan_Hawkins(A) Who knows- we can't control that- we just have to keep improving- We will sit down in Feb and see how the year went

fightcu14(Q) Coach I went to the West Virginia game, was that one of the most electric crowds you have ever coached before? How many recurits are coming to watch the Texas game this year?
Dan_Hawkins(A) It defintely ranks right up there- I turned around a couple of times to take it all in..........the crowd and students were big time- i was blessed to be a part of it. We will have a bunch in for TX - keep the fans and excitement coming- it all helps
Metrunners(Q) How about that BIG win for Boise State last Saturday?
Dan_Hawkins(A) AWESOME................So stoked for them- autzen is tough........the young frosh was impressive........the signaling plays was pretty good..............and the father of my grandchild played well on D too :)
golfalum(Q) Hi Coach, I helped you guys get to know Anthony Perkins when he was in high school and it was great watching him play the other night. It looked like he took a step inside on Pat White's first run, but overall I thought he played well. Your thoughts? I'm very glad you're our coach!
Dan_Hawkins(A) Well AP is a special young man- CLASSY. He is so solid - great attention to detail - great student. He did play well- and will only get better. I am proud to be your coach as well- let's keep working to make CU better!
fightcu14(Q) Hawk, how much of you recruiting is based in Colorado? It seems to me that Colorado's high school football is gettting better and better.
Dan_Hawkins(A) Agreed- we have all of our coaches working CO- love keeping the great ones here at home- they have a special love for CU and the home state!
ncbuff(Q) It seems like Cody has really embraced a leadership role on the team. You must be pretty happy with Cody's performance as a coach and dad?
Dan_Hawkins(A) Too many pics- he has made some big time plays this year- first two td throws on thurs were dimes. He is a good person- caring, well balanced, - all due to his mom. GUYS you were great- I have to get back to work. This team has 400+ games on me........U are awesome. Take care and show up for Texas
