How the religious right got back on board the GOP bandwagon

Six months ago, Focus on the Family leader James Dobson was holding his nose about the Republican ticket.

Today he's on board and one of the conductors of the Republican bandwagon, all because of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, reports David Montero.

While an unknown quantity to many Americans, Palin has been on Focus on the Family's radar since at least 2006.

Kevin Clarkson, an Anchorage attorney who does work for the Alliance Defense Fund - loosely linked to Focus on the Family - knew of Palin's work dating back to 1998 when she supported Alaska's ballot measure outlawing gay marriage.

Focus Action, the political arm of Focus on the Family, helped with that campaign, though Palin at the time was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and may have only crossed paths with the group.

According to a recent Time magazine story, Palin turned the 1996 mayoral race into a partisan affair - injecting such issues as abortion into the race.

But it was when she beat Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski in the 2006 primary that Clarkson got a call from Focus on the Family asking him questions about the strength of her social conservative credentials.

The Nation's Max Blumenthal reports on a gathering of the secretive Council for National Policy at which many of the leaders of the Christian conservative movement were energized as they watched Palin deliver her speech when John McCain introduced her as his running mate.

CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.

Though Dobson and Perkins reportedly attended the recent CNP meeting in Minneapolis, a full roster of guests would be nearly impossible to require. The CNP deliberately operates below the radar, going to excessive lengths to obscure its activities. According to official CNP policy, "The media should not know when or where we meet or who takes part in our programs before or after a meeting." Thus the CNP's Minneapolis gathering was free of reporters.

I learned of the get-together only through an online commentary by one of its attendees, top Dobson/Focus on the Family flack Tom Minnery. Minnery described the mood as CNP members watched Palin accept her selection as John McCain's Vice Presidential pick. "I was standing in the back of a ballroom filled with largely Republicans who were hoping against hope that something would put excitement back into this campaign," Minnery said. "And I have to tell you, that speech by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- people were on their seats applauding, cheering, yelling... That room in Minneapolis watching on the television screen was electrified. I have not seen anything like it in a long time."

The ‘Patch Project Initiative’ was created to promote health and educational awareness emphasizing the importance of physical fitness pertinent to child and youth development. It is our goal to donate Patch Fitness Equipment to schools to do our part to help the children of our nation to focus on the healthy lifestyle choices of physical activity and fitness. Grants allow us to donate patch fitness centers to schools in districts that have been severely impacted by state budget cuts. At a time when many resources and programs have been eliminated it is our intent to alleviate some of the burden by adding a program at no cost to the school while addressing a childhood obesity epidemic. With the design of this special equipment children will begin to realize that fitness is fun and will begin to develop healthy habits that will have a lifelong impact.

Studies have shown that physical activity boosts academic achievement. We expect that as educators implement the Patch Fitness Curriculum into their schools they will see a dramatic improvement in academic scores in as little as 8 weeks. Schools currently using the Patch Fitness Program have already experienced positive results. Not only will schools see changes in academic scores, the students will be healthier as well. As soon as funding is available we will contact each school to let them know about their donation and the program that is available to their students. Schools that receive the Patch donation will not receive just the fitness equipment itself. The Egoscue Research Institute will present the donation along with conducting a mini fitness camp for each school. The mini fitness camp will use a relay obstacle course format including potato sack races, hula-hoop, jump rope, water balloon toss, bouncing balls and push-ups. Following the “fun outdoor exercises” the Patch will be donated to the school on behalf of the Egoscue Research Institute and your foundation. A donation plaque will be attached to the fitness center recognizing the you as the donor. Press Releases will be sent to invite media to the ribbon cutting ceremony of the patch donation and the fitness camp. Fitness experts will train students and faculty how to use the obstacle course. Follow up instruction with faculty, post event, is available to ensure the equipment is being utilized to its maximum potential and to measure physical and academic results.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, over the past three decades overweight children in the U.S. tripled among kids ages 6 to 11. Many health problems are associated with children being overweight. Studies have shown that children who are overweight have a greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus, asthma, and orthopedic problems and are more likely to be at risk for heart disease. The epidemic is real, no one questions that any longer—our nation’s youth are in terrible shape! It’s reported that this will be the first generation in 100 years with a shorter life expectancy. It’s in everyone’s best interest to address this disturbing situation. So what do we do about it?

Join us in our effort to donate the Patch indoor "O" Course to schools through the ‘Patch Project Initiative’. In launching this program we hope to raise awareness in the areas of health and education, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness pertinent to child and youth development. Patch Fitness Equipment in schools encourages the promotion of physical activity that is fun and beneficial instilling the importance of exercise at an early age.

What I noticed during the DNC was that the Dems communicated very effectively with images. I thought many of the commentators missed the effectiveness of the convention because they were concentrating on the word.

Last night, I thought the RNC was much less image and much more word oriented. Fred Thompson's speech was very good, but he kept coughing and his recitation of the facts of John McCain's life at the Hanoi Hilton was rather dry. Even the documentaries about TR, RR and Bush I thought were rather low key.

It will be interesting to see how Sarah Palin communicates with the American public. She is such a blank slate, this speech will carry a very profound first impression. It is being written for her, so she will have to go beyond the mere delivery to make a good impression. Will she create an image that is favorable beyond the 29 per centers in the audience?

There are only eight weeks to the election. There is the possibility that Ms. Palin could take the nation by storm and become -- GASP! -- a celebrity. An American Idol. An Alaskan Princess. The shot of youth needed by the aging party. Or will she be something else? An extremist. A pretender.

Differentiating between lifestyles, culture, opinions is normal and necessary, but should not be accompanied by vilification or any physical actions.

I have a constitutional right to protect traditional marriage through law. I don't need to try to change the behavior of homosexuals in order to do that. I am not a bigot just because I have a difference of opinion on what constitutes a marriage recognized by our legal system.

    Kevin J Jones writes:

It's unclear whether the conservative Evangelical leaders really considered a break with the GOP over a McCain candidacy, or if they had to appear that way to get him to tilt their way on a few issues. But they're still losing.

Let's note that with McCain-Palin, they've gotten on-board with a ticket whose members have supportsed same-sex domestic partnerships. This further normalizes what the "Religious Right" rightly opposes. What's more, domestic partnership law has served as a precedent for activist judges to instate same-sex marriage in California.

Further, none of the pro-lifers I've read are saying a word of criticism about the daughter and her boyfriend's dalliance. They're so scared of encouraging anybody to an abortion that they'll remain silent about the lesser vice of teen fornication. Or maybe they're quiet because they're so desperate for approval or political influence. This marks yet a further compromise.

Finally, for all the "sanctity of marriage" rhetoric, few social conservatives are noting that Palin's daughter and her boyfriend are facing significant pressure to become engaged and married. One or both of them might feel unduly obligated to marry because of the pregnancy, or because of its effects on Gov. Palin's career.

"Shotgun weddings" are just asking to be annulled.

While I certainly wish them the best if they are freely marrying, I hope they are allowed to break off the engagement if they so wish, at least after the November election.

Many of the media and left-wing attacks on Palin are hideous, ungentlemanly, and barbaric. Their double-standard is clear, and that's helping rally the demoralized GOP base. If McCain intended this outcome, he's smarter than I thought.

Gays up, anonymous down. A perfect example of a zero sum game.

Obviously giving gays equal rights will take something away from you. But you have put it clear enough for a child to see that in order to be secure in your bigotry, gays must be less equal.

Thank you, thank you dear for your public service.

jay/me2 - Sorry, but two years ago we spoke in an overwhelming voice that marriage for gays IS a special right, one that we felt so strongly about that we voted to amend the state constitution for.

You want gay marriage, move to Mass or Cal.

    Thanks for playing there kids.

Hogar De Vuelta (العودة) Christians are not bigots writes:

    jay,

bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.

Christians believe what the bible says regarding homosexuality and all other sins. MOST do not hate sinners because they are sinners. MOST are not intolerant, but that does not mean that they will promote sin or give special priveleges to those who promote sin. That is not bigotry, but I see a lot of bigotry toward Christians and conservatives on this blog.

Anonymous above is actually pretty smart - notice he says (in caps, but I won't yell it at you) "...just like het couples need".

Notice he didn't say het 'married' couples.

    Also he says "need".

I won't argue that it is prudent for every couple to have the legal stuff Anon. mentions, but the fact is, most of those are automatically conferred upon mariage. He also does not really address death. In a married couple, estate automatically goes to the spouse (in most states). It may may take awhile to get the death certificate around to the bank etc. etc., and having a living will and power of attorney does make it easier, but a het 'married' couple doesn't actually need it. A het 'unmarried' couple still does.

So as far as I can see, it is heterosexual 'married' couples who are getting all the benefits.

Obviously, the fairest thing to do is to rewrite all laws so that they do not favor anyone just because of their marital status, including tax laws. We are all born as individuals, if we later choose to get into any relationship with shared ownerships and do not fill out the paperwork for our own legal protections, that's one thing. But if this group of 'married' people is getting special benefits automatically, just by getting married (such as not having to fill out all that paperwork which may require the $ervices of a lawyer to be considered legal and which will almost certainly have to be signed by a notary, which will take time, trouble, and $), and if the status of 'marriage' is resticted to a narrow definition of people involved in such economic relationships, well then, that sounds unfair to me.
