Rocky/CBS4 poll: Udall takes 13-point lead over Schaffer

Mark Udall has built a 13-point lead over Bob Schaffer in the race for the U.S. Senate - and done it largely by taking a 3-1 lead among unaffiliated voters, the Rocky/CBS4 News poll shows.

Lynn Bartels and Ed Sealover report:

More than half the voters said they believe Udall is more in touch with the concerns of average Colorado families, according to the latest Rocky Mountain News/CBS4 poll.

Labeling Udall a "Boulder liberal" didn't have the effect Republicans had hoped, said the pollsters, Lori Weigel and Rick Ridder.

"Liberal is not a dirty word anymore," Weigel said.

"It's the Year of the Liberal," Ridder added.

Udall leads Schaffer 51 percent to 38 percent -- a 13-point difference. Only 5 percent of voters were undecided.

The poll findings are based on statewide telephone interviews with 500 registered voters last Tuesday through Thursday. The margin of error is 4.38 percent.

Schaffer's campaign manager, Dick Wadhams, said their internal polling shows the candidates closer, but he declined to release figures.

Ridder and Weigel said Udall's folksy ads, with Colorado's outdoors usually serving as the backdrop, oozed a Western theme that resonated with voters.

"He looks like the type of person you want in Washington, who's all collected and can handle anything and is going to take the economic crisis and try to work together," Weigel said.

Udall's "calm, cool, collected and conciliatory" approach is much like Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's, she said.

In fact, Udall fared better among unaffiliated voters than Obama. Udall got 62 percent, compared with Obama's 58 percent.

Made your choice for Senate? Did the "Boulder liberal" tag on Udall backfire?

The Republican presidential candidate does not help Schaffer. Usually, the presidential candidate can provide coat tails to fellow party members in state and local races.

Since McCain is almost as liberal as McCain, all the coat tails go to the Democrats.

If you want to vote for a candidate that actual believes in smaller government, vote Bob Barr.

McCain is going to lose by 10% anyway. Send a message to the Republicans that unless they return to free market, small government policy, there is no need for them to exist. The Democrats have the market cornered on big government and market regulation.

Vote for liberty. Vote and join the Libertarian Party, or accept the mediocrity of McCain and tell the Republicans that it's okay to try a Solialist-lite strategy.

Hopefully the tactic of trying to get Americans to hate other Americans is a thing of the past. The GOP has crippled this country, it is not going to be healed if people like Dick Wadhams and Bob Schaeffer are successful at spreading their cancer. Both of those guys need to get a real job.

CALIFORNIA POLLS SAY OBAMA UP BY 15%, EARLY VOTING RESULTS SAYS ITS NOW 00.5%!

The results are simply shocking. The polls showed Barack Obama with an 18 point lead in California just a few days ago. The results thus far are the complete opposite. In the most liberal state in the entire country, the results are that 99,000 Republicans have voted and 96,000 Democrats voted. In the mail-in balloting the results so far are that 9,000 Democrats sent in their ballots and that 5,000 Republicans did so. So with nearly 210,000 people having voted early, the Democrats have only a 1,000 vote advantage in one of the most liberal states in America--less than 00.5% advantage.

REMEMBER MIKE DUKAKIS...UP BY 11 AROND THIS TIME AND LOST IN LOPSIDED LANDSLIDE!

sas, if thats correct I guess the stealing of the election is going well in california. Why is it you idiots on the right can't see it. Polls every where show americans are sick of repubs yet, somehow miraculously they pull of the upset. Isn't that a little fishy for even you sas. Doesn't that make you wonder about the intergrity of voting.

How do you know what the vote is in California? Votes aren't counted until the polls close eight days from now. The quality of the data is similar to the magazine poll that predicted Landon would beat FDR. Or projecting the early returns from Peoria as proof that McCain is going to carry Illinois without counting Cook County that has 75% of the state's population.

This is the problem with people spreading hate like Palin and her socialist comments. There are fringes of unstable people out there that need only an inkling of support from the mainstream to feel justified. This is sad and I don't blame the GOP for it, I blame them for not standing up against it. McCain and Palin better stop sowing hate because you reap what you sow, it is time for the GOP to split from their ultra right wing base and realize that people like this, Timothy McVeigh, and Eric Rudolf didn't start out as killers they were motivated by ideology. Take one look at Todd Palin and you will know the fringe is far too close. It is time to be an upstanding citizen John McCain and take back your comments.

Pretty much Palin’s comments do exactly that. You want to reconsider your statement? Calling people socialist is pretty much exactly what you claim your party doesn’t do. Communism is a form of socialism and your euphemisms for what your party does is not accurate. A few years back there was a Republican named Joe McCarthy that did exactly what you are claiming Republicans are innocent of. Your party has a HUGE history of this so don’t think Republicans are clean from blame in any way shape or form.
