Obama/swastika sign at anti-stimulus rally

obamaswastikartl.jpg
Photo from a post by Michael Ditto at ProgressNow Colorado from a video by Jen Caltrider.

During the anti-stimulus rally at the State Capitol, a guy stood beside conservative columnist and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin with an "Obama" sign in which the 'O' was filled with a swastika.

Julie Hutchinson
reports:

After syndicated columnist and TV commentator Michelle Malkin spoke at Tuesday's rally, she was besieged by people asking her to autograph protest signs and pose for photos.

A man wearing a green fatigue jacket and sunglasses held up his camera to snap a shot of himself with Malkin. He was holding a sign with the name Obama in large, black block letters.

And inside the letter O was a prominent, black swastika.

A photo posted on several political Web sites, including ProgressNow Colorado, a liberal activist group, shows a photo of Malkin posing with the man carrying the swastika sign. Malkin could not be reached for comment late Tuesday on whether she saw the swastika sign.

Malkin's personal blog shows seven photos taken at the Denver rally, but the sign with the swastika cannot be seen in any of them. Malkin's Web site includes nine minutes of video taken at the rally, but the sign is not visible in the video.

Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry said he arrived at the rally 15 minutes late and didn't see the swastika sign.

"If someone had that sign, it was totally inappropriate and unacceptable," the Grand Junction Republican said. "There's one in every crowd. Remember the people hissing and booing at President Bush at the inauguration."

I am no fan of Malkin, but I will give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. If you look at the picture, the swastika sign is being held out of her line of view. Not to say that she was totally ignorant of it, but that it is possible. Given too that she was taking pics with multiple parties, it was likely pretty chaotic and crowded. Not certain that she can or should be held accountable for what she was not holding or actively endorsing.

ACHTUNG, ACHTUNG: THE MORTGAGE NAZI SPEAKS:

THE MORTGAGE NAZI is going to take $75 billion from the original TARP and save the homes of about 9 million people (victims) who made very bad choices in taking out a mortgage they couldn't afford. Or are losing their homes because they lost their jobs.

Will everyone who has lost their job now have the government guarantee their loans?

THE MORTGAGE NAZI'S scheme will provide for the refinancing of home loans for "millions of families in traditional mortgages who are underwater or close to it.''

It will modify loans for those victims whao are "stuck'' in sub-prime mortgages that they can't afford because of soaring interest rates or "personal misfortune.'' And with federal subsidies, it will enable banks to lower interest rates for many.

The scheme will bailouts nine million families (aka "victims") in restructuring or refinancing their mortgages to avert foreclosure, the White House says.

The scheme "will not help speculators who took risky bets on a rising market and bought homes not to live in but to sell, THE MORTGAGE BAZI plans to say. "It will not help dishonest lenders who acted irresponsibility, distorting the facts and dismissing the fine print at the expense of buyers who didn't know better. And it will not reward folks who bought homes they knew from the beginning they would never be able to afford. In short, this scheme will not save every home. ''

The scheme will enable Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the institutions that guarantee home loans for millions, to refinance mortgages valued at more than 80 percent of the homes' values. The Treasury plans to provide up to $200 billion in capital to ensure that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can stabilize markets and hold loan rates down.

First, it is unrealistic to believe that the government will not bail out those "who bought homes they knew from the beginning they would never be able to afford." How on are they going to determine that? How are they going to separate the idiots from the fraudsters?

As for the rest, I'll believe it when I see it. How surprised would you be if ACORN got a little of this cash? More "neighborhood stabilization?"

Meanwhile, the rest of us are being punished and footing the bill and the under-achieving slackers and deadbeats are being rewarded. The horror is that its all race and class based.

Here is just a couple of the decisions I would make just to entertain you for my amusement.

For one thing, I would not sign a porkulus bill and call it a stimulus bill when in actuality it is LARGELY nothing but a spending bill for Democratic pet projects.
I would not run around scaring the people just to get support for the Porkulus, that hurts the economy even more. When a President puts the fear of global collapse in the people they are going to clam up tighter and tighter at a time when we need them to go out and spend.
I would not still be in campaign mode flying around in a jet that costs the tax payers $50,000(?) an hour or more to promote the porkulus especially when Congress just got done scolding the Auto heads for doing the same.
I would not have forced this bill to get passed as quickly as possible labeling it as an imminent emergency or a global catastrophe will take place, than take the weekend off to play basketball then fly some more to Denver so he can have a Political back drop to sign it thus wasting more tax dollars in this time of "emergency crisis".
I would call for the heads of the Mortgage companies for running them into the ground instead of rewarding them with a spot in his cabinet.
I would not be a partisain hack like Barry and I would call for the resignations of Dodd, Paulson, Bernekey and the rest of the Democrats who blocked tougher regulations on F&F.
I would stand up to Pelosi, Reid and the others who control him and not let them run all over me.
I would be honest with the people from the start and not right out lye to them like Barry has done from the beginning just to get elected. Too bad so many idiots bought into it or just didn't care.
Bottom line is I wouldn't reward any business or person for failure, now the flood gates are open and it won't be able to be plugged.
The taxpayers will be stuck from now on paying for nationalized HC, welfare ect...because now that they will get a taste of the socialist handout, we will never be able to take it away.

Most important, I would have given the Senators time to read the damn Porkulus and tell Princess Pelosi to put her plans to fly to Rome off that we have much more important issues here at home and I would have kept my promise to allow the people to view it before they voted on it and before he signed it.

The Porkulus was deteriorating very fast in the public view the more we learned about it.
That is why it was held under a cloud of darkness and 11th hour injections and needed to be passed very quickly before the people started to voice their disapproval to their reps.

Now the tables are turned and Obama is the target, and the liberals go berserk with rage that someone dared to insult their god.

    Classic."

So what are you saying Gunny - they did it first so now it's OK? How childish.

When "the liberals called Bush a Nazi", the conservatives went berserk as well, but now that "the tables are turned", folks like you take exception not with the swastika, but with the lefts reaction.

How hypocritical and yes, classic indeed.

The sign is pointing out that Obama's tactics are akin to the tactics of the Nazi party. The reporter knew this, I find it interesting that instead of acknowledging this, the reporter implied something evil behind the display of the swastika.

These types of gimmicks should be very familiar to Democrats who used them for the last 8 years. When Democrats display offensive symbols to make a point it's deemed free speech. When those protesting democrats display offensive symbols to make their point, it's hate speech.

Incredible arrogance and audacity, Reporter. But just about what we expect from the modern press, left wing bias.

You seem pretty sure of that. I assume you can back it up with more than BS.

HOW are Obama's tactics akin to the tactics of the Nazi party? What does Obama DO that is the same as what the Nazis DID?

The answer is not TORTURE, unless you replace "Obama" with "GWB".

You did a great job of talking around the issue by telling us you wouldn't do what you think Obama is doing, but I digress. I don't know if the bill will work or not, but at least Obama is putting his presidency on the line. The GOPers in Congress are just denouncing it and nothing more. No risk on their part. BTW- I guarandamntee you that there is GOP spnosored pork in it as well. The MO of the GOP lately- the more we rail against something, the more guilty we are of doing the same (see Haggard, Foley, Craig). Hope you're happy your tax money went to Alaska for the Bridge that Secessionist Sarah said no thanks to (and yet refunded the nation's tax dollars to Alaskans).

I was wondering- why is it that it was probably OK with you to spend trillions of dollars on rebuilding the infrastructure in Iraq but not doing the same in the US. Do you hate America?

Obama was unwise to come to Denver to sign this mess. Now he has forever linked himself not only to the outrageous lies and exorbitant spending but to the tokenism of subsidized green technology.

Wow a whole 3 to 5 percent of the energy needs of the museum are supplied by the solar units that cost five times as much as that percentage would cost. On top of that, the lifespan of the solar panels is maxed out at 30 years and can be as short as 10.

Finally, Obama sealed his own fate by rushing this one through and then waiting three days to sign it. Whether or not there is a lot of bad spending in this, there will be perceptions of fraud. That is what would doom him in the end even if he did nothing else. And he is still throwing money on the ground to buy the votes he already got. Of course it is your money so why should he be careful?

A word about perceptions and a lesson learned the hard way by some of the most successful business managers in the country. Coke.

When, in the early 80's, Coca Cola introduced NEW Coke, it had been tested, evaluated and re-tested for two years. The experiment was ordered by managers eager to enlarge their share of the market.

In the late 70's and early 80's, those same managers had sold off portions of other businesses only to have the portion they kept become more valuable than the whole had been. It was only natural they would try the NEW Coke rollout.

Many people were excited to see a new Coke product introduced until the introduction came to the lines about ending production of "old" Coke. The public went nuts.

Groups were organized to boycott all Coke products with the exception of original Coke products. Those products flew off of the shelves and a healthy gray market sprang up. Coke got a lot of PR and lost market share at the same time.

The taste tests had been spot on that more people chose the new formula over to old. Hindsight explained this failure as two fold.

First, they held the tasting in malls. While there were a set of parameters to include older people, most of the testing was done by younger people, teens in particular. Since the unscientific part of the test was just a "pick one" test without demographics, no one caught on to the idea that only teens and young adults favored it.

Second, they underestimated the power of a spontaneous backlash. Coke never expected people to get mad. They figured that they would buy the product when the old stuff was gone. Only two months after the initial roll out, they announced "Classic" Coke. The entire upper level marketing staff was fired. A lot of upper management ended up fired and Coke spent ten years regaining the lost market share. They are still behind where they were before New Coke.

Moral for Obama: Never underestimate the value of passion in the populace. Reason and logic have no part in this passion. If you use it for gain, beware its ability to destroy you completely on any suspicion you have failed their perceptions.

I expect the general anger at Obama's plans to grow. Not from any action or inaction he actually takes part in, but the mob that elevated him has a short temper, a voracious appetite and no loyalty.

An interesting warning. Too bad you didn't share your wise insight with the GOP over the last few years, sounds a lot like what happened to them in the past two election cycles.

Also, your "New Coke" example was interesting, but fails to look at the entire history of "Coke". They had been continually losing market share to "Pepsi" since I don't know, maybe the 1920's. I think it started when you got twice the Pepsi for the price, an appeal to a younger audience. If I remember one of my marketing lectures from B-school correctly, its been so long ago. The on-going erosion of market share was a lot more about what Pepsi did right than what Coke did wrong.

Only history will accurately judge the actions of our government in response to our present financial crisis. I do remember that FDR was a much better antidote for the depression than Hoover.
