Garrett shoots for career in movies
Friday, August 26 at 12:01 AM

Former Montbello High basketball player Shedrick Garrett quit his day job at Equifax to pursue a dream in entertainment. So far, the move is paying off.

Garrett, who was a starter on the Warriors team that played for 1992 Class 6A championship, completed the filming of his first movie, Madea's Family Reunion, starring actor/director Tyler Perry. In his first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Perry played three characters.

Perry was impressed by Garrett's imitation of Madea and signed him to a contract. In the Reunion movie (scheduled for release next February), Garrett said, "I did a couple of shots with my face. But for the most part, I was (Perry's) double, meaning I’m Madea.

"It's been a blessing, coming in personal contact with Lynn Whitfield and Blair Underwood and working with Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson . . . it was just crazy being in the middle, acting with two legends."

Garrett, 31, also is making a name for himself in the comedy world -- Shed G. He will be performing Saturday at Kasbah (Sixth and Chambers) at 9 p.m. Call 303-367-0591 for more info.

On Oct. 15, Garrett returns to Denver with his Christian Comedy Series at Now Faith Christian Center.

› SI.com's John Donovan lists the Colorado Rockies as one of his top five spoilers in the final weeks of the major-league baseball season. Donovan wrote, "Colorado will be lucky to avoid 100 losses. And that makes the Rockies the perfect spoiler. The Padres, leading the ugly NL West, have to be a little concerned with the Rockies. San Diego has 10 games remaining with Colorado, starting with a three-game series in Petco Park this weekend . . . Look for a big four-game series at Coors Field from Sept. 19-22. Or, if you're the Padres, look out."

› The Arena Football League released its list of free agents for 2006. The Arena Bowl champion Colorado Crush has a league-low three free agents listed -- quarterback Jose Davis, fullback/linebacker Chad Dukes and lineman Bryant Shaw.
