Sacks and picks near equal on scale
The Denver Broncos enter today's game against the Oakland Raiders at Invesco Field with 21 sacks. That total ranks second-lowest among all NFL teams, and only seven more than the league's individual leader in sacks -- Raiders defensive lineman Derrick Burgess.
It is possible that the Broncos could end the regular season with a rare occurence -- more interceptions than sacks. Through 14 games, Denver has 18 interceptions -- second in the AFC (behind the Cincinnati Bengals with 30) and six more than all of last season.
Only four times in the franchise's history have the Broncos finished a season with more interceptions than sacks -- the most recent time in 1987. That year, Denver had 28 interceptions and 26 sacks. Denver defenses also posted more interceptions than sacks in 1967 (28-19), 1962 (27-25) and 1960 (27-23.5).
In their game against Oakland on Nov. 13, the Broncos sacked Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins four times, while intercepting him three times. In seven home games this season, Denver's defense has recorded 14 sacks and seven interceptions.
