Broncos rookie still being picked on
A day after Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went after Denver Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth repeatedly on the football field, Peter King took his shot at the rookie in a column for SI.com.
King labeled Foxworth the "Goat of the Week", writing "next to the phrase 'burnt toast' in Webster's Dictionary is a head shot of Foxworth."
But Steelers wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, who caught five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown, said he thought Roethlisberger could've had success picking on Broncos Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey too.
"I don't really know what kind of coverage Champ was playing, but we probably could have gotten a lot more deep balls on him," Wilson said. "He was just, I don't know . . . he was just looking at Ben the whole time and we were running by him.
"I kept telling Ben he could throw the deep ball on this guy the whole day -- he's not playing it. But I don't know what type of defense they were in."
NOTEWORTHY
› Good things seem to happen in tens for the Steelers -- with Super Bowls X, XXX and now XL on their ledger. Meanwhile, look for Denver at Super Bowl XLII in Arizona -- the Broncos having gone to XII, XXII and XXXII.
› Steelers linebacker (and former Colorado State athlete) Joey Porter has three sacks and a forced fumble in the postseason. On Sunday the Broncos had a hard time keeping him off quarterback Jake Plummer. "It's hard for a tackle to block him -- he's one of the best in the game coming off that edge,'' linebacker Larry Foote said. "He's playing his best football at the right time. He's our leader and he's making big plays."
› Giving up 81 points to Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant on Sunday might’ve seemed like a low point for the Toronto Raptors. However, the Raptors, who played the Denver Nuggets at Pepsi Center on Monday, scored only 66 points in a loss to Memphis on Nov. 30 -- at the time dropping their record to 1-15.
› After Sunday's loss Broncos linebacker/special teams ace/comedian Keith Burns saw me dressed in a black suit and joked on whether I was going to a football game or a funeral. Tee-hee. From what I saw of the Broncos against Pittsburgh in the AFC title game, I decided to go with the latter. In the words of one former Broncos defensive player commenting to friends outside Denver's locker room, "at least compete."
› There's talk that quarterback Gus Frerotte won't be back with the Miami Dolphins next season. If the 34-year-old Frerotte continues to play in the league next season, look for his name to surface as a backup with the Broncos.
