Theismann speaking out about EP
He has gone from being a two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback to just a regular Joe who encounters health problems like thousands of men across the country.
Former NFL player-turned-broadcaster Joe Theismann is spokesperson for "EP in America". He was diagnosed with having an enlarged prostate, and spent time in Denver on Thursday trying to raise awareness about the importance of prostate exams.
"What I'm saying is, you don't have to live with it if, in fact, you have it," Theismann said. "Just go to the doctor and schedule an exam. You go in for 10 seconds and find out what's going on with your body." There is more information about EP on the Web site www.prostatecare.com.
Theismann, who will be the color commentator for ESPN's new Monday Night Football package this year, said Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan may have had his best year coaching in 2005.
"When you look at the Denver Broncos, I don't think anybody really looks at their record. They lose their first game to Miami, 34-10. They lose to the New York Giants on the last play of the game literally, 24-23, and lose in Kansas City by four points," Theismann said. "So how good is this football team?
"To me, this football team is waiting to explode to greatness. They play very solid."
NOTEWORTHY
SVATOS IN THE CLUTCH: Colorado Avalanche rookie Marek Svatos is leading the National Hockey League with eight game-winning goals this season -- which is the most by an NHL rookie since Joe Nieuwendyk had eight game-winners with the Calgary Flames in 1987-88. The league record for game-winning goals scored by a rookie is nine, set by Steve Larmer with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1982-83 season. Svatos has scored 26 goals this season -- 11 of them either tying games or giving the Avalanche a lead. That includes six in the final period. Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson has scored a league-best 16 goals in the third period, with Svatos second at 12. Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has scored the most goals among NHL rookies (27), with Svatos second at 26.
One football memory I will never forget is the crack of the leg when Theismann went down, with a yelp. The microphones caught the whole thing and it was pretty awful. It is good of Joe to speak out on health issues. I myself, do my part, by offerring free breast exams.
