A heartbeat away from contenders?
What stood out about the NBA All-Star weekend? Three things here -- there were no Denver Nuggets in the game, the three-point shooting contest winner should not have been allowed out of the first round and the best dunker lost to the smallest dunker.
Now we get back to what should be the real issue -- winning the NBA championship. The Detroit Pistons seem equipped to represent the East. The San Antonio Spurs still seem best suited to win the West. It's up to the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns to prevent those two favorites from staging an NBA Finals rematch.
So where does that leave the Nuggets? Try unequipped and not suited to contend with the big boys.
Picked by some to win at least 50 games, the Nuggets are on pace to finish barely above .500. The team has a number of needs -- including something you don't often find by way of a trade.
That is, the heart of a champion.
NOTEWORTHY
The Denver Broncos, with their eyes cast on Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens, will not ignore their defense during free-agency. How about this for a potential acquisition -- Oakland Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson. Woodson turns 30 years old in October. He missed 10 games last season due to injury, but when healthy can be a playmaker and presence in the secondary. Here's my catch -- convert Woodson to a free safety. Over the years it's been a good move for cornerbacks the likes Rod Woodson. Add Charles Woodson into the mix with Champ Bailey and John Lynch, and the Broncos' secondary will be improved dramatically.
How about getting an all pro left tackle.
and Brett Favre? instead.
Defense needs a pass rush too.
But just watch. They will draft a linebacker again. More playoff failures to come
