On this date, 1976 Olympic champion Leon Spinks, in his eighth professional bout, upset world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas. Spinks, who weighed 197 pounds -- 27 pounds less than Ali -- won the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association titles by a split decision.
