Locals catch eye of ringside cameras

Denver boxers are getting their fare share of fist time on television.

Last month former Manual High athlete Stevie Johnston scored a victory over Steve Quinonez on a pay-per-view card. Last Friday Denver's Donald Camarena suffered only the second defeat of his career, losing his World Boxing Council Continental Americas super-lightweight title to Paul Malignaggi in a bout televised on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" series.

On March 3, local undefeated junior welterweight Anthony Mora gets some TV time. Mora is scheduled to face Rustam Nugaev of Russia in a bout that will air on the cable network Showtime's "ShoBox" series. Mora, nickamed "The Matrix", is 15-0 with 10 knockouts. Nugaev is 15-4. The fight will take place at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

The bout, which will air at 7 p.m. MST, is on the undercard of the International Boxing Federation/International Boxing Organization world flyweight championship bout between Vic Darchinyan and Diosdado Gabi.

NOTEWORTHY

Denver-based artist Malcolm Farley has added yet another championship painting to his vast collection. Farley recently painted a scene from Super Bowl XL, which he and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will autograph today in Pittsburgh.

VIP and preferred seating tables still are available for the final round of the U.S. Boxing Championships on March 11 at the Sheraton Hotel-Colorado Springs. Call Tickets West (719-576-2626) or Colorado Springs Sports Corporation (719-634-7333, ext. 1000) for more information.

Hey Sam,
We have a great boxing here in Denver and nobody talks about it. Why don't you give some info on "The Matrix?"
