Broncos look to buck odds in 2006

Wednesday, February 8 at 12:05 AM

As soon as the confetti blasts inside Detroit's Ford Field signaled the end to Super Bowl XL, oddsmakers across the country started work figuring out the champion to be crowned at Super Bowl XLI in Miami.

The on-line sports book Intertops.com posted the Indianapolis Colts as favorites at 6-to-1, followed by New England Patriots (13-to-2), Pittsburgh Steelers (9-to-1), Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks (all at 12-to-1) and Carolina Panthers (14-to-1).

Here's an odds-beater for Broncos fans to consider. The Pittsburgh Steelers became the eighth team to win the Super Bowl a year after losing in the conference championship game. The 2005 Steelers and 1976 Oakland Raiders are the only AFC teams to accomplish the feat.

In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers (1984 and 1994), Chicago Bears (1985), Washington Redskins (1987), Dallas Cowboys (1995) and Green Bay Packers (1996) won titles after losing in the conference title game the previous season.

Three teams lost in a Super Bowl the season after they lost in a conference championship game -- Pittsburgh (1995), the Philadelphia Eagles (2004) and Los Angeles Rams (1979).
