Skills event brings back former Broncos

Friday, February 10 at 6:01 PM

Former Denver Broncos players John Elway and Karl Mecklenburg are on the roster to play in an NFL Alumni "Air-it-Out" flag football game during the Pro Bowl Skills Challenge in Hawaii. The event will air today at 4 p.m. on ESPN, with another former Broncos player -- Tom Jackson -- serving as one of the co-hosts.

Hall of Famers Steve Young, Marcus Allen and Eric Dickerson are listed for the "Air-it-Out" game. A number of current NFL players will compete in football-related skills events -- including Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith. Smith is in the "Best Hands" competition with Chad Johnson (Cincinnati Bengals), Chris Chambers (Miami Dolphins), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Antonio Gates (San Diego Chargers), Torry Holt (St. Louis Rams) and Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers).

NOTEWORTHY

Arvada resident Danielle Granquist called the completion of her cross-country "30-at-30" a "spectacular trip." Granquist has visited every NHL arena, completing the project she started in 2000 with a trip to Buffalo to watch the Sabres and Montreal Canadiens play on Thursday. Granquist's parents also made the trip to Buffalo. Her step-father is former Broncos player Dave Preston.

The March issue of Golf Magazine lists its "gold medal resort" choices for 2006. The list of 25 resorts includes The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony is having the best season of his young career -- yet he wasn't voted by the fans as an All-Star Game starter, nor was he selected by the coaches as a reserve on the Western Conference team. Makes me wonder how much Anthony might wish to play on the east coast, where he probably could receive more media attention.
