Weight loss may be gain for Shealy
TUCSON -- Now that Colorado Rockies first baseman Ryan Shealy has trimmed 15 pounds off his body, he can expect a steady diet of practice in the outfield this spring.
"That's pretty much the only way I can be on this team," Shealy said. "I play first, and Todd (Helton) obviously isn't going anywhere. Just to be a part of everything I need to learn. Hopefully I can be good enough out there to where I can make it work."
Carrying 235 pounds on his 6-foot-5 frame this spring, Shealy is noticeably slimmer -- but still appears every bit as powerful at the plate. Last season he batted .328 with 26 home runs at Class AAA Colorado Springs.
"My body feels a lot better now than it has in the past," Shealy said. "Now I'm just trying to stay where I'm at and trying to learn how to play the outfield."
Teammates playfully teased Shealy often while he chased down fly balls during a batting practice session on Tuesday. He took it in stride. "I've never been out there in a game, but so far it doesn't seem like that big of an adjustment at all," Shealy said.
Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said plans to give Shealy a look in right and left field, as well as some work at third base.
