'Fighting' Irish takes on boxing career

Tuesday, April 25 at 12:05 AM

Air Force's football team will be the underdog when it hosts Notre Dame on Nov. 11. During the game, the Falcons likely will have to contend with "Rocky" -- a.k.a. safety Tommy Zbikowski.

Zbikowski literally is putting the "fighting" in Notre Dame's Fighting Irish. The 21-year-old senior will make his professional boxing debut on June 10 at New York's Madison Square Garden, on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Paulie Malignaggi fight for the World Boxing Organization's junior welterweight championship.

Zbikowski has an amateur boxing record of 75-15. He once reached the finals of the Chicago Golden Gloves, but withdrew because of a death in his family. On Monday Zbikowski told talk-show host Jim Rome he would not have become a pro boxer if his eligibility as a college football player was in jeopardy. "I've got to be careful with promoting the fight and the endorsements," Zbikowski said.

If Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry wants to counter Zbikowski's pugilistic skills, he could recruit from the school's boxing team. Willie Lloyd (112 pounds), Ezekiel Ignaco (119) and Ian Tuznik (heavyweight) earned national titles for Air Force at the National Collegiate Boxing Championships held earlier this month in Reno, Nev.
