Keystone a milestone state again?

Friday, May 5 at 1:00 PM

The circus that surrounds San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds pitches its tent in Philadelphia this weekend.

Bonds, who starts the three-game series against the Phillies with 712 home runs, is on the verge of surpassing Babe Ruth (714) as the second-leading home run hitter in major-league history.

There is an odd twist to the road Bonds is traveling to surpass Ruth. The road runs through the state of Pennsylvania.

Ruth hit his 714th and final career home run in Pittsburgh. In fact, "The Bambino" hit his final three home runs in the same game playing for the Boston Braves, on May 25, 1935 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field. Ruth suffered a knee injury in Philadelphia less than a week later, and, after a feud with Braves ownership, never played again in the majors.

Bonds, who has been hobbled by a right knee injury, hit his first homer of the season on Apr. 22 against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. He began the 2006 season needing six homers to tie Ruth at 714. Ruth hit six home runs in '35 to finish his career at 714.
