Local broadcasters could call No. 715
Before the Major League Baseball season started, FSN Rocky Mountain announcer Drew Goodman gave thought to the possibility that he might call the 715th career home run hit by Barry Bonds -- and be part of all the controversy surrounding it.
The Colorado Rockies open a three-game series tonight in San Francisco against Bonds and the Giants.
"I guess you have to play it up," Goodman said. "I've always defended him from the standpoint that, I don't care how strong you are, you still have to be able to put the fat part of the bat on the baseball. He gets maybe one pitch a night to hit, and he's the best hitter I've ever seen because he always squares it up. I won't ever come off that."
"Now, would he have hit 700 or more home runs if allegedly he didn't (use steroids), I can't answer that. I'm going to play it straight and afterward, people can take and think of it as they will. It's certainly got some question marks around it."
KOA broadcasters Jeff Kingery and Jack Corrigan also are well-aware of their opportunity to call No. 715 hit by Bonds. "I don't think we're going to side-step it, and I don't think we're going to back away and hope it doesn't happen on our watch," Kingery said.
"The thing I would say is, you always want a good call. That's the main thing. If he hits it, I hope he hits it 400 miles so you know its gone the minute it leaves his bat."
