Rockies go for home run at box office

Thursday, May 4 at 12:05 AM

Winning games should make a needed impact in ticket sales for the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies, who lead the National League's West Division, opened a five-game homestand at Coors Field on Wednesday night. In its first 12 home games this season Colorado has drawn 310,674 fans -- an average of 25,889 fans per game.

Last year the Rockies averaged 23,930 fans at Coors Field, failing to draw at least two million fans (1,914,389) at home for the first time in franchise history. The Los Angeles Dodgers led the N.L. in home attendance at 44,489 fans per game (3,603,646 total) in 2005.

The Rockies' current homestand features two of the top teams in the N.L.'s Central Division -- the Cincinnati Reds and defending N.L.-champion Houston Astros.

NOTEWORTHY

Kudos to FSN Rocky Mountain anchor Tim Ring, who might have been the first local media personality to publicly present a scenario that would involve the Denver Broncos trading up in the NFL draft to select Vanderbilt University quarterback Jay Cutler. During the Jan. 25 broadcast of FSN's Football Playbook
show, Ring told the panel (which included former NFL players Howard Griffith, Tyrone Braxton and Jay Leeuwenburg) "Let me just throw something out there . . . Would you ever think about maybe packaging these picks, going up and picking a guy like Jay Cutler?" Griffith's reply -- "I don't think that's even an option."

Quote, unquote -- "Let me tell you something. During that second half, team's not winning, (Dallas Cowboys owner) Jerry Jones goes to the sideline, (Denver Broncos owner) Pat Bowlen goes to the sideline, (Washington Redskins owner) Dan Snyder goes to the sideline -- they're not doing anything but making a cameo. I have the ability as an owner to go the sideline and really do something. To break one out. To break a pass, return a punt, return a kickoff. I have that ability as an owner and they don't." -- former NFL player Deion Sanders, on the possibility of playing for the Austin Wranglers after joining the Arena Football League team's ownership group.

Pro Players Association is hosting a fundraiser on May 11 (7 p.m.) at Brannigan’s Irish House (310 Wilcox Street in Castle Rock) to benefit the American War Heroes organization. The list of celebrity bartenders includes former Broncos players Tyrone Braxton, Larry Brunson, Mark Cooper and Dave Studdard. Call 720-327-9207 for more information.

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl fielded questions on Wednesday from 950 The Fan's Sports Guys show co-hosts Marc Moser and Sandy Clough . When asked about comments made from one of the players about not being sure of their roles, Karl response was, "I'm not a big believer in roles. Your role is to play the best basketball game you've ever played in your life."

Karl is hoping to hear favorable results from blood tests taken on his son, Coby, who had a cancerous growth removed from his thyroid in March. Coby Karl, who completed his junior season for Boise State's basketball team, is one of 93 players listed by the NBA as early entrant candidates for next month's draft.
