Rockies hope to pile up division wins
Go West, young Rockies.
The Colorado Rockies are in Los Angeles tonight for the first of a nine-game road trip against three National League West Division rivals. The team that dominates within the division most likely will win the division this season.
Last year the Arizona Diamondbacks finished with the best record (41-32) within the N.L. West, followed by the San Diego Padres (39-34), who won the division title, and San Francisco Giants (38-35). The Rockies finished 32-41 last season against N.L. West teams after overcoming an 8-21 start.
In their past 62 games played against division opponents, the Rockies have gone 34-28 -- their .548 winning percentage the best among N.L. West teams since May 22, 2005.
This season the Rockies have a 10-8 record against the N.L. West, second to the Diamondbacks (14-10). The Dodgers have gone 9-10, followed by the Giants (9-11) and Padres (9-12).
NOTEWORTHY
I saw Rick Reilly fumbling his crutches repeatedly while hopping through Cherry Creek this weekend, after a national TV tour promoting his new book, Shanks for Nothing. On FSN's Best Damn Sports Show Period Reilly talked about playing a round of golf with former President Bill Clinton. "Does he cheat? He doesn't take mulligans, but he takes what we call 'Billigans.' So he hits his first shot, then he takes all these Billigans where he hits it again and again. So actually, yes, it is cheating."
Undefeated Marvin Cordova (9-0) defends his Global Boxing Union youth light-welterweight title in his hometown, Rocky Ford, on May 27. For ticket information call 702-349-5743 for ticket information. Cordova's sister, Chantel, is scheduled to fight on the same card.
Quote, unquote: "It's not a record, (Barry Bonds) tied with (Babe Ruth). Once he gets past (Hank Aaron's record of) 755, then that would be a reason to celebrate. I mean, no team gets credit for being second place, and that's no smash on Barry Bonds." -- Hall of Fame pitcher-turned-broadcaster Don Sutton.
