Softball heavyweights mash at altitude
There was a home-run derby at Coors Field on Sunday. The 'Long Haul Bombers' were on display -- large men swinging bats that seemed like aluminum toothpicks in their hands.
Larry Carter, Ray Cowart, B.J. Fulk and Jeff Hall
are members of the World Softball League. The foursome put on a display of power prior to the Colorado Rockies-Houston Astros game, bashing softballs into the wind and over the fences. It was a chance to show off their swings, as well as the latest in high-quality softball bats.
Each player was allowed 15 swings. Cowart and Carter represented DeMarini Sports. Both sent balls deep into the left-field stands. Hall and Fulk represented Worth Sports. Hall, like Cowart and Carter batted right-handed, bashing balls that nearly found the concourse.
Fulk bats left-handed, and he gave the early-arriving crowd something to gasp about when he drilled a ball off the facing below the third deck in right field.
