Why the Broncos will beat Raiders

You can't give a prediction around here without an explanation. So here are my reasons for why the Broncos will beat Oakland on Monday Night Football.

Grab your pen and paper. Take a lesson.

First, the Broncos' running game, with Selvin Young, Andre Hall and Michael Pittman. A strong running always has been the key ingredient to Mike Shanahan's formula for success. The strategy won't change on Monday.

Did you read what former Raiders defensive lineman (and new NFL Network commentator) Warren Sapp told me earlier in the week? You should have. After all, I do write with you in mind.

Here is a take from Sapp on Denver's running game: "Shanahan's going to get into that nasty little double tight end set that he likes, put it in motion, find out if you're in man-to-man defense or Cover 3 because those are the basic coverages that you get, and then he'll attack -- run the ball." Sapp also said, "I know the system Oakland plays . . . (the Raiders) are in trouble."

Now, last season Denver gained only 86 yards on 29 carries in a 34-20 loss at Oakland, so the Raiders' system can't be all bad. But in that game, the Broncos fell behind by double-digits (mainly because of turnovers) and had to pass the ball to play catch-up.

Mark this down: Barring last-minute personnel moves, the Raiders will be playing with only seven defensive linemen on the roster -- including three defensive tackles. Trust me, the Broncos' coaching staff has taken notice of those numbers, and will bang at the Raiders with the run often in hopes of wearing down those seven linemen. The list of seven linemen includes defensive end Kalimba Edwards, who been listed on Oakland's injury report all week.

I mentioned turnovers in the last meeting between the two teams. The Broncos committed four, which led to 24 of Oakland's 34 points. Denver had trouble securing the ball in road games throughout the '07 season -- 17 in eight games. When you average two turnovers a game, you're playing with fire and hoping not to lose.

Stronger run game. Even stronger run defense. Ball security. Improved quarterback play from Jay Cutler. Those are the Broncos' keys for success.

As for the Raiders, they're still referring to themselves as the "Team of the Decades." Decade -- or is it decayed? The House of Black and Silver just isn't in order.

JaMarcus Russell is big, strong and still is very green for a starting NFL quarterback. Troubled wide receiver Javon Walker wanted to give back his signing bonus monies and quit the game. Owner Al Davis doesn't like head coach Lane Kiffin, who might get Shanahan-ed (remember his firing after the Raiders' 1-3 start in 1989?) if Oakland starts the season poorly.

The Raiders' best passing plays of the night might come through rookie running back Darren McFadden. I know the Broncos' coaching staff is wary of McFadden throwing a pass or two like he did at the University of Arkansas. Denver hopes to get a big lead early, shut down the run and force the Raiders to pass the ball. Thing is, even if they're trailing big, the Raiders probably will keep running the ball because they lack confidence in Russell's passing abilities.

Judging from what's been talked about, reported and seen during training camp for both teams, the Broncos right now are better all-around. I'm sure Bronco Country would like a blowout win on Monday. For that matter, Raider Nation would like a blowout win.

Mark this down: the Broncos win 27-17 in a grind-em-up, workman-like performance to start the 2008 season.

By the way, here's a Open Mic tidbit for you: The Broncos will open the regular season on the road against an AFC West opponent for only the second time since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. On Sept. 9, 1990 Denver lost 14-9 against the Los Angeles Raiders at L.A. Coliseum.

I think we pull off the win Monday night! i don't see too many defenses that can stop what we have to offer. It will be a little difficult with out B-Marsh. Because he is Cutler security blanket. Anytime your missing that kind of talent of offensive. IT will be harder. But we should still be able to spread the defense out with two tight end sets!! I don't think the Raiders have that team chemistry yet! They do have personell on defense. But chemistry is everything

    Sam,
your kidding about the Broncos running game right. I can't believe anyone would be intimidated by a group of running backs led by Selvin Young. I am a diehard Broncos fan but lets be realistic about the running situation. All three of the Radiers running backs Fargas, McFadden and Bush are better than any back the Broncos roster. (Michael Pittman are you kidding me, he will be a zero fator) Also I don't think Nate Webster being the MLB will strike fear into anyone.
We will find out really quick how good the Broncos run defense is. I wouldn't be so quick to chalk up a W like the entire Denver media has against this Raider team. This is going to be a good game, a lot closer than people think.

I hate to say this, really I do, but I don't see this one being close. I have no confidence in our team right now. I don't think JayCut is the answer, I think the running backas are weak (though shanahan has gotten it done with weak RBs in the past) and most importantly for this game, our front 7 is not up to par. They will get sliced and diced, especially if we try to blitz just in case Russell is throwing (which we will) I just see us falling into a catch-22 type of situation. Fargas will have 100+ McFadden 60-80 and Russell will do enough with that TE he's got to beat us. I also have a premonition of that jerk Lelie catching a TD. Sorry fellow Bronc boys, but I think this is gonna be a long year. But hey at least we get KC twice!

It is not that I don't believe in the front 7, I just don't know. I won't be sure till I see some pressure up the middle and see us stop the run up the gut. I would like to see us sign a big physical DT in Foxy's roster spot. If we could just collapse the pocket, Elvis would run wild.

To me this is the key to our season, I think we are really strong everywhere else.

This should be a close game as both teams are hurting in key areas and want to win time of possession. Here's some basic analysis from a Raider fan. Hope you don't mind it taking up space here!

Raider upgrades have occurred on both sides of the ball but the team is still rebuilding. Russell's had two starts but will still make rookie mistakes. Harris at LT is a slight upgrade from Sims. Gallery is settling in at LG (not a bust at this position) and Grove at C is back to full strength after surgery. Carlisle should do his usual good work and Green is still backup material at RT.

TE Miller is one of the best and usually finds ways to get open while the WRs are still a work in progress - not expecting much from them, it just depends on how cool Russell remains in the situation and whether he picks up the blitzes well. He still throws a speed ball which is a problem for the WRs.

The RBs are much improved and it will be interesting to see how Kiffin uses them. Fargas and Bush could be used first to wear down the D, followed by a lot of McFadden in the late second half. There may be some unusual plays but I think Kiffin won't overextend McFadden just yet (e.g., as a WR).

On the D, there has been addition by subtraction: Sapp out (had a poor performance at times last year despite his great overall record) and Kelly moves to DT where he should be much better. The other DT position is a real weakness and will probably be a major point of attack. Burgess should do his usual great work while Richardson will attack the LT. Should be an interesting matchup on that side.

Morrison and Howard need to step up against the run to complement their great passing coverage. The other LB Brown is the unknown but he is fast. The DBs are much better, with Wilson being a much better run stopper than Huff and Huff being a much better FS than Schweigert. Asomugha is one of the best and will get tested more if our run D steps up. Hall is by far a better CB than Washington and was a steal with our second round pick. Whether he holds up physically is another matter.

Should be a great game. Hopefully the Raiders win but it could go either way. Best of luck (you're gonna need it!) :-)

I would like more than anything to change my tune about S. Young. I just don't see it happening. I happen to think Andre Hall is our best back until Torain is healthy. This system that Sam always touts as being so great always works between the 20's but what happens when we get into the redzone, we settle for field goals. Can Selvin Young be counted on to pound the ball in on third down in the redzone? Well he has this year to prove it otherwise we will be playing musical runningbacks again.

Truth be told Denver has done Nada since the days of John Elway. Last year in Oakland the Raiders ran the ball down Denver's throat and man handled the Broncos winning the game. In Denver the Raiders out played the Broncos and were a called time out away from sweeping Denver. Every other year Shanny is dumping the D coach and changing schemes, nothing has worked to date.

The Raiders will run the ball down Denver's throat again this year and set up play action. The Raider D will shut down the run and pressure Cutler into throwing into the mouth of the lion.
The Raiders D scheme has been tweaked this year and they will blitz much more then they have in the past.

Monday Night Denver will get a taste of this very talented and young Raiders team that will get nothing but better with time. They will also see just how far behind the Raiders they really are and get a taste of what they can expect for years to come.

Denver will stay where they have been since the Elway retirement which is a below average team that talks a much better game then they can play.

Being the typical media guy I am, I spoke with a member of the Broncos coaching staff about it) ... Raider practices are closed. Well, I didn't need to see a Raider practice this summer. Oh and Wrecker, you say you live in the past... the ancient one, so its no wonder why you don't know how the 2008 team has improved from 2007. Let me refresh you though...

    The broncos main problems were:
    1) Stopping the run
    2) Red zone stalling
    3) Rushing the passer

How did they fix these problems?
    1) Bringing in a dominant Dwayne Robertson. D-Rob has played well in a 4-3 system with the Jets even though he is a 3-4 fit (which he now is in). Marcus Thomas is finally coming into his own and will hopefully become an extremely dominant player this year. DJ Williams is back on the weakside doing his thing. Nate Webster is a natural middle linebacker, he may not be the best but I believe he can manage. Now that the d-line can create pressure the secondary can play closer coverage.

    2) Jay Cutler knows he has diabetes. Brandon Marshall is becoming a great WR (and hopefully a better person). Eddie Royal will be a great rookie threat (being at VTech with TERRIBLE QBs he never had a great chance to prove himself as a WR). Selvin Young beefed up and Andre Hall is a great change of pass back. The O-line has a great hope in Ryan Clady who has the potential to be a Joe Thomas. Ryan Harris has Daniel "Training Wheels" Graham beside him. Tony Scheffler is amazing and Nate Jackson is starting to step up. Brandon Stokley is still the slot machine.

    3) To be honest, I don't believe the Broncos have improved upon this short comming enough. Dumervil can provide the rush on obvious passing downs but they still lack a every down DE. In my opinion I belive that if anything (aside from injuries) ails the broncos this year, this will be it. Jarvis Moss has this season to prove to the Bronco nation that his 17th overall pick wasn't wasted instead of getting Staley at RT.

If Selvin didn't share with Travis, last year, then he would have ran for well over 1400 yards. He had to split the time and still got over 700. If you think Hall can't run, then you need to put down your beer and pot pipe for a moment and regroup your thoughts. Also, as Wrecker said, we don't have the same D-line. We have one of the best in Robertson and look out for Boss. He will make his presence known, tonight. He is healthy and ready. Don't think your Raiders are going to move from last place to division winners. Not happening. Tonight, Denver will show you why.

Raider Ray, your post was asinine. If you don't bother to read an article before you post, then you are merely ranting. Oh, wait, almost forgot, you're a Raiders fan. That explains everything.

I love the fader comments. Typical. The "bronco" fans that think they suck or havent done anything since Elwya retired are lame and boring, like another poster has stated dont let facts get ino the way. I am tired of the negativity around here. If you dont like them fine, but for once back up your statements with something that may be new to you, ummmm facts.

    I agree with BD.

remember this: the fader nation is a conquered nation

Did I call that game or what??? I told you they had NO answer for cutler or anyone else who ran a rout last night. I clearly stated that if Denver did not turn the ball ova' that game was going to QUICKLY get out of hand! Nothing more to say. Back to the drawing board for a game against a REAL TEAM. Much tougher test but lucky enough to be at home. Intensity contain and TCKLING ON DEFENSE AND ONCE AGAIN NO TURN OVERS IS the name of the game this sunday my friends! Go Broncos! Go JETS! - Brooklyn

I'm writing this the day after the game. How could I ever have doubted you, Sam? :)

Just one thing: Was FAST EDDIE stuck somewhere back in a corner of your crystal ball?

Raider Ray, I guess you're feeling pretty stupid, now? Maybe that's why you aren't writing in? How about those RB's? You remember them, don't you? The ones who scored 3 touchdowns? I said your comment was asinine because you didn't bother to finish reading Sam's article. Instead, you chose to rip off a rant with no knowledge of the article. Ignorance is bliss. So, don't go away mad, just go away.

AZDynamics - Fast Eddie Royal wasn't on the radar in my pre-game prediction ... Can't get 'em all right!!! ... ;) ... The happiest guy in Broncos camp (outside of Mike Shanahan and Jay Cutler) is Tony Scheffler ... If Royal and Brandon Marshall handle their business, the tight end is going to get some great opportunities in this offense
