Collier likes Broncos 3-4 approach
If anyone in Denver knows the inner workings of football's 3-4 defense, it's former Broncos defensive coordinator
Collier, who is considered one of pro football's all-time masters of the 3-4 defense, has taken notice of the Broncos' use of the alignment in the past few games. He believes Denver's intermittent use of the 3-4 presents problems for opposing coaches in game preparation.
"The biggest key is you have to have unselfish lineman," Collier said. "Those guys have to play disciplined football -- by that, I mean that have to protect the linebackers, so to speak.
"The glory is not going to come for defensive linemen in a 3-4 very often."
This week Broncos coach
Fletcher and Moss are similar in build -- tall and lean. The Broncos can only hope Moss blossoms into a pass-rusher with the skills of Fletcher, who holds the franchise record of sacks -- in a game (four, tied with four others), a season (16) and career (97.5).
"I said man, if this kid can do anything at all in space, as far as backpedaling, turning and twisting and doing all the things a linebacker has to do in pass coverage . . . if he could do that, he could be a viable force as a linebacker," Collier said.
"We did the same thing with
"Quite often he's going to end up pass-rushing against a tight end or a running back instead of those big linemen. A guy like Simon was able to get a lot of mismatches, I feel, in pass-rushing situations when he was a blitzing linebacker.
"That was to our advantage and it turned out good." . . .
Have you noticed?: The Broncos' offense generated 10 touchdowns in their first two games. Then Shanahan told the media that quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is calling the plays. Since that disclosure the Broncos' offense has produced five TDs in the past 12 quarters . . .
The Clippers dropped long-time general manager Elgin Baylor. Who's going to represent them at the NBA draft lotto podium now? . . .
Shameless plug: Watch this video (Click here) on Broncos great Floyd Little. It's worth your time to hear Little and Jim Brown talk some football . . .
I'm throwing a name into the hat for the Rockies' vacant bench coaching position - Mike Hargrove. He's got big-league managerial experience, and he's worked with Dan O'Dowd when both were in the Cleveland Indians organization . . .
And maybe Donald Trump could buy the Rockies . . .
The Colorado Avalanche open the regular season Thursday at Pepsi Center against the Boston Bruins. There hasn't been a peep about the Avs since Joe Sakic announced his return. A Denver playoff team flying under the radar . . .
The Nuggets will start the regular season pretty soon. Chris Andersen is back. Juwan Howard is back. Wait, is that Marcus Liberty I see with a gym bag? . . .
Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant tops the list of most popular NBA jerseys in Europe. In order, Kevin Garnett (Boston), Pau Gasol (L.A. Lakers), LeBron James (Cleveland) and Tony Parker (San Antonio) round out the top five. The Nuggets' Allen Iverson ranks No. 6, while Carmelo Anthony does not appear in the top 10 . . .
Remember, the Broncos' wives annual food drive is Sunday. Donations of canned items and/or cash will be accepted at entrances to Invesco Field at Mile High.

I remember the topic of running a 3-4 being discussed last season. Before the deal was made for Boss Bailey, I liked the idea of Dumerville and Moss coming off the corners with Nate and DJ in the middle. At the time, the problem was not having the linemen who could make it work. Robertson was reported to have said he was more comfortable coming to Denver because they ran a 4-3. I'm curious how he feels about the latest defensive schemes.
I haven't been able to watch closely enough to see how the nose tackle has fared, or even who has manned the position. I continue to hear Ekuban's name on plays along with Elvis, although I don't even know if Dumerville is on the field with the 3-4. I'll have to pay closer attention. TV cameras move away too quickly to get an accurate picture of lineplay in most cases.
I still like the idea of Dumerville and Moss coming off the corners, but both coming from the same side could be hard to defend.
When Moss was drafted, I was more in favor of a big tackle. Amobe Okoye seemed to have the right makeup to be a nose tackle. I'm not a big numbers guy, but Jarvis being outdone on the bench press by Brady Quinn kind of bothered me. He didn't seem big or strong enough to be an effective DE in the NFL. Moss' speed can be used more effectively from the outside in a 3-4 where his lack of beef won't be an issue.
I like the move to a 3-4 because they now seem to have the linebackers to pull it off. The verdict is still out on the line. Next year's draft has the potential to make this team a monster. Defensive ends that can play tackle, and tackles tough enough to man the middle could make a difference.

Jayrockstone,
the 3-4 is a nice theory in that you thing Moss and Dumverville will be rushing off the corner, but if you watch the broncos 3-4 scheme none of the line backers rush in they all play pass coverage while only 3 d-lineman rush. The 3-4 the way denver executes it is crap, just ask Drew Brees who was sipping koolaid against denver's 3-4 before he attempted a pass. Dummerville is irrelevant in a 3-4 because he is too little to play the D-line position and he can only rush from the outside, he can't actually cover anyone in pass coverage.
Another thing, its nice that you like Okoye but he was picked 10th, we never had the opportunity to get him.

I have been waiting for broncos to do that for a while. they have the speed at line backer to do this and moss would just add that extra aspect of a good pass rusher on the field.dumerviel cant do it all on pass d, we need some sacks to take pressure off the d-backs. he has the speed.

It is almost impossible to have an 8-8 winner in a 5 or 6 team division, unless all the teams are bunched. The rare possibility is an 8-8 wild card winning a tie-breaker to get in. More often, it will be as you have computed for this yearbumps up the minimum to 10-6 in most years.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie. I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I'd post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem fixed soon. Cheers
