Who's in Denver's Sports Ring of Shame?
For the record, Denver's Sports Ring of Shame is the result of some guys in our office tossing ideas around during a routine morning brainstorming session.
Then it was tossed to me. I'm off and running.
A Sports Ring of Shame for Denver. Citing people for moments in Denver sports worthy of, well, shame. Humbling arrests. Boneheaded in-game moments. Draft busts. Coaching errors. Embarrassing lapses of judgment, on and off the field of play.
Sounded tasty. And in these times, you accept when someone offers a column idea. Pass, and you could be watching from the sidelines. Indefinitely.
Thing is, you don't make many friends with this type of list. In fact, you probably lose a few. And it's definitely not the gig you call media relations expecting to find help.
"
No, this list is on us. Yes, you and I are going to compile a list of candidates. Move over Mount Crushmore. To quote

It's a simple task, Denver. Think of someone from our local sports scene, past or present, pros, colleges and preps too, worthy of a big "S" for shame. Leave a few suggestions here on the blog.
Don't be ashamed to, ahem, speak up!

I would like to put Ashley Lelie in the ring of shame. This gent demands a trade rather than compete for a starting job, then bounces around the league for two years. I recall that as he caught a couple of clutch passes this last weekend (for the first time in that two year span), he ran around the field with his hand held to his ear embracing the boo's that rained down from the stands. I can't believe he would diss the fans that used to cheer for him.

My nominee is the Cherry Creek High School Bruins football team from the early 1990s that "beat" Arapahoe High for the state title.
The game was held at Stutler Bowl, the Bruins home field.
I put the word beat in quotation marks because the Bruins neglected to inform Arapahoe that they had failed to clear the playing field of snow. Arapahoe of course assumed that the playing surface would be cleared (this is, after all customary), so they didn't bring cleats that would be appropriate for a snow- packed field.
The Bruins went on to "win" the game and earn a place in Colorado sports infamy (and shame) forever.

I've got a couple new ones. First, Gary Hoaglund nailed it when he brought up Ted Gregory (twice). What a waste. His only career sack came against the Broncos when he was with the Aints. It may have been pre-season, though.
2nd: Who was responsible for the blue uniforms in Boulder? That was god-awful. My dad still complains about that. I barely remember.
3rd: This takes the Matt Holliday trade fiasco a step further...The Brothers Monfort. What a travesty they have been. We wait decades for a MLB team, & the one we get is run by a couple of unemployed meat packers who can't stop telling us how poor they are (6th highest revenue in MLB). To do that to an adult would be low-class; to do it to a small boy is heartless.
Second nomination would have to be Bill Romanowski, for actions on and off the field. This man should be permanently relegated to a sewer somewhere because he's a piece of crap.

Gofastgo, Happy Thanksgiving. While I agree that Vick is human garbage, I still feel that "not seeing the outcome of your actions" makes it any less severe. Vick killed animals. Henry killed people with his poison. I saw firsthand, teaching martial arts to troubled youths and teens involved in gangs, drugs, etc., as to what harm it can do. Crack, meth, all the goodies that dealers push, they eventially find their way to the kids. I've attended a few funerals out here due to kids falling back into bad habits and overdosing, getting shot. I think what Vick did to animals was inhumane, but what Henry did to people, as a dealer, is a crime against humanity.

Marlin Briscoe shoplifted from the May D&F, not the Denver Dry Goods, and a more sorry end to the first black NFL quarterback could not have arisen.
Craig Morton was a scumbag; too bad Buck Scott and the staff of the Colorado Mining Company, can't be here to testify. And the whole "reborn Christian" thing was just a sham. No wonder they hated him in Dallas AND New York.
The Colorado Buffalos in the early 70's were thugs, criminals.
Mecklenberg tearing up an autograph hardly gets him in this conversation. If he'd played in New York, they'd love him like Harry Carson.

This Ring of Shame is shaping up to be something out of Dante's Inferno - there are so many different levels of sin; I don't think I'm comfortable putting Rod Smith and Karl Mecklenburg on the same level as Rae Carruth.
Obviously, Carruth is scum; he coldly murdered his pregnant girlfriend as a matter of convenience.
Mecklenburg acted like a jerk (tearing up an autograph), especially considering that their was a kid involved; but it was one bad moment, in the heat of the strike, for which he later apologized.
Rod Smith did a terrible thing, but he took responsibility for his actions, and used the experience to make positive changes in his behavior and to encourage others to do the same.
With both of these people (Smith and Meck) the good far out-weighed the bad, on and off the field, and I don't believe either of them belongs in a ring of shame.
It should be filled with the names of people about whom it can be said "the bad far out-weighed the good".
This is my submission:
Defensive Tackle Darryl Gardener, who first made news in Denver after being arrested after a fight outside a pancake house before the 2003 season (his first and only with the Broncos), and was later suspended twice for publicly criticizing the team.
The one place that Gardener didn't make news was on the field; He missed training camp and the team's first five games because of wrist surgery stemming from the fight at the pancake house. He started two games after returning from the injury, but was replaced due to lack of effectiveness.
Shanahan then suspended Gardener twice - after he complained about the defensive coaches/scheme, and after he criticized Shanahan on a radio show. He once claimed that Mike Shanahan had called him "the best defensive tackle I've ever seen".
The Bronco's withheld two million dollars of Gardener's signing bonus and tried to recover the three million that had already been paid. The parties later reached a settlement, the terms of which were not released.

When writing fiction your yellow hat can create those greater than life characters that happen to be the centre of the good novels, just by pushing them beyond all accepted limits.
