Bowlen a big spender in free agency?
I can't wait to see what Pat Bowlen does with your money and his football team in free agency.
The Broncos have told their own free agents -- players like Ebenezer Ekuban, Marlon McCree, Nate Webster and MIchael Pittman -- to test the market, which opens this weekend.
I doubt any one of those four players will start for an NFL team in 2009. Tells you where the Broncos are -- in need of plenty help when it comes to restocking and improving the roster.
So how much does Bowlen have to spend? I'm not talking Monopoly cap money -- where you sign a guy to a 7-year, $35 million dollar deal this season, but only $1 million is base for the first year and $14 million is signing bonus prorated over the life of the contract -- thus the deal only counts for $3 million against the cap in 2009.
I'm talking about the real money -- the $14 million signing bonus in the above equation. Does Bowlen have the money to lure a Pro Bowl-caliber free agent (or trade for one). Or are we looking at more McCree-like signings -- again, nice guy but not going to make the All-Pro list at safety.
They say money can't buy love. Do the Broncos have enough of it to buy the heart of a championship defense this off-season?
