U.S. Open Cup: Galaxy ends Cinderella's run

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Quavas Kirk and Alan Gordon scored to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-0 victory over amateur squad Roma FC Tuesday in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup soccer tournament.

The Galaxy, the tournament’s defending champion, will face the Colorado Rapids or Real Salt Lake in the quarterfinals Aug. 23.

Roma FC, an amateur team from Dallas, defeated two professional teams in the previous two rounds before facing the Galaxy.

Kirk gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, when he curled a 24-yard shot inside the left post.

Gordon scored in the 69th minute after Roma FC goalkeeper Nestor Merlo tripped while fielding a pass from a defender. Gordon pounced on the loose ball and converted inside the left post.

Merlo, a 46-year old who played professionally in Argentina, finished with seven saves. Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made three saves for the shutout.

The Galaxy played without forward Landon Donovan, who strained his left hamstring while warming up July 26 for a friendly match against Mexico City’s Cruz Azul.

Also on Tuesday, Jamil Walker's goal early into extra time continued D.C. United's dominance over the Columbus Crew this year, giving them a 2-1 victory in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup at the Maryland Soccerplex.
