Former Rapids striker Chris Carrieri retires

Former Rapids striker Chris Carrieri retired from professional soccer on Monday in Cary, N.C., as a member of the Carolina RailHawks.

According to OurSportsCentral, Carrieri told teammates he would pursue a career in information technology.

From 2001 to 2003, Carrieri played 68 games for the Rapids, recording 19 goals and 17 assists. In 2002, he tied for the team lead with 11 goals, and five of the goals were game winners, the highest total on the squad.

On July 4, 2002, in Denver, Carrieri registered a hat trick in front of more than 61,000 fans in a 3-2 victory over Chicago, notching goals at 57, 82 and 87 minutes of the second half. His display whipped the crowd into a frenzy that hadn't been seen, ironically, since July 4 of the previous year, when he assisted on one of John Spencer's three goals against D.C.

Although he sometimes ran afoul of the referee because of his temper, Carrieri was a fast, hard-working forward and a patient and friendly representative of the team. The diminutive duo of Carrieri and Spencer was a 1-2 attack that, when healthy and consistent, is unmatched in the history of the team.

HERCULEZ SCORES IN LOSS TO BERMUDA: On Friday, the Bermuda national team defeated the Rapids 2-1 in an exhibition despite a late goal by Colorado's Herculez Gomez.

Bermuda's Kwame Steede opened the scoring in the 51st minute, heading in a cross from Keishan Bean. Domico Coddington doubled the Bermuda lead in the 55th minute.

Herculez, who replaced Christian Gomez shortly after Bermuda took the 2-0 lead, put the Rapids on the board in the 72nd minute; Jacob Peterson was credited with the assist.
