A short repsonse from the Rapids' Plush
I got a short response from Jeff Plush, the Rapids' managing director, about the team's coaching situation. ...
"I would simply say that Rochester jumped the gun and their release is not accurate. I believe we are closing in on an announcement very soon," Plush wrote in an e-mail to FC Rocky.
So Rochester jumped the gun in announcing former Rochester Rhinos assistant coach Steve Guppy as an assistant coach for Colorado. Maybe the release isn't accurate because Guppy simply hasn't signed some paperwork, making him officially "hired."
The Rapids are pretty secretive about this stuff.
But the signs are pointing to Gary Smith being hired full time as head coach of the Rapids.
I think that's a good thing.

And what of Guppy himself announcing this on a radio show? Who is right, who is wrong and who is simply covering up the facts?

"covering up the facts" is a little too strong a phrase, i think. my guess is that everybody's right. guppy and smith have agreed to be assistant and coach, but they haven't put their signatures on paper yet, which is probably something they'll do tuesday morning or monday night. just a guess. that way, when the rapids say they haven't signed anybody, they're correct. the only issue i see here is, from the rapids organization's perspective, there's been a real lack of discretion among some of those involved. here it is monday, the day before the announcement, and the rhinos have discussed the issue publicly and one of the coaches involved has discussed the issue publicly. at least the rapids, who are typically tight-lipped about such things, have moved quickly on this.
