Morals can be had without God

Regarding "Pace finds guidance in God's moral law "Rocky Mnt News, pg 44, 3-22-07, its that same old crap again! Not God and religion but the references to God and moral issues. I don't believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi advocated that we abandon moral judgement when she said that "we don't need moral judgement from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs." It does not mean to abandon all moral judgement! The writer from Centennial has twisted the meaning of Pelosi's call. Why can't God and religion be looked at outside the realm of the United States Constitution. The First Amendment says Congress shall not recognize any one religion over others. There is a basic reason for this!

I thank our founding fathers for the First Amendment, these people with Neo-Christian backgrounds and values knew that in order to create a living new nation the people must be allowed religious freedom to worship in their own way.

Religious freedom and taxation without representation were the primary reasons for the creation of our country and the risks taken in the first place. Our monetary system, coinage and paper currency should say in the "USA We Trust." and not in "God We Trust". Our money is backed by the USA with goods and services! Our Pledge of Allegience had more meaning prior to the 'Under God" being added. The words "The People" would have had more logic, meaning and understanding. Yes, lets believe and trust in God but lets believe in ourselves and in the USA under the Constitution.

I thank our founding fathers, especially for the First Amendment. They were able to understand and comprehend, when adding the Bill Of Rights, something we just can't seem to comprehend or accept in the 20th and 21st century. The Bill of Rights was critical not only for the passage of the Constitution but also to protect individual rights against the government. Even now, regardless of the First Amendment all non-Christians gladly respect and participate in the celebrating of Christmas with Christians.

Now again, when the Christmas season nears, we will have the heated controversy of "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". There are many Christians that cannot unerstand why people will not say Merry Christmas to expresss the season and yet will not question why we even have a Christmas.

Morals can be had without God.

I'm a left-wing liberal and a Christian. I hate to break it to you judgemental, arrogant Republicans, but you don't have a monopoly on God.

Christian, Jew, Muslim, Aetheist, Agnositc -- whatever your beliefs, you can be a lowlife or a moral, upstanding citizen. It's all about individual choices.

Religion is the cause of and solution to -- all of man's problems.

Let 'em have at it. "Religion" is mans mindset about his faith. I can see it now--the MTV crowd still polluting our childrens minds, ethics and morality go down the toilet, (like it hasn't now), abortion of our future children is an acceptable practice, (like it isn't now) freedom of speech and religion as established in our constitution is all but a memory, and a new form of "religion" will infest our lives forcing their brand of "law" on us, and they're "getting er done" as we speak, and it ain't christians. Just remember--you were too busy knocking down the American way of life to see the big picture. Also, will the last real American remember to bring the American flag with them so we could put it in a museum? Then we could have our children read American History books for what it would be -- History.

It is unfortunate that we get hung up on religion. Our forefathers had no idea how we would evolve as a nation and those who try to believe they were omniscient are really over reaching. The concern of those who wrote the Constitution was that there not be a State Religion that would eclipse the religious beliefs or practices of other religions. The Constitution does not guarantee freedom from religion.
Those in our society who have no religious convictions are free to do so -- but they must also be tolerant and not impose their beliefs on society. The zealousness that those who have no religious conviction in demanding that their belief that there should be no religious signs, symbols, holidays or what have you, is as repulsive as someone demanding that we all follow one religious venue.

The US is considered one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world christianity is only one of more than a 100 religions practiced in the US. The first amendment denys the Federal govt any power to establish a national religion. Morality comes not from religion, but from civility and respect for all people.

I can tell you what morality exists without God, but I know you will blow off what I say. Humans are social animals and anything that makes it possible for people to live together in safety is moral. stealing, killing, giving false testament in court all diminish our social fabric. Any sexual behavior that victimizes someone is immoral and this includes marital rape. Using this method you can see that any human activity can be discussed without religion. Some issues, say cloning, may take years to figure out because nothing in any holy book covers it. Add test tube babies, blood transfusions, women wearing make-up, men shaving their beards etc. People have died or been killed over these issues when religion was used instead of discussion. The concept of individual rights is constitutional, not religious. According to the ten commandments, it would not be legal to miss church, to dis-honor your parents or to covet your neighbors car. But you could beat your wife, rape a woman bought as a slave, or give your children to strangers, and be perfectly legal. Religion gives quick, shallow answers to complicated social questions.

Michael, it is rooted in humanity and in tradition.
Atheists are no less moral than Christians of whatever stripe you choose.

"I thank our founding fathers for the First Amendment"
Really? How do you do this? You know, these "founding fathers" are dead, right? So, what, you burn some incense and bow your head and thank their spirits? Curious custom, but hey, it's a free country...

What morality exists without God? Especially without a Christian God? Every society and culture has their own morals and moral standards. Which one is right? Which one should we follow?
The USA was founded on Christian morality and Judeo-Christian beliefs and attitudes. I think that has aided in the incredible success and greatness of the USA. I can just hear the left wing atheists screaming about that now.
If our morality is not rooted in the belief of a Creator who gave us rules to follow, then what does it matter? If there is no all knowing and loving Creator that made us and the world in which we live, what is the point??? If there is no one to be accountable to after we die, then who will be accountable? No one.
